  1. Hi all, Iam feeling a little adventurous and would like some info on the area around where glenbrook creek enters the nepean river. Have any raiders fished this area at all? Is it possible to camp there? Am thinking of hiking in from the jellybean pool in the national park. Has anyone done this walk before? Looking to stay 1 possibly 2 nigths and will be travelling light with just the bare essentials. Any info from anyone with experience in this area would be much appreciated. Many thanks troutboy
  2. Lovely fish Kael, well done. check out the smile. cheers troutboy
  3. Gday Nargse1 bass fishing awsesome fun, even small fish pull like trains. With the popularity of spin gear these days you would be mad not to use one. A lightish rod 2 to 4kg and some good braid of around 6 to 8 lbs loaded onto a half decent spin reel will get you into the action. A lot of lures used to target bass are very light in weight and can be hard to cast on bait casters unless you are proficient with them. Stick to the spin rod for now but dont discount the bait caster if you already have one. Most bass fisherman love to use surface lures but I have had most success using a small bets spin fitted with a small 50mm atomic curl tail grub in motoroil . Give it a go mate you will love it. cheers troutboy
  4. Try using double the number of turns in the braid side of the knot that you use in the mono or flourocarbon leader. Many of the newer braids available are IGFA rated so they will break just under their rated breaking strain.Pulling sharply on a knot is not a good way to test its strength, lubricate the knot well with saliva and pull the knot tight making sure you apply enough pressure to the tag ends of both lines. cheers troutboy
  5. Hi Jewfishrobby, I use fly and lures mostly but have been known to have some powerbait out there as well.Send me a pm when you think about heading up this way and I will try and meet up with you. cheers troutboy
  6. All the best to you buddy. Have a great day. cheers troutboy
  7. gday Gid, at this time of year its possible to wet wade but the water is still rather cool. I would suggest using some breathable chest waders if you are planning on spending time in the water. Most of the lakes and rivers have good casting areas from the bank so unless you have to wade to reach the fish you may be better off sticking to the bank/ shore. Any ideas on when you are heading up this way? Which lakes are you planning to fish? cheers troutboy
  8. Hi Kael, unfortunately I havent had the chance to fish much lately as I am preparing for a ten day camping trip to Lake Conjola. Looking forward to my first saltwater fly session. Once you have confidence in the baitcaster do yourself a favour and try some thin braid. You will be tossing light lures a mile in no time. cheers troutboy
  9. Hi Kael, Have you set up the r eel cast control properly? Once you release the thumb bar the lure should fall to the floor smoothly and once it hits the floor the spool should not keep turning, if it does tighten your cast control knob until the spool stops turning when the lure hits the ground. When you have done this you should be able to cast the lure quite aggressively without getting a birdsnest. I find it easier to start using a side casting action until I get my eye in ( so to speak ) and then progress to over head style casting. Also I use some casting plugs in various weights instead of lures, you should be able to buy them from any good tackle shop. Hope this is of some help. cheers troutboy
  10. Hi Gid, unfortunately most if not all of the rivers and lakes in the mountains area are a long way from any railway stations. The only trout lake even remotely close to a railway is Wentworth Falls lake which has reasonable numbers of good size browns and is a short level 10 minute walk from the station. Send me a pm when your thinking of heading up this way and I will try to meet up for a fish. cheers troutboy
  11. Cheers Mat, great info , lets hope I can convert it into fish. Thanks again troutboy
  12. Howdy all, Iam heading down the coast to lake conjola for a week in november and plan to do some flyfishing for flatties bream and whiting. I have never flyfished in the salt before and I need some ideas on suitable flies for the species mentioned above. I have a 6/7 wt rod and intermediate and floating lines but need some ideas on leader strength and set up. I have some beadhead wooly buggers are these any good to use.? Many thanks troutboy
