  1. Thats an excellent brown Kael well done in trying conditions, thommos always fishes best with a bit of wind and some dirty water. Top effort. cheers Jamie
  2. Awesome fish and photography Caddis, cant wait to get over there. cheers troutboy
  3. Nice to hear you got a fish or 2, thommos is fishing hard at the moment might see you up there sometime cheers troutboy
  4. Im in, either saturday is fine for me,I also have a spare rod and reel i can bring. I would not class myself as an expert but am more than willing to pass on some advise to any newbies. cheers troutboy
  5. gday all, have caught many fish there over the years including some nice browns up to 5 lbs. Unfortunately this was quite a few years ago now and after a very hot summer(the lake is reasonably shallow and heats up quite quickly)the remaining trout died. This was 3 to 4 years ago and to my knowledge the dam has not been restocked since. This is a real shame as plenty of people over the years have enjoyed having a fishery so close to home.I will call the local acclimatisation society and get some up to date info. cheers troutboy
  6. Some very nicely tied flies there Luderick angler, should grab the attention of a few trout.cheers troutboy
  7. Too right Kael, lyell, thomos and wallace are full of stocked fish ripe for the taking!I can only guess that bait fishos love a bit of peace and tranquility as well.I did offer a suggestion of the local stocked waters but it fell on deaf ears Lets hope after the flow subsides we get a good spawning season, cheers Jamie
  8. Hi Kael, the biggest brown I have pulled out of there so far has been just a smidge under 6lbs and about 56 to 58cm in length measured next to the rod and checked at home as I dont carry a tape with me .A shortish fish for the weight but the condition was superb!I have seen a few fish around that size in the approx 2km stretch that I fish which is pretty amazing really considering it is a popular spot and very easy access.Unfortunately the last time I was there a spin fisherman was keeping pretty much everything that he caught of a reasonable size and although totally within his rights to do so I dont know how long it will take for these fish to be replaced naturaly.cheers Jamie
  9. Gday Kael, great brownie you have got there, I have been fishing the coxs for a while now and have had some luck with browns and rainbows to 6lbs, mostly on the fly but spun a few up using celtas as well.Great to see lyell with some water but I think the skiiers will over run the place for the rest of summer making the fishing difficult.Went to coxs river last week but it was in full flood, might give it a go in a few days when the flows have settled a little.Be nice to catch up for a fish if you have some spare time, cheers jamie
  10. Gday Iggy, congratulations on turning to the dark side. Do yourself a favour and definately get some lessons to start off. I wouldnt try to teach your self to cast as you will end up frustrated and teaching yourself bad habbits. It may cost some good dollars for a lesson or two but it will be the best money you will spend. Cacthing any fish on a fly rod is so much more rewarding than any other method......enjoy. cheers troutboy
  11. Gday Tight lines, Thompsons creek dam would be your best bet at the moment. Lake Lyell will be overrun with ski boats with it being school holidays so I would stay well clear of there. No baitfishing at Thommos, lure and fly only. Its about a 15 min walk in from the carpark to the dam wall. Once at the top of the wall walk around to your left and follow the shore line, on that side there are plenty of shallow bays to spin with a plastic or try some olive wooly buggers on the fly rod. Some very big fish in there so make sure your tippet is at least 6 to 8 lbs. good luck cheers troutboy
  12. Hi Matt, awesome trip report, congratulations to dean , he really did cleanup! i have never seen water so clear other than in nz .Really good size fish and healthy too. Hows the legs Dean? cheers troutboy
  13. Thanks Scotty really appreciate the info, cheers troutboy
  14. Well done Scotty, you cant beat a live bait for bass on the surface. I am interested in your mullet catches , what methods do you use, cheers troutboy
  15. Good idea Iceman cheers troutboy
  16. Hi Geekfisho, my method for catching carp is as follows, I use 6lbs braid as a mainline with a small pea sized ball sinker sitting on a small swivel. A longish leader around 6 to 8 lbs at 1m long to a size 10 or 12 suicide hook baited with a single corn kernel. berley up with some corn set your rod in a holder with just enough drag to prevent an overrun and let the carp take the bait and 9 times out of 10 the fish will hook itself. Have fun cheers troutboy
  17. You can also purchase a product called a fly clip, they are that small and light they will not affect the action of any lure.Although if you have fat fingers you will need to carry a pair of long nose pliers to hold the clip while you attach the lure. cheers troutboy
  18. Well done Grant, some fine fish there. The net man takes a decent photo too. cheers troutboy
  19. Hi Tentonner, just a quick tip , you really should reload your braid on your overhead reel a bit more evenly as you will end up with inconsistant drag pressures when a king takes a big run.Without a level wind to to do it for you , you need to use your thumb to guide the line onto the spool evenly. btw nice combo cheers troutboy
  20. Yet another fantastic trip report matt, great to hear the fish are still there in numbers. Shame you didnt pin any of the larger specimens. when are you heading in next? cheers jamie
  21. Hi flycaster, at the back end of the dam on the left hand side pretty much directly opposite the quarry is a small creek that does flow into the dam after rain( runs down from a farm on the left)fish have been gathering in the small channel in groups of up to 1/2 dozen or more.If you move slowly and look hard you will see lots of fish in pairs barely 3 ft of the waters edge. Was there a few weeks back and landed a nice buck brown around the 6 to 7 lbs mark fishing in the channel / drain . cheers Jamie
  22. Hi guys, try focusing your efforts around the inflowing channels and windlanes. Plenty of fish still cruising the shallows looking for somewhere to spawn. They can be tricky to catch but if you move very slowly and lead the fish by a good couple of metres you are in with a chance.I have been doing best with a glo bug tied to the bend of a beadhead flashback nymph suspended under an indicator, adjust the indicator to suit the depth. You want the globug to drag/bounce along the bottom. If your indicator dips or stalls in its drift strike immediately chances are theres a fish on. cheers Jamie
  23. Hi all , you should also try betts spins, they are a smaller version of your standard spinner bait but with no jighead or hook attached, just a wire bent wire arm with attachment point at one end and a small colorado blade on the other. You add your own jighead and soft plastic to suit your target species. The bass in the Nepean river smash them hard as they are about 1/3 the size of a standard spinner bait. Give them a try, cheers troutboy
  24. Hi Jonathan, the flylines mentioned are suitable for a whole range of fish and situations , not just trout. cheers Jamie
