  1. Yeh, 5/0 or 6/0 circle is more the business... I tend to pin it through the shoulder of the bait if I'm not trolling. This allows the line and hook to slide into the Kingies mouth, then be in the correct position to set in the jaw as it sides back out. Or through the nose as Kingy said (either way, but NOT in the back half of the bait). And DON'T strike with circles! Better luck next time!!
  2. Spot on! On a roll dude! Leave some for the rest of us!
  3. Well done Dave! Started your jewie score with a hat-trick!! Bet your mates are wishing they hadn't stayed in bed!
  4. Thanks guys, all good info.
  5. Cheers guys, Advice taken. I'll keep trying! Any other spots to try that may work better? Is there a "season" for them here? Most of the articles I've read are about N.T./Qld. Thanks.
  6. G'day 'Raiders, I've been making my first attempts at catching some Mud Crabs the last couple of trips out and have had no luck as yet. Up around Roseville in Middle Harbour is supposed to be a good area, so I've tried about 5 spots around the bridges and downriver slightly past the ramp. Using standard style folding "box" type crab net, using fresh large mullet frames and heads as bait, even tried a bit of tuna oil on them today. I've tried run in and run out tides as well. Early high tide this morning (5am start, and tried through to 11am) with warm water temp (18 - 19C), tried different depths (between 2m and 5m), any hints as to what I'm doing wrong? I've had baits chewed by crabs when fishing land based at Echo Pt, so I thought this would be easy!! I regularly fish MH, Sydney H, Botany B and the Hacking, so if I'm trying in wrong place let me know!! Any tips guys?!
  7. Nothing wrong with that mate! If you're not sure of the motor service history it might be an idea to have her serviced and get the impeller changed. Then you'll be good for a years worth of fishing. Tight lines, motohead.
  8. Butch the Snapper King!! Unlucky not to get the first one (why do the big fish always hit the weakest rod?!?). Got your own back with some perfect eating size fish... The early bird catches the snapper!! Well done dude.
  9. Excellent work on fly gear!! Gotta try that someday... All hail the King(y)!!!
  10. Nicely done on such light gear mate! Looks like the season is upon us... Worth the early start, hey!
  11. Well done! I've caught a few now around the same size, still trying for a BIG one though! But I still remember how it felt to break the duck... Onwards and upwards!!!
  12. General newbie boatie advice (and don't laugh, everyone screws up): Practice reversing your trailer in a vacent carpark (not at the ramp). Make sure you have all the required safety gear before you go out (get a copy of the rules from Maritime or online). Double check the drain bungs are in before getting near the water. Make sure the vent in the fuel cap is open before starting the engine. Prime the fuel line (squeeze the bulb until it's firm) before starting. Double check the drain bungs are in before getting near the water! Disconnect the trailer lights before reversing down the ramp (lessens blown globes). Remember to connect them before driving home! Make sure someone is holding the bow rope when launching. Double check the drain bungs are in before getting near the water!! Keep an eye on the water tell-tail when out on the water. Do up the safety chain on the boat before driving out of the water up the ramp. Flush your motor for 5 minutes after every run in salt water. Hose down the trailer (frame, rollers, springs and hubs) after every dip. Check/grease the wheel bearings (and wheel nuts) a couple of times a year (I also use bearing buddies on my hubs). Use loads of Inox (with lanoline) on your motor (especially all around the tilt mechanism) and grease all moving parts on the trailer. And did I mention to check the bungs? Whew!!! After you do it a few times it will become second nature... Have fun and find some fish dude!
  13. Hi all, We took the tinnie out on Friday, launched at Rose bay and trolled our way to the heads without any hits. As we approached Sth Hd, swapped the small bait lure for an X-Rap 10 and a 8m Crazy Deep. First run past the bommie we had a spectacular hit on the X-Rap, it looked like a huge Aussie Salmon, jumping and tail walking like a Marlin!! I got my gf to wind in the other lure to avoid a tangle, then worked the acrobatic marlin/salmon in. After staying solid during all the aerial action he made a deep dive as I got him in close and... he spat the hook! Aaaaaaarrrghhh!!! Went back and tried another run with no hits, then continued around the south side, then back in along Nth Hd, zilch. Tried Middle Hd and Clifton G for a while with baits, loads of of small Snapper and Trevs, but nothing exciting. As we headed for home after the tide change we drifted Rose Bay for a couple of throwback Flatties. So ended up with nothing to take home, but still a great day on the water. Signs are looking promising, the water temp was around 18C, and loads of bait fish clouds showing on the sounder, so things are looking up! motohead.
  14. Cheers snag, I'll see what the weathers doing in the morning and give it a go... BTW, nice Jewie!
  15. G'day 'Raiders, I've got a day off on Friday, hoping to get out on the water for a fish (as long as the wind behaves itself!)... Haven't seen many reports about the Harbour this week, just wondering if there has been any action around the heads or Middle harbour? High tide at midday, is it worth getting some bait (squid or yakkas) early and looking for Kings around the usual spots? Or leaving it 'til later and trying some drifts for Flatties? Any input appreciated!! Cheers guys...
  16. Nice one! Nothin' better than a feed of whiting! The old live worms are the go...
  17. Yeh, we had a pretty quiet day in M.H. on Monday too! Put down a crab pot at Roseville before the high tide, then swung through Sugerloaf, then down to Quakers Hat wreck.. Couple of goldfish size squire to show for it! As m'attack says, loads of mullet jumpin' upstream of R'ville, we then trolled and cast the runout for flatties for no hits... I thought maybe all the boat traffic was making them shy, but a harbour full of dolphins wouldn't help either!! Great day on the water anyway! All good!!!
  18. Nice work! Great fun on light tackle. I nailed my first school Jew this time last year while flicking for flatties up the Georges. Well done Joco.
  19. Excellent!! Looks like they're waking up guys... Hopefully there are some still hungry on Monday!
  20. Nice work drummo! Bet your havin' an awesome feed right about now!! I'm getting my chance tomorrow, what sort of depth range?
  21. Watch out dude, too many donuts and Playstation make for a fat fisho!! Bad luck on the fishing mate, sounds like you gave it a good go! Next time....
  22. Well done! That's a bit different for Middle H! Good for a feed too! What bait/rig was being used? Pillies on gang hooks?
  23. OMG, don't do that.... Haven't you seen the price of a funeral these days!!
  24. Second hand tinnie (+ new O/B & new trailer) = $3000 Fuel & bait for a day = $30 Quality time on the water.... = Priceless!!!
