Earlier on this year was a forum here on Trev or Yakka. I was just brousing the topics and saw this one. It was a Trevally with yellow fins and tail. Could this be a Sand Trevally? According to my books it frequents waters more south of here but looks very alike. What do you reckon Flattieman? Cheers Jeff

Yeh Dan and Flattieman, I'm "pretty" positive cos like I said my mate was a pro a few years back and knows his stuff. But like someone said in an earlier post we stand to be corrected however, I would be prepared to put a wager on it. Pretty interesting topic though don't you think. Yeh I've got Sea Fishes of Southern Australia here, I think its a 1999 publish. Under Tassel-Snouted Flathead it reads this. Inhabits sandy bottoms in reef and weed areas of Australia's southern half (exept Tas). Base colour variable, including white, brown, orange, red and purple. Best recognised by the prominent spines on top of the head and the dark band along rear margin of the first dorsal fin. Bushy tenticle occasionally present on eye. Found NSW from Newcastle, Vic, SA to WA. Max. length 38 cm. How does that sound Dan? Cheers Jeff

Hey Flattieman, I would say a Tassel Snouted Flathead for sure. I spoke to a mate of mine who used to be a pro fisherman years ago and he said that they used to catch them from time to time outside on gravel and sand reefs. Just as good as any other flathead to eat. Yeh Blackfish, the Rock Flathead is another species again. Cheers Jeff

Hey Big-Banana, Its most likely a male Leopard Wrasse. They are a tropical species but occasionally found down here. I have caught them at Newport in the past. Cheers Jeff

Hey James, I smoke the big Slimies. They are great when cold, a couple of crackers and a cold beer . You can buy smokers from any tackle shop. They're simple to use, they come with a little metho burner and a bag of sawdust to get you started. I make my own brine with salt and brown sugar. The best fish to smoke are the oilier type like Tailor and Makeral. Cheers Jeff

Hey kbeef, Yes it could have very well been three marlin hanging around a bait ball no question about it. My question to you is about your knots. We have never had a knot fail on a sampo clip or swivel. As Dave said you set your drag at one third of the breaking stain at strike. Are you sure you were a quarter because thats pretty light as you need to be able to set the hooks good and propper? What wre you using , 15 or 24? You ned to get to the bottom of this one kbeef because to loose three lures in one hit is a bit costly$$$$. Cheers Jeff
