  1. were you around the corner on the mud/sand flats.

I caught my biggest flattie on sat morn up near figtree bridge over 60cm's

i tied the area you where at about a fortnight ago and only pulled in 1 little flattie

in the summer I fish there every 2nd day after work and normally go pretty good

although the toed fish are little turds

    that my local spot

    cheers

  2. Jeese Mate, No Trout for all that work

Sounds like we need to hook up for a session closer to oberon. :biggrin2:

Seriously though i myself returned on many occasions fishless from that stretch of the river. I recon the low water levels last summer may have wiped a lot of trout out that far downstream. You would be suprised how hot the water temp can get in mid summer (25+) which is may too hot for most trout.

When i was there last i only managed a couple of small sickly rainbows (stocked) that did not look in very good condition

    post-2475-1191746725_thumb.jpg

If you are seeing fish without spooking them that is a good start, were there any fish rising to hatches?

    cheers

    BM

only a few risers that i saw

there where fish there but they where very cautious though

following lures down low from the shadows etc

the wind was pretty bad and there was a lot of wind rippled water surface, I don't know if that puts the fish of.

    will try again

we did OK last year in the summer (sometimes)

    cheers BM

  3. got back from Fish River on Wednsday totally fishless :1badmood:

after the wind decided to turn up it was time to put the fly rod down.

walked up and down the river dodging brown, tiger and red belly snakes :(

over the 5 days up there I must have walked about 15 klms up and down and spotted quite a few trout but nothing seemed to tempt the little dears into a good hit.

I had on 2 occasions 12" rainbow smash a celta and then a little gold HB so hard that they came about a foot out of the water putting on an impressive show but unhooked then selfs. and then on wednsday morrning about 7. am I spotted a 14" brown in about 8" of water about 12 feet away just hanging in a sun patch :1yikes: I carefully got my dry red tag fly with brown nymph dropper and managed to get it about 10" in front of his nose and I know he saw it. I slowley stripped the nymph back at about an inch at a time and watched as the brown started to follow, surley this is going to be my first ever trout on fly. He was getting closer to the nymph making little lunges at it when I stripped it and the let it stop, then disaster, :1badmood: the nymph picks up a submerged stick and locks on. the fish is so close now he can see me as well. I slowley pull the stick in and he takes off into the deeper water in front of me. I free the nymph from the stick and look around to see the little bugger back down in the same spot in the sun. same as before he spots the nymph as it drops in front of him, i start the strips again only this time he is a little more cautious but follows all the way till i can't strip any more line then he cruises of into the deep water again. I'm waiting for him to turn up in his same spot but this doesn't happen because as I focuss in the shallow water right in front of me I see the little bugger at my feet just about a foot away and I swear he is looking at me. he so close there is no chance to cast anything the only thing that might have worked would have been a spear. anyway then the bloody wind starts again so I bid him fairwell as I head off back to camp.

I have to catch one sooner or later but these little bugger are hard work.

no one seem to be geeting much on the long weekend that I spoke to.

    might have been the wind.

    cheers

  4. Hi Raiders,

After Stewy's good reports i dusted off the Bass gear for another season :biggrin2:

Headed down to my fav small stream to see if the Bass had returned from their winter business :074:

Woke up early this morning and casted into this pool (an old fav)

    post-2475-1189505301_thumb.jpg

After a short time a typical aggressive Bass smashed my scorpion, the first Bass for the season

    post-2475-1189505277_thumb.jpg

A nice silverly look to her

Well that was enough to fire me up for an arvo session further afield.

I slogged though the thick bush and when i finally hit the water this is what greeted me

    post-2475-1189505368_thumb.jpg

Very pretty but no takers in this pool

Then as i made my way upstream i came across a pool that was crawling with Bass

First cast in and my lure is hammered and a strong fight ends with a good Bass 30+cm ready for release.

I release him downstream so as not to spook the pool and next five casts = five quality Bass all better than 30cm :yahoo:

Surely this can't go on but it just gets better the next pool yields my new PB at 35cm

    here he is

    post-2475-1189505389_thumb.jpg

Then the Bass just go balistic!! it seems every cast equals a solid hit

Whilst fighting one fish i notice a much larger fish chasing it around, so after i release the first i toss out a surface lure downstream and SMACK it is inhaled by a monster that pulls drag like no other :yahoo:

Eventualy I cradle he out of the water and take a few snaps of my new PB at 36cm here she is

    post-2475-1189505403_thumb.jpg

Pretty soon it is dark and i have to go but as i walk past each pool i see Bass rising

I lost count but in two hours i would say 15 fish would have been caught and released

The most awesome Bass session in my life :yahoo:

    BM

Can you show some pics of the lures you are using

I wont to give that area you metioned a go when I get back from the trouting holiday

    cheers BM

  5. the tiny snaps I use for flatties bream whiting trout etc are size 000 you can get them from a place that start with the letter A and has the same name as a snake

they hold good size fish 48 cm bream 50 cm brown t both putting up great fights the brother caught a good size trev on one as well

the only issue I have is they as pretty hard to see and you will need long nose pliers to work them some times

from what I have seen they don't mess up the action and I have caught heeps using them

great to go from SP to HB's and back again

    cheers

what about around LCR near deburghs bridge, anything around there?

