Just be careful where you get the pipi's from!

Plenty of snactuary & no collection zones in PS!
I remember squishing my feet around at Bagnals as a kid finding plenty of Sydney cockles & pumping for nippers.
Cant do that anymore!
It's fine to collect pipis and use them onsite for bait. The article you quoted referred to collecting and taking them home.

Hogwash. I was there swimming with my kids only last week in front Umina surf club near the flags. Heaps about. Peak season is October - back in the 80’s my Dad, brother and I would literally fill a bucket and BBQ them up. They aren’t anywhere near those sorts of numbers now but they are still there.
@Gengar remember you can’t take any except to be used immediately as bait. Do return any unused Pippi’s so that your future grandkids can catch them too. Low tide to mid tide - high tide can be tough.
Thanks for the correction. What do I know, LOL? Maybe there are a heap of beachworms there too, I just never tried as it didn't seem likely.

Great report - wish I was there! Lovely windless evening on Saturday, can see how glassy the water looks.

Great stuff! Georges River or Cooks River?

Hey I really like your writing style and sense of humour. Please keep the posts coming! And what a great, tasty bag of fish there dude, congrats!
-
Great photo mate! Looks like you take the skin off the fillets too.

Hey mate that's a nice looking outfit you're fishing with there (and of course a great fish too). Would you mind telling me what rod and reel you're using?
-
Hi Gengar, no you won't find pipis on Umina Beach, once again more on the larger ocean beaches.

Do you mean the flats at the beach or elsewhere?
Actually I might try my hand at beach worming at Umina Beach assuming ofcos there are beach worms there......but otherwise am interested in trying to find some pipi
Not many beachworms if at all on Umina as it's not really an ocean beach - if you wanna try, drive around to McMasters or Copacabana.
Yes the flats right in front of the caravan park you'll get flatties on the retrieve with worm or fish plastics.

Mate, i am actually heading over to the NRMA park at Umina Beach next week with my two boys and so trying to do research before I get there. I was thinking of just bring a couple 7 foot rod, put some dead bait and sit them in rod holders. I was thinking of using pillies (perhaps ganged?) as thats what i use for Sydney harbour but any bait in particular you recommend? Also I presume you would still need to find a gutter? Do you know what kind of fish are usually caught there? Thanks heaps!
Also never caught pipis but can you catch them on Umina Beach?
I used to take my kids there when they were younger. Throw out some plastics and retrieve them over the flats and you'll get flatties. Or get hold of some live worms at Woy Woy bait shop for some whiting.

That's hard core! Fish of a lifetime, just awesome.

Good on you, that looks about as good as it gets - idyllic surroundings, plenty of action, unforgettable time spent with loved ones and a good feed as a bonus. Exceptional results, keep it up.

Nice catch Ryder!
Great score picking up the Avon from Vinnies - mine was stolen from my car many decades ago!

Nice work @Ryder, I can't seem to get them on the line but get a few spearfishing. One day I might get some time to learn the intricate tide/berley/weed bait combos to get success with them, certainly an art. That's a great haul, enjoy!
Hi Lakelad, I used to catch blackfish all the time as a boy and young bloke. The most important tips I could give you are:
1. Fish light - no more than 6 lb trace
2. Balance your float (the smallest possible for the conditions) with lead on your line beneath float so that it is only just floating with only the very top of it visible. This way when the fish takes the bait the float will go down without the fish feeling any resistance.
3. Present your bait simply and naturally, not a big bunch but a small strip of weed or cabbage with a half hitch to keep the hook covered.
4. Vary your float depth if your not getting downs. I vividly recall one occasion arriving at a crowded rock spot beneath Waverley cemetery with about 10 people trying unsuccessfully to get blackfish. I had been there the previous night and knew they were feeding at a depth of only 5 feet or so. Bang I was on first cast and the next 4 casts, before I had to tell them to shorten their rig and then they were all onto the fish!
That's not all there is to it, but I reckon this will help!

Jesus mate I must plead ignorance - I thought it was 20. That's how long it's been since I've been fishing.
I'll know for next time.
I thought people were impressed - my bad. They were telling me I did a bad thing.
Over and out.
Good luck everyone!

His kid picked up 2 pipis - I think he'd be fine with the inspector.
But thanks for clarifying.
