  1. Congratulations Netic & Mrs Netic , How long is she and how much did she weigh ? I bet your daughter is a bit bigger than the kings you caught a few days ago Well done, Evets
  2. kjd, Yes they do exist. Have a look below for few different ones. Try Ebay as well. Theyre quite often there as well http://www.biasboating.com.au/trailer_access.html Evets

  5. lukeric, Nice king. Bait is really plentiful anywhere near the wharves/jetties around the harbour. Just drop a sabiki jig down to the bottom and jig it a little. I was there on Sunday and caught about 20 yakkas in 30 mins. Evets. Now if I could only find a spot to sqid in the harbour I'd be laughing....

  9. Hi Fellow FR, Hoping for some advice. I have a 4.75 m firbeglass seafarer that has a problem. When I last winched the boat on the trailer I noticed that the winching eye (the place the winch rope attaches to the boat) has twisted around from its normal vertical position to something like 45 degrees off vertical. Its a loose and moves around with a bit of effort - but does not feel like it will come out. Not knowing how these winching eyes are installed I am concerned that it may come out next time I winch the boat onto the trailer. Anyone have any ideas as to how to reliably fix this? Or it best left to a professional? Pics to follow if necessary Thanks Evets

    Storing Gear

Harold, I'd seperate the reels from the rods, back off the drags, give the rods and reels a good clean and store them in a dustproof bag or blanket. Keep the rods well supported if you plan to keep them stored horizontally. evets
  13. Bathtub, I use a short leader because like to have as much control over the fish as possible. If I have a long leader I find that the swivel or brass ring is wound up to near the rod tip and the fish could still be 3 - 4 m away. With a shorter leader of say 1.5 m (and a long double of say 4 m) the fish is usually much closer to the surface. Much easier (and safer) for the gaffman. Sometimes I fish by my self and there is no way I could land some of the fish I catch if I had a long leader. Why do I use a swivel? Well I have noticed that with the heavier knife jigs they some times have a tendenancy to spin on the way down. The swivel obviously eliminates the twist. I should have mentioned that I use a game swivel and not the cheap brass ones. Nothing wrong with a long leader and brass ring. I fish this way because it works for me. Evets
  14. Hi Bath, A charter boat I fish from takes us jigging for kings on a few of the reefs around Kiama/Gerringong. Been down to JB as well. We use knife jigs in the 200 - 400 gram range depending on the current flow. We use a singe hook snelled on a short piece of dacron which is tied to the top of the jig. Dont bother with a hook at the bottom of the jig because we never seemed to get anything with it. We use a short length of fluro carbon leader tied to a swivel at the end of a long double. We use high speed egg beaters, 80lb braid and custom jig sticks. We fish in water in the 60 - 120 m range and always get amoung the kingies. Biggest so far for the group I fish with went just a touch over 17KG . Caught in Winter by my mate last year. So far as Wollongong goes I have heard that the ship wreck in stanwell park (?) has a few Jewies at the moment and they are being caught on pink 180 gram knife jigs. Perhaps jigging could part of a future FR workshop? Evets

    Hydraulic Brakes

Hi Guys, Thanks for the info. I have spoken to carasel and they have the rotors but they are a bit far away (about a 3 hour return trip away). I called BIAS today and they dont carry the rotors in thier product line. I called DBA and gave the sales guy the dimensions of the rotor and he told me thay dont have anything that matches my needs. I would machine them but my dad (who is a fitter and turner) told me that the rust on the remainder of the hub is pretty bad and that he wouldnt tow my boat with them. The brake guy I took them to to see if he could source them said the same thing... Supacheap have rotors but they are waaaayyy to big. I know the rotors are early holden and I have scoured the net looking for which model but have come up blank.. Any one have any ideas as to which model they may have come off (or point me to the appropriate web page to look for my self) ? I would have thought that they were off something like a HK but apparently they are not. Thanks again guys Steve

