  1. I know I'm probably breaking some sort blackfish religious code by asking this, but here goes... Can anybody tell me a reliable spot for blackfish in a Sydney Harbour land based? Feel free to PM me. I only fish to catch a feed and my wife and 2yo don't eat all that much, so I probably won't make a huge dent in population numbers. I'm also an average blackfisho, so chances I'll catch something are also slim! Thanks in advance!

  2. They say you learn more from those trips you don't catch fish. Using this philosophy, I must be one of the most learned fishermen going around! Lol. Anyway, My last two trips have been pretty disappointing to say the least. I am a 'confidence' fisherman. I need some encouragement or a few bites or downs to keep me going otherwise I pull up stumps pretty early. There's only so many hours I can sit with 0 action. But In the spirit of sharing and trying to help myself and others, here are my two trips:

    Friday, Watsons Bay baths

    Target: Blackfish

Never fished here before, but thought id give it a crack. Got some cabbage from the rocks on the way to Watsons, then hit the wharf. Fished about 2 hrs and had about 4 or 5 downs, but couldn't hook up. I was encouraged with the downs, at least they were there, but very inconsistent. Tried all different depths from 0.5m to almost 3m. Also burleyed lots too.

    Saturday, La Perouse Bare Island

    Target: tailor

Was initially heading to my favorite eastern suburbs rock ledge, but when I got there and saw the high tide and 1.5 swell, I thought better of it. La perouse was rough too, but still fish able. Threw out a pilchard, and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. The only good thing about not catching fish is that you don't use much bait. So I threw out a lot of burley, pillies and bread, but this didn't help. 3 other guys were spinning for pelagics, but they had no luck. Definitely fish there as some Asian fishos, who must have fished most of the night, left with a few. After 1.5hrs, I'd had enough.

Tight lines raiders! Always next time :-)

  3. I tried a new technique on the weekend... Stopper, large float about a three hook style paternoster rig with a small-med sinker at the bottom. Baited with tiny bits of pilchards. I found the float provided enough resistance that the yakkas basically hooked themselves. The three hooks simply means you don't have to keep rebaiting some often. It also helped that there was a school of thousands of yakkas around the rocks too!

  4. I was thinking to venture into 'the shire' for a fish. I've never fished the beach, and I normally like to fish early mornings. Does anybody have any tips about where to park or areas of the beach easiest to access? I'd like to avoid surfers and swimmers where possible. Thanks

  5. I use the same ones. My first rock shoes lasted almost 10 years only to have the shoe lace eyelets rust out. I'm current using a nice pair of old Brooks joggers- no metal. Some weird gel stuff came out when I drilled through, and I has to get some longer threads, but they're super comfy.

  6. Any other spot on that beach? I dunno much given I am still newbie :P

What will you usually used to get these salmons out?

I usually use soft plastics, vibe, blades..

There was another fisho there and he hooked something that took all his line away leaving his spool empty :P I am assuming that should be a huge fish given he was fishing with a 6000 reel and 50lb line.

He told be on tuesday he had a huge kingfish.

    Below are my lures:

I am planning to get this to target some salmon:

Spykey, I usually catch salmon on bait, pilchards work best. You can catch them on soft plastics, but it's a lot of effort to constantly cast and retrieve on the beach. Try south maroubra too, there's an express rip along the rocks that holds fish. If that guy had 50 pound line on, I reckon he had a stingray or shark

  7. Hi Jason, I fished there around April last year off the beach. Lots of little Tailor around at the time. I only landed a few as I was using bigger hooks. I'm sure there'd be bream and flatties as well around the gutters.