  13. Gday all,I finished work early on wednesday as the weather was getting worse and I was working on a roof in the rain. On the drive home it started to clear a bit so I thought why not drag the flyrod out and go for a fish. Got home , grabbed the gear and drove to Wentworth Falls Lake. Just as I started rigging up the 6wt it began raining again quite heavily. Not wanting to waste an opportunity I donned the wet weather gear and started fishing. It was very quiet for a while then about 15ft in front of me the water suddenly errupted with fleeing baitfish being chased by a largish brown. I was fishing a bead headed flashback nymph and a red tag combo fished wet. Upon seeing the baitfish my thoughts were to change flies to a single black wooly bugger but for some reason I persisted with the red tag / nymph combo and was soon rewarded with a thumping take from a beautiful fat brown trout. The fish gave a very good fight for a good couple of minutes before I managed to tire it out a bit and land it. Although only a relatively short fish it was extremely fat , no doubt chock full of baitfish. After a quick pic it was released in good condition and swam of strongly. Quality of pic is a bit poor as it was taken using a mobile. cheers troutboy
  14. Hi Tommy G, When it comes to trout I am a strictly a catch and release fisherman so I cant really comment on the eating qualities of the local trout, I have eaten trout on a few occasions and never really took a liking to the taste. Water quality at Wentworth Falls Lake doesnt seem too bad, it certainly dirties up a bit after rain but the lake tends to clear up quite quickly and the trout I have been catching lately have all fought well above their weight and are very healthy. They seem to spend most of their time chasing small galaxias and the like so a bead head wooly bugger allowed to sink a bit and then a slow jerky retrieve has been doing the trick. Hooked into something quite large a couple of days ago but a little slack line meant the fish spat the hook after about 30 seconds or so ,it had some serious weight to it, shame I couldnt land it as it would have been my best fish to date. I normally fish the lake a few times a week so if you are thinking of heading up this way shoot me a pm and I will try to catch up for a fish. cheers troutboy
  15. I will second the cortland 444sl , great intermediate line. Good luck , hope to see a report in the near future. cheers troutboy
  16. Alls well Kael, only the one session on the trout last season, we must change that. Been hooking into a few at Wentworth Falls Lake lately, some good fish too, must head west again when I can, cant wait to get back out to the fish river as my casting has improved quite a bit over the last 12 months. If I am heading out that way soon I will pm you and see if you can make it. Take care and hope you continue doing well on the bass front. cheers Jamie
  17. Well done Kael, very nice early season effort. I am planning a couple of overnight trips into the nepean area soon, hope to get some early bass too. cheers troutboy
  18. Thats not good. I believe most trout stocked into lyall, thommos and wang came from that hatchery. Also a good spot to take the kids when things are quiet at the lakes. cheers troutboy
  19. Hi Fishlexic, great to hear that you have been lured to the dark side . While I am by no means an expert on fishing in the old dart I reckon you couldnt go too far wrong with a 9' 5wt rod and a weight forward floating line to suit. You dont need a fancy big dollar reel for trout, but you should spend up big and buy the best quality flyline you can afford. A good quality line while expensive will definately help your casting and if looked after can last many seasons. Hope this gives you some ideas cheers troutboy
  20. Maybe try some candle wax, wont do any harm and will ease the zips a bit too. cheers troutboy
  21. Just outside of Lithgow on the way to bathurst
  22. I have quite a few in the 50mm sizes but due to them becoming a collectors item they are not for sale,it will be very difficult to get your hands on any of his timber lures. good luck cheers troutboy
  23. I could be interested Mick, will have to check my commitments for the weekend, but I am definately looking forward to hitting thommos again. Will get back to you later in the week, by the way I am located in katoomba. cheers troutboy
  24. The ocean end of the lake is mostly shallow sand flats with plenty of flathead and bream and whiting. If you have access to a boat you can fish what the locals know as the steps where shallow water drops off into some really deep water very quickly. The steps are home to the monster flathead, just look around some trees in the caravan park where in the past some older fishos have nailed the heads of some really big flathead to the trees, some of them are as big as a shovel head.To the north of the main channel is lake berringer the entrance to which is sometimes impassable at low tide, but you can walk the boat over the shallow entrance and into an area that is rarely fished, have pulled some reasonable jews and large bream from this spot. Another spot worth a shot is Adder bay where you will encounter plenty of good size flathead and bream. The council caravan park has some excellent sand flats opposite that can produce some thumper whiting. Good luck and hope this info prooves useful cheers troutboy
  25. also Lake Wallace, Thomsons creek dam, coxs river ,fish river. Plenty of good water to choose from. cheers troutboy
