  1. GDay All,

Just wanting to catch up on the latest fishing rod lingo. There is a lot of talk of 'fast action and slow action' rods and also 'soft and hard action' rods.

What does all this mean in real terms and what do you use the different types for ?

    Thanks once again :D

  2. Yeah I get the drift JD, cans of worms arent pleasant. :1onono:

I think it is great what the Fishcare Volunters are doing and hope they can educate some people. :D

If anyones interested have a look at this :

    Interesting Study

Its a government site I foung a couple of weeks ago which might shed some light, its could also be what prompted the Fishcare directive. Worth having a look. :D

    Cheers

  3. This has been an interesting thread to read. I dont think anyone is being discriminitory at all. There is simply facts being stated.

If a said black men are faster runners than white guys over a hundred meters this is not racist or discriminitory, its a fact.

The facts are that there is a percentage of foreign visitors and foriegn born locals dont understand our regulations because they havent been educated. This applies to many other things as well. The local aussie fisho probably knows the rules but breaks em anyway and they need to be dealt with by fisheries.

I believe everyone should be treated fairly and according to their own situation. These people should not be protected from action and comment if they are doing the wrong thing, regardless of where they are from. Educate them if they dont know, and fine the ones that do.

I get frustrated sometimes when people who are clearly doing the wrong thing have some kind of immunity to comment or action just because they dont come from here. Its almost biased against aussies. You cant say or do anything for fear of being labeled a racist. But if a local does something wrong you can nail them to the wall and set them on fire :bash: and its all ok.

  4. I think if you've got a reasonably new motor you should stick to the manufactures oil. If anything goes wrong with the motor and you need warranty assistance I think it would help the case.

They all probably come from the same place anyway. BP, Castrol ,Mobil etc, probably make the oil for Quicksilver , Evinrude. I cant see Evinrude etc in the oil game, I think there just branded that way. I dont know that for sure, but these marine companies make outboards not oil. I dont think there is any difference in quality in my experience, not that youd notice anyway. I use Mobil mostly.

    Cheers :1prop:

  5. Good point mark, to me its simple, but thats my game. If your not confident, thats ok its not everyones bag, then dont attempt it. Take it to a mechanic cause it should be a cheap exercise.

I would advise learning to do it however in case you get stuck somewhere and need to do some "bush mechanics".

I think all boaties should learn some basic procedures in regards to boat and trailer maintanence. Could get you out of trouble one day. Cant call the NRMA to fix your boat or trailer . :1prop:

Oh yeah, the old addage of dont touch what aint broke is a risky ploy. Trailer bearing failure seldom gives any warning.

    Cheers Mate :biggrinthumb:

  6. Yeah Ken,

Mate maybe im overreacting but if the boat is only rated up to 10hp and you put a 15hp on it im a little concerned about liability.

If you had an accident (touch wood) and bad things were to happen the first thing investigators look at is compatibility of boat to motor, and if your is overpowered that will have some implications. As I said maybe an overreaction but ive seen innocent situations turn bad on sillier things.

Bashir is right as well you dont have to use all the power. I just believe in having the right motor for the boat, and if a 15 were better than a 10 the manufacturer would have rated it that way. Usually the top rating is more than enough so having a motor 3 times more powerfull than your last is worth thinking about before you go ahead. :insane:

Maybe the dealer will let you try out a 9.9 before you buy it ? That would put your mind at ease.

    Cheers :1prop:

  7. Hey Narra,

The 9.9 and 15 Johno's are identical. Same block, pistons etc. The motors are even the same weight. I believe the difference is the carby only.Smaller jets in the 9.9 and a restrictive base plate. So you'll go through more fuel if thats an issue.

  8. Thanks Joe,

I think im starting to see what you mean about SP's once you start buying em you cant stop. I cant go into Big W without walkin out with a bag or two ! :-rolleyes

Ill check out the Sahara. As for the rod im determined to build one. Checking out the Rod Builders Club tonight to get some ideas.

    Cheers

  9. Oh sorry mate forgot to mention if you use your boat regularly throughout the year and they dont hit the water, you can get longer out of your bearings. Repack every 2 yrs and replace every 3 or 4,

    Cheers :)

  10. Hey Mark,

Your bearings will definatley last longer if they never hit the water, although just as big an enemy of trailer bearings is lack of use.

If your trailer sits there few a few months unused that needs to be taken into consideration too. This creats pits in the cones.

Replace em every 2 years regardless i reckon and repack once a year as a general rule of thumb.

Heres how you pack bearings - No tools required. :)

Inspect rollers and cones for discoloration and pitting, if ok

Wash out bearing if needed or unsure what grease is in it (dont mix greases)

Packing tapered rolers is a piece of cake. Big dolop of grease in the palm of your hand and press and wipe thelarge end of the tapered roler into the grease and continue this until the grease comes out the small end. Job done. 1 minute per side. Use marine wheel bearing grease, ie Castrol Boating Grease which is a lithium based grease or equivelant.

Replace the hub seals and wipe some grease on the bearing side, fit hub, tighten nut LIGHTLY - just over finger tight so theres no play and fit new split pin.

There you go - some more technical info from my mental vault of useless tidbits :D

  11. Gday fellas,

Looking to upgrade my crappy combos and get something a bit decent. Thought id start looking at reels.

Basic Bream setup im after but dont have much of a budget and im only a social fisho. I noticed the Shimano Sedona 2500 goes for abour $95 - $100.00.

What do you guys think of this reel as far as value for money and performance. Im after something half decent and reliable, will this do the job?

    Any comments appreciated.

    Cheers :)