Hey BM you going up to Tarana for the season opening weekend.

I still can't forget that 50cm brown I got where you suggested.

    cheers

  7. has anybody had anything to do with thes JW watersnake units

    are they any good

any reports would be good as I am thinking of picking one up.

I have a 4.3m clack withy a 40 hp on the back the unit I was thinking about was a bow mount 44LB

    cheers

  8. Hi Raiders,

After struggling though winter with low catch rates and not a single Bream from my local stream things are turning around!. Last weekend the flatties returned and nailed four little ones before I scored a prize Bass(35cm) from the Salt

So when i arrived on Sat morning I was once again feeling confident of some action.

Despite the ultra low tide when it started rushing in the fish quickly got on the job, and once again the squidgy bug took this quality Bream :biggrin2:

    post-2475-1188693533_thumb.jpg

A good size for this water at 32cm and fought very well, although after release he needed some resus which is unusual for Bream

    Bring on Spring :yahoo:

    BM

I actually caught a couple of fish yesterday myself, after having half a dozen attemps through winter it was great to feel the braid getting taught and the sp's getting smashed.

    come on summer. :1fishing1::beersmile:

  9. Just spent a very wet day at Lyell, in fact I think I spent more time sitting in the car listening the rain come down than actually fishing! Hit Farmers Creek arm first up and lost a solid Rainbow at my feet (damned net wouldnt clip off my belt and I ended up with some slack in the line, grrrr). There was a few fish rising out here early but it went quiet. Tried the main camping ground but didn't see anything moving but I suspect had the weather been a bit better there might have been a few fish around. In the end the rain got the better of me and my planned after dark excursion with the Fly Rod didn't eventuate.

Interestingly Mr Blue Green Algae has made a reappearance, anybody have any idea what triggers it? Doesn't seem to effect the Trout overly.

Chalk up one more Troutless session!

    Cheers

    Windy

    Hey Matt,

you seem to get up the mountains a fair bit to, are you a local?

when you dropped the rainbow what where you using.

  10. Fished a lot of that stream. What area are you interested in - above or below Oberon dam? When are you planning to fish it?

I have been fishing the F R for a few seasons and would like to know some more spots to try.

we normally camp at the reserve at Flat Rock and walk up and down there and over at the Duck, the Junction and Phills falls, any other spots that you can recommend.

    cheers

  11. Sorry Nargse 1 was me you ran into, should have introduced myself. Total blank for me at Lake Wallace on sunday, according to the weather sunday was meant to be the pick of days on the weekend but in hindsight I should have made the effort to get there on saturday :1badmood: . Did you guys end up with anything? After leaving Wallace I went to Lake Lyell, farmers creek arm, plenty of fishos around but no one having any luck. Might stick to wentworth falls lake for the moment until some consistent reports start coming in from other fishos cheers troutboy :1fishing1:

    Hey Trout boy

I was wading around in the water near where you had your ute parked, that was nargse 1 walking around in green. :(

we got zip (as usual) we did see a few in the water (spooked). the guys that fished the rock area got a nice rainbow but that was it. :mad3:

we went to TCD it was blowing a gail up there and there were white caps on the waves.

a guy that was leaving there when we arrived had a nice rainbow in his bag but that was it.

went down to fish river to show nargse 1 where the action happens in the open season

dropped in at the wentworth falls lake for a look on the way home looks pretty small

    does it fish any good?

  12. Just like you, mostly wooly buggers, some with a bead head some without. I have had takes on small black and brown bead head nymphs but I am still only learning with the fly rod and have struck too late missing the fish. Mind you the takes are rather savage so I suspect are coming from good size fish. Hopefully we get some nice weather this weekend and the wind stays down and we should have a good day. Looking forward to meeting some fellow raiders cheers troutboy :1fishing1:

yeh same here just learning the art myself, haven't bagged a trout on fly yet :mad3: but have scored a few on tassies, rapallas and little sp's

very keen to get the first

see how we go on Sunday if we get up there we will try LW first at sun up and then move to TCD at around 9.am

where do think the good spots are at TCD I have walked all around it and the only places i have had hits has been off the wall, and that is a no go spot

there dosen't seem to have much structure to fish around or any noticable weed beds

    any offerings?

