  1. Yeah - I find chicken thigh is a lot better, the normal chicken breast just gets torn apart by the pickers and pulled off the hook too easy.
  2. Just wondering if anyone can suggest some shore accessible spots around the south side of Broken bay or Pittwater? I am looking to expand my options and try new areas and I am fed up with feeding parking meters to get anywhere in the main harbour. I notice Flint and Steel has some walking tracks to it but I am not sure how practical it is to fish there or if the access is that good from the available roads. I don't mind a little hike to get there, but I don't know what the shore access is like or if the walking track is practical for taking a bit of gear down. Hoping to target some jewies but open to any decent bream/flathead/tailor options.
  3. Mullet fillets, although over the weekend I didn't have a chance to pick up some so I was using servo pilchards hoping to convert them into tailor fillets. With the squid jig I kept in mind something I read which was if I wasn't getting snagged I wasn't trying hard enough, and I was certainly doing that, but I think I need to slow down the retrieve. Hard to know if its technique/jig or whatever when there seems to be none around anyway - I have seen them there before just swimming about in front of me but last night there was hardly anything about.
  4. Good work on the squid - I had a little go for them next to the bridge on sunday night on the high tide but no hits, mind you I don't know what I am doing with squid jigs yet but I have seen others take them from there. I have hit Narrabeen and fishermans beach a few times over the last few weeks with no success - not sure if that is just me or the times I am picking to go (generally high tides on friday/weekend nights) but its been very quiet when I have been out. I was hoping for at least some tailor or sambos while I was targeting jewies but not a touch at all, save a wobbegong last weekend at fisherman's beach.
  5. I had a go there on Friday night. No bites, but a lot of weed gardening Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Don't be embarrassed - rock up like you know exactly what you are on to and what you need to do it with You got two more fish than I managed friday night with a 12ft and 7ft rod, a backpack full of tackle and an ensemble of buckets and supporting gear
  7. I tried fishermans beach and colloroy last night for not a touch. Mind you I only had frozen servo pillies - I was hoping to convert them into a tailor for jewie bait Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. As per this part of the guide: http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/regulations/sw/sw-bag-and-size/about-bag-and-size-limits "Bag limit is the maximum number of fish per person in possession. A maximum daily bag limit of 20 applies to any fish or invertebrate not included in the tables bag & size limit tables." So, if its not listed with size/bag limits and is not on the protected species, you can keep up to 20 of them.
  9. The waistline is a lost cause, at least I can improve the fishing Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. A guy at a tackle shop the other day described them as "puppy dogs", it didn't quite seem that way to me when I had it landed but really I have never dealt with a shark before, even if it was a puppy shark The little one my mate caught was snapping around on its tail and this one was jumping around a bit too so I wasn't sure where to grab. I probably could have got it either side behind the head to maybe move it clear of the water and sort out a better picture and maybe attempt getting my rig back. Thanks. Definately hoping for that silver ghost
  11. I have been trying some new beaches to get a feel for other areas. The last few times I would have tried moving except it would have been a hike to find a free patch of beach I also have some lures that I might try when I get the time to do a wander along a beach Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I recently did the hunting around for a heavier surf rig. In the end I went for a Fin Nor Lethal 60. The other options I looked at were the Pflueger Salt and Spinfisher SSM and SSV. The SSV was nice but too pricey, the SSM seemed fine but just a little less refined than the others. The salt seemed a good solid reel and I was set for that but couldn't go past the Lethal being on special. All these were in the sub $200 range. From memory I got the Lethal for about $100. It's held up well so far by yet for a big test, only a 4ft wobbegong so far. Just some alternatives to consider if you are looking for a cheaper setup. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. I don't doubt they get bigger, but it is by far the biggest thing I have had on a line so far My mate who was with me sent this shot of my daughter and I while I was helping her with her fish, I quite like it. Photobucket seems to not like scaling these panoramic ones, bah.
  14. Thats awesome - clearly I have been fishing too heavy going for my first jewie
  15. I cheat - I pick it up $10 worth at Costi's I would prefer to go for livies instead but I don't have the time available to collect them, as I usually only get enough time to rush out for the right tide.
  16. I have been out a few times mostly at Narrabeen (as per my reports) but no luck so far - seems I pick the right time and tide with the wrong weather, or the wrong moon, or simply can't get away when the times are perfect Similarly I see many others seem to think its a good time to be out but no-one is hooking up. Not sure if its just a quiet patch coming into winter or if the fish are confused by the warmer temps at this time of year. Last few trips I was hoping for at least some Salmon or Tailor while I was out for Jewies but not even a touch. I think I had a similar take the other week when I think I was getting hit by a small shark - would grab the bait, take weight but could not set the hook (same two hook rig).
