  1. hi raiders, Headed to whale beach headland this morning to hunt some drummer. Haven't fish for 4 weeks!!!! As my usual drummer is in repair i took a light 5 kg stick with my usual Abu 6600C4 loaded with 10lb mono with Ab gut and king prawns as bait. Got there around 10 am, so was fishing the going out tide. The fish was not biting at my usual spot, so as the sea was calm today i decided to check new spots. 5m away i gave it a try bet 2 bommies and i was on. I was catching drummer after drummer. The drummer were on fire approx 2-3 hrs after high tide. Caught at least 12 and released 10 as they were undersized but kept 2 and a rock cod. Caught a nice one, 40 cm and fat. Took my a hard 2 mins fight as i was fishing light. The first 15 sec were crucial as the fat pig was trying to bury his head under the rock ledge. Peeled prawns worked better today. I was not expecting a good catch today as the sea was too flat with no wash. The water was so clear that i could see the drummer eating my bait. Also i was using No 4 bait keeper hooks. Some might think its too small, but worked for me. Trying to attached photo but not sure it will work. Cross fingers cheers bertrand

  5. hi raiders, i bought a copy of that fishing book ' The Complete Fisherman's Guide to Sydney's Top Fishing Spots' which I value as a fishing bible for the well detailed fishing spots - how to get there, what fish u can target etc. I bought it 5 yrs ago and i haven't seen any other copy around. The author is James Cameron and published by Modern Fishing Publication. Have any of you guys have a copy of it and have u seen any place selling them? Just wondering if they have a newer version cheers bertrand

  11. no worries Ian the spot i fish from is snag free, just sandy bottom long walk though and gets hard when u have a few pounds of fish in the backpack awesome place for light gear fishing, targetting trevs, salmon and tailor but not sure if it will be good fishing there during winter time, best time is autumn cheers bertrand
  12. hi holmesie i reade in a recent fishing mag that winter is good for trevally in Narooma. Looks like a great destination for fishing Have a good time cheers Bertrand
  13. hey wildfish, check the forecast before you go. looks like we'll get 4-5 m swell whatever u decide, be safe i'll probably try beach fishing
  14. mate i know that feeling when you've not been fishing for a while and craving bad for it. mee too i was very disappointed to see the forecast for the weekend. 4m+ swells, forget about any type of rock fishing but may be beach fishing might be good...think about it good report mate cheers bertrand
  15. i just read from a fishing mag that leather jackets suck in your bait, grind it and them spew out your hook. That's gold info for me. It is important then to use light tackle to feel the bite. As soon as you feel that grinding bite, strike hard to hook the leather jacket before it spew out the hook. If you wait too long after feeling the bite, then bye bye bait and fish. Good learning thanks guys
  16. hi raiders, i think this will be my first fishing report! I dropped my parents at the airport this morning after 6 wks holidays. I was sad, so I needed to cheer up. I went to one of my fav rock ledge in the Royal National Park where I normally land salmon, trevally, tailor, breams and the occasional sting ray. Lately, with the colder climate, leather jackets have called home my fav spot. As am no expert in leather jacket fishing, I kept losing rigs after rigs everytime the leatheries are around Got the the ledge around 10 am and nothing happened for hours. I kept losing my pillies with no bites. I said to myself, that must be the work of the leather jackets. After reading and getting advice from fishos, I used a small long shank hook with wire trace rigged with a size 3 star sinker (due to strong sea). I finally got my first leather jackets. Hurrah!! Got 9 in total. They are not the best fighters, but am so happy that i finally learned how to catch them. Better, no more lost of rigs. Will post pics tomorrow My question is, is leather jackets a winter species? In autumn, there were none of them at the same spot and i had fun catching salmon, tailor, trevs etc. Now that they have invaded that spot, there's no sign of other fish, why is that? Shouldn't complain too much though, i love eating leather jackets cheers bertrand

  19. hi macka, i use my capricorn 4500J for surf fishing. Basically I cast 3-4 oz star sinker with ganged hooked pillies targetting salmon, tailor and whoever else interested. The reel doesn't look like a strong reel but once you start reeling you'll change your mind. Don't forget that this reel is designed primarily for jigging, so it has to be strong. To answer your question i use 20 lbs mono and 12 ft shakeunderwatere surf rod (rating 8-12 kg). Very confident to land any decent fish with that set up. HAving said that, 30 lbs braid will be awesome on that reel. Mate, you will like the capricorn. cheers Bertrand
  20. Got one Daiwa Capricorn 4500J What a great reel. Powerful drag (9kg), smooth like butter and cast well money well spent for sure cheers Bertrand
  21. hi raiders i really wished i was there. From the photos i can see you huys were having a go at the salmons. just wanted to know from which beach were the salmons caught? cheers bertrand
