    Paraveins

A paravein is a board/metal plate or moulded plastic board that is designed to pull your bait down into deeper water - think of it as doing a similar job to a downrigger Evets
  3. Quite right guys, The Dojos hooks are not designed to flex. I remembered reading something written by Peter Pakula discussing his hooks in early 2006. Did some searching and found Peters thread. He was discusssing his new (at the time) Katana hooks. He stated that the Katana hooks were designed to flex out when leadering fish... Evets
  4. Great report, Made me feel like I was there on the boat with you.... The Dojo hooks are light weight hooks (usually for 15 kg and less)designed to straighten to aid in the release of the marlin by holding the leader and pulling hard. They are designed to be ultra ultra sharp and have great penetrating power so that light line classes can successfully pin the marlin in thier hard mouths (more difficult to pin marlin with heavy guage hooks and light line). From other forums Peter Pakula is very pleased with the dojos hooks... Evets

    Ice

Diver, I fill some 3 litre milk bottles with water and then add a coule of tablespoons of salt. By doing this the bottles freeze at a much lower temperature and stay frozen for heaps longer, though it can take a few days for the bottles to completely freeze. Out on the water, I make an ice slurry with salt water and add the frozen botles. Stays cold all day. Also get youself a good quality esky. It will help keep the heat out and the coldness in. Evets

    Slimeys Or Yakkas

Hi Linton, Slimies for me. Why ?? Slimies dont have lots of fin spikes for the predatory fish to avoid when eating them. Slimies can be eaten by predatory fish any way they can catch them but yakkas are head first only. I thought this for a long time but only had confirmation of this when I watched Al McGlashin in his livebaiting Stikezone video. If you havent seen this DVD I highly recomend it. AWESOME!!!! Evets

  10. Cain, The other wires are to connect the sounder to other equipment such as your GPS or VHF Radio. Dont need to connect them for the sounder to work. Evets
  11. Cain, I installed my FCV 620 exactly as VA911 described. I cut my power cable much shorter as I interfaced it with my GPS and DSC VHF radio. I was too lazy to strip the protective covering off the furuno harness to access all the interface wiring so I cut it much shorter and joined a new length of wire to the power which I connected directly to the battery. I soldered the wires together end then sealed it liquid electrical tape. This stuff is way cool. You paint it on like ummm arrr... paint and when it dries it forms a flexible waterproof rubber seal around the wire. Just dont forget to put a fuse in as close as you can to the positive terminal of the battery. Evets

    More Knives

My Dad is a fitter and turner and used to make knives as well. He once told me that the best steel to use for knife making comes from a wood working file. I will have to ask him why and maybe scrounge up a piccy as well. Evets
  16. Just to add to Mr Magoos post you should tighten the nipple straight away once its in the right spot. If you dont then air might get into the system. To stop air getting into the hydraulic trailer lines. I use a short (50 cm or so) bit of clear hose that is about 4 mm in diameter. It fits really snugly over the bleeding nipple. When the brakes are activated (by pushing the trailer against the garage wall) the fluid comes out and the nipple can be tightened without any air getting in. Pop down to Bunnings and grab half a meter or so of hose to do the same with your steering. If air gets in you will find that the steering will be less responsive when you turn the wheel. Evets
  17. Hi Roberta, When I was 18 I tore the cartilage in my left knee lifting weights. Pain was excruciating and felt like a hot knife had been stuck in there. Unmistakable feeling. I had a partial lateral minescetomy with key hole surgery and was walking within 2 days (lots of pain) and back training within a month. Mind you though at the time I was an elite athlete at the Australian Institute of Sport and had access to the very best of care. Your problem could be cartlidge but is not likely to be a tear. As discussed above wear and tear of the cartlidge would be more of an arthritic type pain. A tear is really painful. To me clicking sounds like a ligament problem. Evets

  19. My favourite book at the moment is Mark Kitteridges book How to Hook up on Kingfish... Excellent read. It’s a book from NZ and is a few years old now but each time I pick it up I learn something new The book I have been most disappointed with is Al McGlashins Fishing Bible - wayyyyy to many grammatical errors for my liking. Looks like the editor doesn’t know a thing about fishing and edited Als work to what she though made sense instead of leaving it the way Al had written it..... Pity because I really like Als articles and videos Evets

    Broken Reel Seat

AJB Sorry mate, misread your first post. Thought you wanted to replace the cork grip with hypalon . Cork grips are usually made by gluing a series of rings together to form a long tube. Look carefully at some cork grips and you will see what I mean. You can carefully cut a pre made grip lengthways in half with a razorblade and ream the hole to suit the blank. Epoxy and tightly wrap the grip with tape while the epoxy dries. Sand when dry and its all good. Done carefully (and skilfully enough) the join will be barely noticeable - much the same as the rings on the pre made cork grip...... Or you could buy the rings individually and split each of them in half and turn them down on a lathe but I’m guessing that you don’t own a lathe so this probably isn’t really an option.... In any event I have seen some of Tony’s finished work and it is always first rate. I am sure he won’t do Love to know how Tony approaches this. Maybe you could post a photo of the finished job as well ? Evets

    Broken Reel Seat

Hi AJB, A picture would help.... So.... with out actually seeing the rod. Yes it is possible to replace the grips but it involves removing the reel seat (but from the sound of it need to be replaced as its broken anyway). You would obviously need to remove the old reel seat and grips really carefully. I would use a dremel to remove the reel seat being careful not to score the blank at all. When I did this I cut all around the reel seat turning the blank so the cut ended up where it started (imaging keeing the dremel still and spinning the blank around) forming a series of rings. Cut the rings in half lengthways and remove the reel seat. Once all of the reel seat, glue and grips are removed measure the diameter of the blank (where the grip is going to go) and get a grip that has an inside diameter about 10-15% smaller than the blank to ensure a nice snug fit. Now the tricky bit. A bit of metho poured into the grips will help with lubrication and as quick as you can slide the grip onto the blank and up to where it belongs. The foam will stretch so that it will fit over the end of the blank and form a snug fit where it belongs. You may need to twist the grip on. Put a new reel seat on and then the rear grip. The reel seat may need to be packed up with some masking tape and needs to be glued in with 24 hour epoxy Evets

  24. Secki, Turn the fish symbols off and use the boomerangs. The fish symbols tend to show up anything in the water as a fish (eg weed). The boomerangs show up heaps more information IMHO. Grab a copy of Rick Hucksteps sounder book. It will help you to understand your sounder and what it is showing you Evets
