  1. Has anyone tried to just drop a jig straight down the pylons they're standing on to catch squid? Can they live on a pylon? I've read they prefer sandy areas.

Was walking around one today and noticed how much kelp is around there, not sure if the action of the jig would be very good just going up and down though

  2. I've got 2 spools for a 6500 baitfeeder rod. My dad prefers to use mono so I want to spool up with one mono, but i've read everything from 20lb mono to 80lb braid.

We're not targeting one metre monsters. Just live baiting or soaking a bait around middle head. What is a good strength of mono to use? I'll probably spool up the with 40lb braid

The reels max drag pressure is rated 22lb. It's said to hold 292m of 20lb mono

    Cheers

  3. burley was pureed blue fin tuna, ocean trout, snapper, bass grouper, cuttlefish, rye bread and water!!! I am a chef at a fancy seafood restaurant so i have endless supply of fresh fish scrap for burley. and by the way buddy fresh fish does not smell, a burley scoop keeps it off ya and a cold shower at the beach afterwards is so invigorating!!!!

    haha im blown away!

  4. Just wondering what you guys think of bait feeder / runner reels? The ones where there is a light drag setting and a heavier drag setting which you can flick to.

Is it superior to setting the hook yourself?

One issue I have is, will this only be good for larger fish? I assume that non aggressive fish might just chomp at it as opposed to taking off with it? As in, it might work for a kingfish that hits it aggressively because its a fish that swallows others in 1 or 2 bits. But an average size tailor, salmon, trev etc isn't going to behave the same way.

I'm bait fishing off the rocks in the harbour. Sometimes with ganged pilchards, other times with livies under a float.

I'm tossing up between a bait runner or a lighter rod. Not sure what will make the biggest difference to catch rate

    Cheers

  5. Theres been a consistent drop in pressure over the last few days. I went out on Saturday late arvo to have a go and it was absolutely dead.

However looking at the forecast there is a dramatic increase in pressure today and tomorrow. http://www.worldweatheronline.com/Sydney-15day-weather-chart/New-South-Wales/AU.aspx

Going off some past threads about the topic, it would seem that tomorrow would be an awesome time to fish. Is this correct?

It looks like there are gonna be 25knot winds tomorrow though. But dramatic changes in barometric pressure = weather changes = not calm. By the time the winds drop to below 15knots the pressure is steadying and I assume the fish less active?

Can anyone shed some light on the matter before I go punish myself in 25 knot winds + rain for 4 hours?

    Cheers!

  6. We were fishing for about 4-5 hours. Mucked around for the first couple of hours changing ledges, making burley etc. All fish were basically caught during first 2 hours of run in tide and 1 hr run out tide... could have bagged more blackies but got snagged and lost rig and called it a day as we had enough for a good feed.

The blackies would not touch cabbage/weed at all. I started with cabbage with no downs. I actually got first blackie on squid strip and the rest of white bread. Bread is one of my favourite baits as I can catch all my target species with it.

How do you attach the bread securely to the hook? My bread just flings off. If i squeeze it too much it tends to get brittle. Thanks!