    cheers

  13. The best lures of late(for me anyway) has been a rapala 40mm jointed shad rap in rainbow trout pattern, have also done well with sx 40 in any colour but in particular with reds and oranges. There are plenty of small to medium sized bass in the lake which pull pretty hard, have caught them using a small 2 inch plastic attached to a gold coloured betts spinner and also on tassie devils. I am not a local of lithgow area but spend a fair bit of time at Lake Wallace and Lake Lyell thommos etc. I live in Katoomba so I mostly stick pretty close to home which for me is Wentworth Falls Lake. I will be fishing Lake Wallace on saturday morning and lake Lyell saturday afternoon may see you there. I drive a wb holden ute(white) cheers troutboy :1fishing1:

    Hey troutboy

    going up sunday morn

will catch you up there one day soon

what flies do you use when flying wallace there must be some good fish hanging around all those weed areas

    cheers

  14. yes dear just sneak out early and ill pick u up for the stealth get away from the sleeping :wife: .

Gotta be a whole lot better then our efforts tonite wading around flicking at a river thats empty at the moment :1prop::wacko:

you gotta stop being worried about sharks :( and high tides and keep on fishing :1fishing1:

  15. Hi guys, most of my fishing at wallace is done off a small rocky outcrop close to the baseball park. You come in at the main entrance and directly in front of you is a dog off leash area, take the road that forks off too the right parralel to the off leash area and drive about 200m until you come to a left hand bend. Just in front of you there is a small rock ledge that falls off into fairly deep water. You will mainly catch rainbows here but you will get the odd brown as well. good luck cheers troutboy :1fishing1:

    Thanks for the info boys

might make the drive up on Sunday if the :wife: is cool with it.

might meet one of you blokes up there

what flies do you use up there, i always go for the woolly buggers but maybe a nymph might be more useful

    cheers guys

  16. Wentworth Falls Lake is funnily enough in Wentworth Falls. Heading from sydney turn right at the traffic lights at Wentworth Falls and drive through the town centre , over a small railway overpass and take your first left hand turn, follow this road( sinclair crescent) for about 400m and the lake is on your right. You can park in the carpark and fish from the bank in front ,but the best fishing is on the opposite side, just walk over the dam wall and there is a pathway that will take you to the other side. good luck cheers troutboy. :1fishing1:

    thanks for the info

    might give it a go

are you a local at Lake W and TCD?

what area at LW do you find best

I have been up there a few times no and seen next to nothing

    cheers

  17. Hi guys, fished Lake Wallace on saturday morning for nil result, plenty of fish rising before sun up but with the low light levels it was very hard to see what they were rising too. Wind picked up around 7.30am , so I changed from fly to spinning some lures for no result. Left Wallace around 10.00am and headed to Lake Lyell to see what was happening, water levels are up but so was the wind so I decided to call it a day. Sunday morning I headed to my local , Wentworth Falls Lake to spin some lures and within ten minutes of arriving I had a nice 2 1/2 lbs brown trout come to hand. Many large browns were seen swimming around the perimeter of the lake looking for feeder creeks to spawn in, but because there are no inflowing creeks they are just doing laps of the shallows. cheers troutboy :1fishing1:

Hey troutboy you must live up that way seems you are fishing around there all the time.

    where is Wentworth falls lake

I have read about it but never considered it.

if i don't break this drought soon i might have to start fixing the house up.

had a casting coarse on Sat in the wind (what a laugh that was) but still keen to fill in the time before the Oct weekend and the when the rivers open again

    cheers

  18. I just got back from a fruitless session at Lyell. Saw all of 2 fish all day, neither were particularly interested in anything. I did not see anything caught and all the boats looked as though they doughnutted too! I did hear that a 4kg Brown got caught yesterday.

Water is up at about 58% and with a bit of luck it will stay up this high and I see that TCD is coming back up (21%), my bet is water is being pumped from Lyell into TCD.

    Cheers

    Windy

seems like the fishing is quiet all over

can't wait for the rivers to open

  19. hi all,

went out to juno point today. a full solid 8hours in the same spot with the hope of something big...........

    ...........nothing to brag about :mad3:

plenty of tailor round when burleying and some yellow tail.

bait used... frozen squid, frozen and live yellow tail, frozen bull mullet fillets, prawns, steak pieces too...

threw a few plastics round also and they actually caught the only ok fish.... heaps of tailor, one 28cm bream, one 50ish cm flattie, 2 small whiting, one wierd ass looking crab, one rock cod of some kind.

    any advice on juno point?

Hey nargse1 you should be used to it by now

think about all the cold fishless night we have had of late.

I reckon it's time to fix the house up and wait till the weather warms up.

I might go for a quick session down the bridge after work, just happen to have all the gear in the boot.

    give us a buzz.
