Ah it has already been said, relax when yaking even when it is tough, if it really is nasty you can always land somewhere else and go pick the car up. Sometimes it is just a mind game. Next time try the skinny water up one of the rivers or somewhere like Narrabeen Lake, much more civil and you can get used to the yak. Open water is a lot less forgiving, and the boat traffic around the main harbour always makes it a more stressful outing.

Yes I have seen reds to 8kg from North Head washes but it is not a reliable spot for them. Whenever I am around there I will give it a flick just in case, especially when the swell is up. David

Hi Stan, I was in a Hobie Revolution SOT with the peddals. Very stable and the hands free trolling and fishing is great. A very good all round yak. I also have a Dagger Drift II that is a double SIK, it is good for fishing with one of the girls and very stable. David

Have been a big wuzz and stayed off the water for a few weeks, Greag can have those wet and windy nights all to him self. There was a solid swell running this morning with 10kn SW thown in for fun. Plenty of back wash and chop around Quarantine and Old Mans Hat, it was a little more settled off the front of the head for a change, guaranteed very wet arse in the yak this morning. Was casting into washes for reds off the front before sun up, but the reds did not want to play and there was a limit to how close to the rocks I dared get. I heard that a few salmnon had been caught early off bluefish so I made the trek north only to see the last boat heading off as I got there and no sign of any salmon. While rounding the point of North Head on the way home with a donut looking likely I hooked up to a bonnie of 43cm, which after a piccy was released. Yippee i was at least on the board. Headed into Quarantine and had a flick for squid but they did not want to play. Decided to put a trolling lure out for the short jaunt back to Little Manly and immediately caught a 43cm chopper, that also swam off after a quick mug shot. That was it, water is cooling off especially inside the harbour. The small metal lure I had rigged on the 6lb flick stick never saw a cast, there was just zip on the surface for me today. Great exercise, about 15km all up. David

Good going as always Mark. I fished Dobroyd on Friday for a big frigate on a SP and a possible hit from a rat, otherwise the surface action was pretty sporadic. Got a nice red off Narrabeen inthe yak on Saturday. See you out there again soon. Yeah I miss the Q bouy as well, it was close to home. The kings are around just having a quiet spell, expect another burst soon. David

Still heaps of bait in the harbour, saw beakies, pilchards and masses of yakkas yesterday. Maybe the pelagics are having a couple of days break. David

Well done Mike, jews seem to like stormy conditions for some reason, well done for getting out there. I have also found live yakkas to be passed up in favour of other offering however i am sure they do a good job of attracting a jewies attention as it stalks around. Caught this off longy this morning, was around 50cm. Seems like it is a Mosaic Leather Jacket, can anyone confirm as I have not caught one before. David

If they were swimming mid water then i think cuttle or squid is a reasonable call, if they were on the bottom them sea slug is more likely as they let out a red dye when poked. david

Hi Mushtaka, Very nice first king out of a yak, you will make the rest of the kayak frat very jealous. Nice to see some volume of kings showing up at last. All yakers who fish offshore have stories of things that go 'bump in the night' up against the yak. Big sharks are not common but when they do show up they seem fascinated by yaks and there is very little between you and the yak. And yes Steve WAS bumped by the GWS at longy that is why he ended up in the water. It is a natural health hazzard while chasing big schools of fish. I use a shark shield as does a lot of the regular crew (google shark shield for details) either putting the antenna down the scupper, attaching it to a rod holder or PFD, just be sure to tether it as they are expensive kit to loose. The yak community jury is still out on whether they will work in all circumstances, but they certainly do work and for me some thing is better than nothing. I also use it in the harbour as the Bull Sharks have been known to hassle yaks as well. When you have blood and guts leaking down the skuppers you are just a bloody great burley cage to a bitey. I am pretty sure the SS would deter a 'curiosity' bite, not so sure if it would work if it is in full on predator mode. Half the people who survive shark attacks never see the shark comming and many never see it at all. I would bet that of the fatilities the percentage who never saw the shark coming was a lot higher. I am always happy when a bitey shows itself. David