  20. Hi FG Some part of the hook should remain within the skirt for you to be able to claim any records if you are lucky enough to make that catch of a life time. Having the hook further back in some instances increases the hook up rate and generally wont effect the way the lure runs. I wouldnt worry about them being different. Are the skirts different lengths? Evets

    Hydraulic Brakes

Hi Guys, After reading other posts about trailer maintenance I decided that I should check the trailer brakes. I was horrified when I saw that the brake rotors were really, really rusty. The rust is about 2- 3 mm all over the rotor and I just don’t trust them to hold together much longer. So, being the prudent guy I am I have decided to replace them. However, upon visiting 2 brake shops and marine dealers I haven’t been able to find any replacement rotors . Spare parts places like repco and autoone cant help either . I don’t seem to be able to find a listing for TINKA in the white pages and I have also called some disc brake manufacturers and they don’t have anything like what I am after . My searches over the net have also come up fruitless. An option would be to go to the wreckers and buy some disks and callipers and buy a new axle stub and weld it on with a new calliper mounting plate but Id rather just buy the rotors..... Does anyone know where I might be able source some rotors ? For your information the trailer is a 1981 tinka trailer and the rotor has a diameter of 217mm and from one side the disc to where the wheel bolts to the rotor is 95mm. And help you could prove would be really appreciated. Thanks Evets
  23. Bas, I think that what everyone is trying to say is the taper is how stiff the rod is. The stiffer the rod, the faster its taper will be and the more effort you need to bend the rod. Imagine 2 15kg rods. One a 25 year old solid fibreglass rod and the other a graphite rod. The will both bend differently when you fight a fish and that difference in the bend is the taper. When you are fighting a fish the fibreglass rod will bend most of its length (soft or slow taper). The graphite rod will probably bend no more than about 1/3rd of its length (fast taper). Which is better for you? Well it depends on whether you are using mono or braid. And whether you have fished much in the past and what species you are targeting. If you are using braid (and less experienced) you will probably be better off (IMHO) using the slower tapered rod (one that bends about half its length) because the line doesn’t stretch very much and you need a little give in the set up (the rod will bend a little more before the line breaks). If you fish with braid and a fast tapered rod unless you are used to using this type of set up then you risk pulling the hooks. With mono you could use either type of rod. Personally offshore I fish with TDL20s using mono and softish uglystick rods. A lot of fishos use stiffer rods like backbones or Tcurves but they are a bit stiff for my liking. If you want to jig then a fast taper rod is the go. If I were to target big kings or offshore pelagics then I would use my custom made sabre (fast taper) which is more like a broom stick than a fishing rod. To test your rod to see what type of taper it has put it in one of your rod holders with its reel and run the line through runners and peel off about 5m of line. Set the drag to strike and walk backwards and stop just as the line slips. Look at how much the rod bent before the drag started to slip. If the rod didnt bend much you have a fast taper rod. If it bent most of its length its a soft tapered rod. Evets
  24. Netic, Great report! and Nice Kings. I normally get my livies from around the Jetties in the harour, but it takes a lot of hard work . I would really appreciate it if you could point me in the directon of the bait grounds. Any tips as to how to catch em? Evets
  25. Hi All, Great site - Just came across it and I love it!!! Now a bit about me..... Names Steve and I lived and fished in Canberra until I was 25 when I married my lovely wife and moved to her home town of Wollongong 10 years ago. I have 2 kids, a dog and a fighting fish. I have worked as a solicitor for the past 10 years where I have specialised in litigation and tax law. I have a 4.75m Seafarer Venus that I have used to extensively fish around Wollongong, Jervis Bay and the Shoalhaven river. My biggest Jewie so far has been just over 23lb and my biggest flattie so far has been 72cm. Yet to catch a decent king or Dollie but this year I am going to have a decent crack at these. In my (much) younger days I was the Australian Olympic Weightlifting Champion for many years and had the pleasure of seeing the worlds strongest men compete in the World Super Heavy Weight champoinships. In that competition I saw the world record Clean and Jerk broken. The winner lifted an amazing 273 kg - awesome !! Evets
