  1. am so grateful to those great explanation on the backbone thing to be honest, i never heard about it before!!! thanks ceph for that great explanation this knowledge is definitely very useful when buying a rod. will try to check all my rods now cheers bertrand
  2. thanks ceph for your input i don't really understand what you mean by "You will have the backbone on the wrong point of the axis". in short, does it mean the rod will a weak spot somewhere? sorry for my ignorance cheers bertrand
  3. i did lost a bit of casting distance, but was not a drama as the fish were close to the ledge. do you think the friction dammage the guides in the long run??
  4. hi raiders, i never thought about it before today's fishing trip. to cut a story short, the mechanical brake knob of my abu 6000 was blocked for unknown reason. the only spare reel i had was a spinning one, so i just use it on my overhead surf beach rod. i had no choice...and my fishing buddy was already catching fish. to be honest, i had no issues with the use of the spinning reel on my overhead. i was able to do decent casts in where i wanted the bait to go. i even catch a 1m gummy shark with no problem but my question is: what problems can u expect when using a spinning on an overhead?? btw, me and my fishing buddy headed to our fav fishing spot in the royal national park at 6am. we were targetting salmon mainly but ended with trevally, tailor, gummy shark and of course salmon. not to mention at least 15 sting rays caught and release. we used mainly pillies on gang hooks. total fish caught was 15 excluding the gummy shark and sting rays. the salmon were average size approx 50 -60 cm and trevs were around 30 cm sorry forgot to take camera. next time for sure cheers bertrand
  5. salmons are really good if you know how to cook them. curry is good but my best is a mauritian/indian style vindaloo cooked with mustard seed, tumeric, garlic and onions cheers bert
  6. hi ikan Mona Vale ledge be dangerous place with moderate to big swells. i normally rely on seabreeze.com.au. If the swell is more than 2m with 10 knots wind, i would rather stay home and watch tv. Safer to fish the out going tide as a general rule but i've seen bigger swells at low tide c/t high tide at same spot same day. have you fish mona vale before? if not, go with a local. its a very good ledge to catch drummer and gropper. But careful - its a NO BAIT GATHERING AREA cheers bertrand
  7. man and their toys!!!! i do understand how u feel mate. its always an awesome feeling when u put your hand on quality stuff, esp fishing gears as we are all fishos i've seen a couple of Tony's customed made rods and very impressive indeed. am saving my $$ for my first customed made rod. hope its gonna be soon so is the kilwell FSU 6144 full graphite or a composite? what's the rated line strength? enjoy your new rod and bring us some pics of your catches bertrand
  8. well said stewy we can't give you advice unless you asked what type of fishing you gonna do what type of tackle do you have? there's great rock fishing at mona vale, whale beach and any headlands around there however, if you are not experienced with rock fishing you better go with a local as rock fishing is very dangerous, even for experienced anglers i normally catch drummer, trevally and breams at mona vale and whale beach i use a 12 ft rod matched with a round baitcaster with min 20 lbs mono. i normally use a float and my best bait is ab gut although peeled king prawns will do the job i've been catching plenty of salmon at Burning Palm (Royal National PArk) with pilchard on gang hooks plenty of options out there cheers Bertrand
  9. awesome king mate caught any other fish?
  10. hi chriso any photos of your catches and of the island? i checked LHI homepage.....very impressive can't wait to put my feet there cheers bertrand
  11. I'm in. Let's keep the ball rolling cheers Bertrand
  12. thanks guys for your feedbacks the only reason i'm looking for second best is as you all confirmed....there is no second best red crabs remain the top bait having said that...this is the main reason red crabs are getting less and less is we can find a second best (if any), then we could give red crabs a chance to increase in population anyway, that's just a reflection cheers bertrand
  13. anyone fear the dangerous blue ring octopus when catching the red crabs? haven't seen any on sydney's rock ledges so far. are they common to sydney rocks?
  14. Abalone guts??? i used them for drummer. i guess you use the whole gut as bait for groper. dont hold very well though with a strong cast??? cheers bertrand
  15. hi raiders, anybody fish with that rod? any feedback? cheers bertrand
  16. hi raiders, i know everybody agree red crabs found on rock ledges are the top bait for groper. what will be the second best bait? cheers bertrand

  19. thanks michael. yeah i heard there's excellent drummer holes at st michael's cave hope the guy was able to land his drummer
  20. hey frantic i think i got the slightly newer version and i paid $10 new 5 yrs ago. haven't seen any copy around. scotty, i think the best way to start the rocks is ti hire guys like alex belissimo who runs classes on beach and rock fishing. any fishraider runs beach and rock fishing classes??? where's that fantastic drummer spot henry???
  21. the book is called 'the complete fisherman's guide to SYdney's Top Fishing spots written by james cameron. i have quite an old edition bought 5 yrs ago. since then i've never seen any copy around. out of print?? dunno hey scotty, u seem not to have much experience in rock fishing. let me tell u the 2 realities: 1st its a great way to catch a mixed bag of fish from bream to salmon, drummer to kingies etc and 2nd, its the most dangerous sport in the country. so watch out. never fish alone and never adventure to a spot without observing for at least 1/2 hr or even more. the best way is to grab a local who fish the region. when i first start fishing in sydney i caught nothing for 3 yrs!!! yep that's the truth. but since a local took me fishing and taught me the abc of rock fishing, i can say now i never came home without a fish. the royal national park is a great location. garie beach is top for salmons and my beast spot is burning palms...but its such a long walk...esp on the way back uphill if u caught a couple of salmon good luck
  22. hey kingfisher thanks for the info. i might bump into you at terrigal
  23. hi raiders, i've been reading some great stuff about these south african made blanks for surf casting. anybody heard about them? cheers Bertrand
