Hi guys, another rock fisherman drowned today, I believe on the north coast.
Just stay safe guys.
Some poor family is missing a loved one today and it is an absolute shame, my thoughts go out to his family and friends.
It isn't always "some one else" these things happen to.
There is risk in just about every thing we do so please guys, be carefull.

good one. As per previous post, I would think twice about getting in the water at night. We all tend to get tunnel vision when chasing things , especially at night. you might find yourself shoulder deep in the gutter in the blink of an eye.

Went out early Friday morning, thought I would try catch a squid or two and have a crack at a kingy.
as usual couldn't catch a squid to save my life( will work on that).
Headed out around north head to find salmon everywhere.
Off with the squid jig and on with a small flick bait. First cast and I was on.
2kg line and 7 foot bream rod and the drag was singing. u gotta luve a rod bent to the fore grip and braid squealing through the guides.
Only average salmon but great fun.
After 3 or 4 acrobatic fish I desided to head down of blue nose and see if there was any thing else but salmon.
I found seals, whales and more salmon and mutton birds.
tried dropping a octo jig and felt a tap, thought great something for the table, the weight came on and the rod loaded up, oh no, the line angle headed for the surface, another salmon.
After a great fight a pb salmon 71cm.
After another few salmon called it quits.
Gotta love an RDO.

I would try and set the hooks in the second fish set light drag and hope you get your first fish in before u get spooled or lose the second fish with the rod in the holder,
I was gunna say leave the boat in gear before I realised you were fishing from the beach.

I was chasing salmon of north head on Friday and with the mass of bait and salmon around the mutton birds were thick and persistent.
They don't seem to be as bad as they were two weeks ago but I didn't go further than 500 meters from the coast.

I hope you got some good info here mate.
I went out Friday around north head, forcast low wind and swell and small chop,
Wind was up early and with some sets coming in over 2m and a uncomfortable chop bouncing back of the rocks made it interesting.
The swell height itself I don't worry too much about unless your crossing a bar but swell frequency/pulse is more a factor for me.
no swell with big sea is more a concern.
At the end of the day you need to find your own limits.
Take on board what the guys here have to say, there is a wealth of knowledge you can tap into.

Dave, that set up would be great for reds on plastics depending on jig weight.
If your worried about grunt tie on a snap swivel and connect it up to say your cloths line. keep upping the drag until the line breaks. you will be amazed at how much hurt you can deal out with a rig like that. It is all about rod angles. (nothing past 90 degrees)

Mate we have been 15 mile out in 3m swell in a tiny. but due to a steady 5 to 10 not norwester no chop to contend with. back at the ramp by 11am. eating a pie at 12 30 watching every man and his do trying to out run a 30 knot soueaster from the headland.
you want to see a good pattern of weather and not just a window when going wide in small boats.

some thing like a curado would be where your looking, But for squid and flatties not ideal as stated by the others.

Mate. when I was a youngster I like the idea of having a massive marlin on my wall.
In the end we pulled the hooks on a 400 pound plus blue beside the boat. after a three and a half hour stoush on stand up 50, surprisingly I could not have been happier seing that beast swim away.
That was 20 years ago and I still some times think about it and wonder if it is still destroying bait up and down the coast and wonder how big it would be now.
When he sees a beakie lit up beside the boat let him make his decision,

personally I would rather see some one take a small marlin with less than a good chance of survival for a feed than a 400 pounder for the taxidermist.

Mate, in my humble opinion fuel issues usually result in a slow fairly smooth loss of power or cough.
That video shows a motor cutting in and out in a very harsh way.
Silly question are the coils connected to the correct cyclinder, and is it possible the timing is that far out it is causing pre ignition..

If you have an EPIRB I would risk it if conditions are ok and your boat is gunna do it easy.
Some things to keep in mind, Do you have a radio, will you have mobile phone service all the way, And are you experienced,
Are you taking kids or people that arnt strong swimmers.
Its a bit anal but when S#$% happens on the water they can go bad quick.

In my opinion even if you are going just outside you "should" take flares, While not a must it is a bit of extra piece of mind.

Does any one have any tips on fishing the fad off the gap for reds or kings.
I tried jigging but loose to much gear.

Any day on the water that puts a smile on a kids face is gold;
And people would pay a small fortune to whales like that.
beats mowing the lawn for sure.

We used to pump blood worms down the shoalhaven.
pump the mud straight into a sieve with an inner tube around it so that it floats.
we always pumped them in water about a foot deep.
And yes digging for them is not on, I was told the issue came to a head when a particular family decided to make a business out of it and left once productive banks barren and eroded.
