  1. Geeze mate, not a good run at all. I can relate to the Clifton Gardens experience.. I hate getting crowded out by people who thing personal space means getting in someone else's. Hope the next trip works out better. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  2. Love the "Bimini" and the view into the rain. Sounds like a great session. I am sure you will back for more very soon.
  3. Far out! You guys had everything happening there didn't you! Great fishing and another great report, it had everything, good fish, excitement, disappointment and an ear piercing! What else could you ask for!. One of these days I am going to have to visit this amazing canal that seems to produce so often for you guys. Cheers Jim
  4. Yes , this has been on my mind. I guess I initially ruled this out because blockages generally cause problems at high speed when the fuel demand is higher. Like the common complaint in a car where the engine starts missing at high speed because of a blocked fuel filter. I guess it could be part of the fuel system leaking air as I have seen this before with a loose rubber fuel line which sucks air but deals up when the suction increases as the pump works harder. Anyway... we will find out soon.
  5. Thanks. All sounds quite likely Idle speed is within range... when it will idle that is. Fuel filter is new. Good suggestions though.
  6. Hi Raiders, I am taking this back to the dealer to get fixed but I was curious what other people think is the issue. Had my motor serviced after the first 100 hours. The motor is about 12 months old and I always use 98 Fuel. First trip out after the service was a very cold morning and while the motor kicked over no worries it cut out after idling for about 1 minute. It was reluctant to start again so I gave the primer a few squeezes ( which I never have to do normally) and she fired up but cut our again after a minute or so. Repeated the procedure, slipped it into gear and took off. No Issues for the rest of the day even though I stopped many times during the day. Thought it might be fuel issues so I pretty much drained the half a tank that day and filled her back up in the afternoon. Last Thursday I went out again an the same thing happened but it was much worse. Even when the engine was warm it would not idle for more than a few minutes before it cut out and wouldn't restart unless I pumped the primer. When it started again it was fine and it ran fine at speed. Later in the day it cut out under the spit bridge after motoring up at around 4 knots for about 5 minutes as you do in the no wash zone. I did notice a smell of fuel from the motor after idling for long period that I do not normally notice. I took the engine cowling off and there is no sign of a fuel leak around the injectors or any where else for that matter. I figure its probably not a fuel blockage or restriction because it runs fine at speed. I figure its not a loose fuel line connection sucking air for the same reason. The smell of fuel at idle, the cutting out and the requirement to pump the primer to restart suggest to me that it is running way too rich at idle and the fuel pump at idle just can't keep the fuel up to the injectors. Now I am pretty sure that the motor has an electric fuel pump so that makes it a little unlikely that fuel delivery is a problem at idle even if the engine is running way too rich. I am thinking that the idle speed settings are screwed up. As I said its going back to the dealer but I was interested to know whether my fellow raiders could diagnose this one. I will let you know what it ends up being and Kudos and Respect to the one who gets it right! Cheers Jim
  7. That's great news... Hey and both those possible causes were identified in this post.... just goes to show how much knowledge there is in the fishraider community.
  8. Ha Ha, A nice addition to the Dad Jokes
  9. Nice whiting and good spotting on the school of tailor. That's a great area to fish with the national park in the background and the clear water. A nightmare to navigate for the uninitiated though with all the twisting channels up in the arms.
  10. Yes there were some jackets and sweep amongst them but there was also loads and loads of yakkas.
  11. I found I lost a lot of kings around the structure because I was so used to fishing light as I would for all other species. Kings are too powerful for light tackle so 30lb is a minimum to keep them away from the structure during those initial few runs. What is helpful though is to get to know the drag on you reel. You would be surprised how tight you have to wind the drag to get even to 50% of the breaking strain. Buy an inline scale and attach it to something solid, attach the line and then load up your rod as if you were fighting a fish. Load it up to 50% of the line rating and then pull some line off the reel by hand as we would all do testing the drag manually. I guarantee you will be surprised how hard is is to pull 15lb. This will allow you to wind up the drag a lot harder than you may have in the past and still be well within the breaking strain. Cheers Jim
  12. Yes ... great day... can't wait for summer... longer days , warmer water and kingfish.
  13. yes... a little known and very obscure rule this one. I would not be likely to break this rule as I usually eat fish fresh and only freeze portions of something like a larger kingfish. But you would have to ask how in the hell would they ever police this? Have you ever been asked by a fisheries inspector ... " Nice Catch Buddy but how many fish have you got in the freezer at home?" "None?" "OK .... best be coming back to your place for a look! Just wait a minute while I take the boat back to base and get my car.... " "What's your address again?"