  17. Thanks - he was pretty passive until he got near the shore then he would turn on the power. Easily the largest fish I have caught so far. Already decided my next bit of kit will be a small gaff My daughter was pretty excited and was keen to tell her brothers when we got home. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Thanks - thought I would just put it up for intel for others wanting to try - as much as any of my results could be a guide for anyone else anyway
  19. Planned to try on the high tide this evening and a co-worker had similar ideas. Having had no luck at Narrabeen I wanted to try somewhere new so we decided to meet up at Fishermans Beach, Colloroy. My 7 year old daughter decided she wanted to join us as well for her second attempt at fishing. Met up around 4:45 and setup just in front of Florence Ave. Set my daughter up with my light rod and a small bit of mullet, before I even got the rig out for my rod she was claiming she had a fish. I figured it was was weed in the waves but I started helping her wind in as she was struggling a little. To my surprise as we wind it in I see a flash of a bream in the wave and I start encouraging her to bring it in but she was a little overwhelmed and it went slack and the fish got off. Set her up again and she lasted that cast - she decided it was too hard and she was scared of the incoming tide and impending darkness and so spent the rest of the time out asking how long we were staying (I tried). Not long after my co-worker got a small wobbegong (40cm) on some squid and sent it back. I was sending out mullet fillets on the hope of a jewie but I wasnt sure the reef area we were in was suitable. I got plenty of bites though, mostly seemed like small hit and runs, nothing that was going to take the size hooks I was using. Lost of a bit of tackle to snags and that seemed to be the order of the evening, retrieving weed, detangling rigs or pulling out snags. Right on about 7pm I was going to retrieve thinking I had a snag. As I lift the rod I feel it separate so I start bringing it in and feel a lot of weight. "Great, huge lump of weed" I think to myself. Then I feel a kick and the rod starts jumping a little - curious. I keep retrieving and feel some movement then the line takes off for a short run. Holy crap, I am on to something solid! I settle down and start using the rod to lift and then retrieve and feel I am making ground. As it comes in near the shore break it kicks off and takes line again and heads out. At this stage I think I have a ray as it was a lot of resistance. I keep bringing it in, holding for a wave and then trying to pull it in with the wave. Every time on the shore break it takes off again. This repeats for what felt like about 3 minutes until I get sight of it in a wave - its a shark. After another few repeats I have it on the sand just on the waters edge. On inspection I see its a Wobbegong - guessing shy of 4ft or there abouts. At this point I realise I have plan for what to do next - no gaff or tools to grab it with. I had 15lb mono line and a 60lb leader, but I had shortened the leader to help with casting so I was not keen to reach in that close to try and pull it in by the leader. I tried dragging it a little with the main line but that simply snapped at the swivel. I had no idea how to go wrestling with it or if I should even try picking it up. The little one my mate had earlier was able to snap around on its tail and I figured this one would do the same. So I took a few snaps with the phone (all useless in the dark) and let it go back in the waves. As it took the last of my snelled rigs and my home curfew was impending I decided to call it a night. Quite happy to have had something that size to have a proper fight with, gave the gear a workout and I was happy I was able to think through the fight and not just try dragging it in (especially with only 15lb mono). Good jewie training I hope
  20. Rushed out to make Narrabeen on the high tide this evening - made it around 4:50 so pretty much at the top of the tide. Only had a short time as I was expected back home for dinner. Set out a few mullet chunks over about 2 hours for no takes. Last retrieve I found my two hook snell setup had one hook missing. The bait didn't look touched so not sure what happened, it was a flimsy fillet so it might have been rubbed on the other hook. Decided to save bait and home credits to try again tomorrow. Plenty of others out but seemed fairly quiet. Surf was up on last week and it looked promising but no obvious gutters up the north end as best I could tell. As the tide retreated it turned washy and seemed like the deeper water was right out back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. My office just got moved to 10 minutes walk from Walsh bay - I took some lures and SPs in the other day to have a play during lunch but really didn't have time to dial anything in. Was going to ask regulars what sorts of methods might be effective there. I see plenty of Bream milling about but they didn't seem to take much interest, and trolling out into the depths didn't get any reaction.
  22. I think this constitutes cyber bullying, rubbing it in like that Nice spot and nice catch. Enjoy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. I had a go there a while back. Where the rocks start at the south end of the beach I was getting choppers and some bream. There seemed to be a reef just off in front of the rocks where I was getting good hits. Not sure about flatties but the sand and weed there looks the goods for them Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
