  1. Just back from a trip to the Town of 1770. Went out on a charter with first mate and brother in law. The charter was with Damien and I can't recommend him enough. He took us to his spots, basically isolated rocks and reefs that he fishes once a month or 2. Amazing results. Forgot to photo the larger GT's, Cod, Red Emporer as having too much fun....The Reds went back - undersized. The Coral Trout was fantastic on the webber. I forgot to mention the YFT which we have enjoyed for a few days - fresh Sashimi..mmmm....and we've got Spannish Mack, GT and Coral Trout in the freezer now. The best part was that first mate couldn't wait for people to bait her hook during the hot bites and did it herself....she's got no excuses now... Anyway, a great day. A few photos of the fun we had.
  2. Greetings I looked up the dpi website and found this. The link will take you to the fishing guide and I've cut in the relevant bit. http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pd...49/sw-guide.pdf Fin fish All fish are subject to bag limits and many are also subject to size limits. See bag and size limit section (pages 38) for details. You must not alter the length of fish by filleting and/or removing the head until you are well away from the water. This rule does not apply at areas normally used for cleaning fish such as boat ramp cleaning tables, if the fish are for immediate consumption or immediate use as bait, or for fish that do not have a legal length. You may clean fish by gilling and gutting only. NSW Recreational Saltwater Fishing Guide 2009
  3. Thanks guys. The best part of the catch was watching his face when the fish was taking line time after time. The shouts of YES! when the fish was netted was pretty cool too.... Cheers
  4. Hey there Raiders, Took the young fella out for a fish off the third runway and here's what came up the burley trail. Not bad on 4lb braid /10lb leader. It gave him plenty of curry with run after run. At 57 cm, the lucky Kingy got to fight again another day.
  5. G'day, I like a 2 hook rig using a sliding snell. That way you can neatly slip the second hook down at the head just for the greedy kings that don't want to take the whole squid. Cheers
  6. Hi There, Could you please add Hookem and Mrs Hookem to the list of attendees. Looking forward to finally meeting a few Raiders!
  7. Are they testing a new form of deckwash?
  8. Mrshookem loves fishing, but doesn't like touching anything. So far she has caught a 4 foot Port Jackson in BBay and a 2" squire at Bantry Bay. Re: the Port Jackson, she said rather quietly - "I think I'm snagged, the line's caught on the bottom". She passed me the rod and after 20 mins the little fella was on the surface...It was 4 pound line, so it took a bit of time. Turns out, she'd been on for 30 minutes, but didn't want to own up to being snagged..??? I was busy with the little nephews - we were busy smashing the trevs. The squire was anounced with great fan fair when hooked...I thought it was going to be a beauty..... It's great fun though! Mrshookem is an expert driver of the boat onto the trailer....which is a great help. Cheers
  9. Here's another map site. www.worldfishingmap.com It's a google earth style map, you can zoom right in on your favourite location, to such an extent that you can see the shallow water with rocks/weed. It may be just of interest, or it may help find the potential areas where squid and other bait might hang, or new areas you might want to check out... Cheers

    Harbour Today

Hey Dan I know this won't ease the pain, but maybe it'll make you laugh..At least you didn't launch the boat before you found out you had a problem.... Last year, backed our boat off the trailer, I then heard her ask why the boat only goes in circles?? Turns out the steering arm had frozen (it was first launch coming out of winter). Anyway, she tossed over the anchor and the wind was kind. Blew her in close enough to toss me a rope.... Now I keep the grease up and do a few more little checks the day before use... Cheers
  11. I've seen the same thing happen twice this year. There is a strange sort of silent moment when the poor guy driving up the ramp processes the crunching noise behind him...
  12. Thanks Evan, I really appreciate your comment - especially as you have one. I just can't explain how exciting it is to be moving from a small aluminium boat to something capable of going offshore. I'll post a picture in due course so that any Raider who wants to say g'day can do!!! See you on the water!!
  13. Hi Raiders I don't know a lot about the electrical equipment/gadgets available and I'm hoping for some great advice..... After getting some experience on the water with my aluminium runabout, and after a good deal of research I'm (ie the has given permission) a bit keen on getting a Trophy 1902WA - plan is to be able to go outside and catch big things. Trophys only come with Mercury engines. NAVMAN sounders etc can apparently link up with the engine and provide various kinds of data. The sales guy is obviously pushing NAVMAN. Specifically he has recommended the Trackfish 6500. I plan on keeping the boat for many years. The cost of the boat (let alone fishing outside) is not small, so I don't mind spending abit on this gear if it's worthwhile. So my questions are: Is the engine data worth having? Is the 6500 overkill - its not cheap? What's your preferred brand/setup for this kind of fishing? Is it better to have separate units for GPS/chartplotter and sounder? Any other advice you have is gratefully received!! If I go ahead with the purchase, I'll have a 2yo Stacer Sunmaster (4.6m) going!!!!! Much rather give a good price to a Raider then to have to trade it in........ Thanks everyone - heaps..
  14. G'day guys I gave the harbour a shot this morning as well. Very quiet. It was a bit more windy than I had expected. Had bought squid, SP's and caught some yakka's (can't seem to manage a squid to save myself) and tried a few spots. No takers... Something took off with one of my livies, but didn't manage to hook up. Still, it's good fun to hear the action as the reel starts to sing.... Today was a day where I simply gained more valuable experience!! Oh well, I coulda been workin.... Do kingies go off the bit when its windy??
  15. Greetings Raiders! I thought this little story might be of interest to keen snapper fisherpeople.. Over Christmas, First Mate and I went to Sea World. There is an attraction called "Shark Bay", which is a massive pool with lots of big sharks, fish etc. that you can view from an under water viewing area. Whilst we were there, the fish were fed - chunks of fish (say 5cm square) were thrown in the water. A good sized snapper came for a taste. It sucked the fish into its mouth and spat it out again. It repeated this numerous times before taking the fish and swimming off. I guess the fish are fairly well fed (otherwise the sharks would clean up), so there was no great hunger to cause the fish to smash the food on offer.... I hope this helps next time the snapper just wont seem to take the bait...give it a little time... Cheers everyone and have a great long weekend..