  14. That's nice and close. I saw some boats about that far offshore and I was going to venture out but I was having a little problem with the motor after the recent 100 hr service so I decided against it. Were the birds active over the schools?
  15. Hi Raiders, Was on the harbour at dawn today so I checked out north head to see if there was and Salmon action. Couldn't find any so I went and checked a few markers to see if there were any kings floating about. The western wedding cake had some likely marks on the sounder. I don't think they were big fish but I think this is pretty typical of the way kings show up in mid water. Anyway, they wouldn't take a squid strip or a live yakkas or any soft plastic I threw at them. I fished sow and pigs for a feed of trevaly but it was a little tough due to massive amounts of bait fish picking at the baits. Bait fish were everywhere at the markers. The Trevs were not particularly big but they were in great condition. and this one is for the fisherman6784... There you go buddy ...yet another PJ. At around 11:00 I headed back over to North Head. There were lots of seagulls and quite a few boils so I started casting various soft plastics, metal slugs etc at them. There were half a dozen boats by now and I saw pretty much everyone hook up but not multiple hook ups so we were all struggling to match the hatch. There were a couple of guys using flies but most were tossing light coloured SP's. I figure that even if you select the wrong lure you are gong to get one fish that takes it purely on reflex and I think this is what was happening as I did not see any anglers catching many fish. I eventually got some takes on this popper below. I landed one ( no pic sorry ... too keen to release and get another cast in) and it was around the 60 cm mark. There were boils all over the place for about an hour or so and some very big fish among them. Pretty exciting stuff really in spite of the few hookups. It all died down so I went back to all the markers again to see what was on the sounder but couldn't find anything. Called it a day and went home and ate some trevally sashimi. Cheers Jim
  16. I have a 4500 and a 6000 baitrunner. I think they are very well made robust reels and if you are in the camp that believes a fish should be struck early then it can be used that way. If you are in the camp that believes better quality fish are more cautious and will tend to swim away with a bait before engulfing the whole thing then the bait runners really come into their own here particularly for jewies. They use them extensively I believe in Port Phillip Bay in the Snapper Season. Personally, I use them more when I am fishing late at night and there is not so much action. I think the fish often hook them selves if you give them little resistance. This is the whole principle on which the course fisherman seem to operate expect they use an open bail arm.... a old trick the estuary bream fisherman used to use to great effect. It's one of those tricky subjects because there are plenty of fisherman out there who catch fish on a strike 'em early and strike 'em hard approach and I certainly agree with cameldownunder and that striking early is the go with Trevs, but perhaps not so hard because of the soft mouths.
  17. Excellent! I am going fishing tomorrow so I will put that batter straight into practice! Cheers Jim
  18. Well that's good to hear and certainly news to me and a total surprise... I guess local experience is always the best. Best check the local rules though.
  19. I agree. Rose bay is the wrong environment but due to over harvesting Sydney beaches are also a waste of time.Haven't spotted them on any Sydney beaches for years. I have occasionally seen very small ones, almost like they were strays on Deeban Spit in the Hacking so whether there will be an eventual comeback I don't know. If you want to satisfy your curiosity regarding the effectiveness of the bait you could buy some live from the markets. Having said that, I agree with Sydneyfisher12, Get yourself a yabbie pump and get into the pink nippers, they are a gun live bait for a whole range of species and there a plenty of spots to collect them.... but check the local rules first! Cheers Jim
  20. I am relieved to hear that! I was beginning to think I was in " Jim! Nobody does that any more!" territory again.
  21. Good move. If its a new boat its not your problem. You might spend hours finding the issue and then you may still not have the resources to fix it. Perhaps give the boat a good going over first to make sure you can report any other concerns to them at the same time to save having to get the boat here and back which detracts from fishing time!
  22. Fancy Fish Chef eh!... You've just been voted as the new Raider's recipe provider! (by me at least) By the way. Can't help but respect a man who fishes before work and faces the cold beach shower to boot. Well done.
