  1. This weekend seems a bit busy so I'm going to try and get out Thursday evening from middle harbour. I'll probably go around contarf and Balmoral (see if I can recatch your good flathead!) or if the conditions are good, over near the quarantine station. Good luck on the weekend.
  2. There's a few beaches like Quarantine Beach and Store Beach (near Manly) that have a no anchoring zone near the beach at certain times of the year. But they are clearly marked with yellow buoys. Have fun in your new boat!
  3. The National Parks website has been updated to say it's now closed until the 5th November.
  4. Scratchie, Is the elastic band so it will break and drop the sinker when you've got a fish on? Do you put it on with a running clip or just tie the band straight onto the line? Thanks.
  5. Thanks for letting us know. I was planning to head down there over the weekend.
  6. Hi Tackleberry. That shouldn't be a problem. Your hull should be grounded, but that doesn't mean that current returning to the battery is going via the hull. There should be a return wire to do that. Problems occur when there isn't a return wire, it's broken or has a poor connection. What you measured was the potential between the positive and the hull in a path that doesn't usually occur. But I'm just a hack, so check with your mechanic next service. Cheers.
  7. Well the trip south was a lot of fun but not too many fish. Caught a 41cm trevally and a good sized whiting in St Georges Basin which gave us a good meal. Spoke to a local who said the fish were still very quiet for this time of the year. Got onto quite a few wrasse in Jervis Bay which were all let go. Cheers.
  8. Hi Raiders, Well I've been on Fishraider since Christmas and never got around to introducing myself. Sorry! This is a great forum and its given me plenty of new ideas and things to try. Even had a couple of nights out chasing Hairtail which was a fish I hadn't even heard of before. I live on the northern beaches of Sydney and have a Quintrex 430 fishabout. It's my first boat (Christmas present) and its been used almost weekly. Mainly in Sydney Harbour, Pittwater and the Hawkesbury. Haven't caught too many, but its been fun getting out there and a great way to spend time with the kids. I'm off to Jervis Bay and St Georges Basin next week with Dad and the boys for a week of fishing. Spent plenty of time there before but never with a boat so I've been searching through the old posts. I really appreciate how folk will share techniques, places and tips. I'll let you know how we go! Cheers.
  9. I had heard they were getting rid of the Junior boat licence. With an 11 year old soon to turn 12 I was expecting a war to break out with his older brother who already has one! Thanks for the links. I read up and 12 year olds now just get a regular licence but have age restrictions.
  10. Thanks for the replies and ideas. Spoke with my mechanic and agree that it might be a relay but since its only happenned once I'm going to leave it for now and see. Its only a 50hp so I can use the release screw and lift by hand if I do get stuck. I'll have a look at those sensor wires too.
  11. I came across this drone footage of the rockfall on youtube. That's a lot of rock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3aq_ptCgV4
  12. Thanks Pete for the tip on the relief screw. I don't want to be towed home!
  13. Hi, I was out this morning and trimmed up when coming in to the beach at Clontarf. I stopped a bit short so went to trim down - nothing. Tried with the button on the throttle (up front) as well as the button on the side of the motor. However, it would trim up! So after dropping off on the beach, I've now got the motor fully trimmed up but its not going down. I spent a few minutes thinking about what to do next, but before doing anything gave it another try. Now it's decided to work! No problems again for the rest of the day. It's only six months old (Suzuki 50hp) and never had any problems . Anyone had anything similar? I was even wondering if it was a "feature" and maybe I had bumped the bottom? Cheers, Brett.
  14. Hi Craig, I keep forgetting to take a separate SD card with me. Next time I'm out I'll log some data and send you files.
  15. So I rang Navionics. They said definitely not to write to the same card, but rather pull it out and then download to a separate card.
  16. Hi. My sounder manual says that I can download GPS and sounding data that I've been tracking over to a microSD card. I've been checking out the depths around my favourite spots and I've also been playing around with QGIS (free GIS software) at home, so I want to give this a go. The sounder is a Lowrance Elite-4. I've got a Navionics SD card in the slot. Has anyone tried writing extra data to their Navionics card, or do I need to pull that one out and write to a different card? Thanks!
  17. I bought the same bracket this afternoon Mullatt. I figured since I didn't catch any fish this morning, I should spend more money on the boat!
  18. Haynze, I've got the same motor and I used to do the same - towing with the locks down cause that's what Dad always did with his boat. But in the manual it states very clearly that the locks should never be used while towing. Like kingfishbig said, with some makes such as Suzuki the lock isn't strong enough. So now I've just been towing mine as low down as possible, but I'm going to pick up a motor support for any long trips.
  19. We were on the outer edge of Waratah Bay. Had probably three or four times over the evening when they were around biting (and getting away), but the rest of the night was very quiet. We packed up about 11:30. You should add your Hairtail to your PB's list!
  20. Last night there were some under the boat, a couple beside the boat but alas none in the boat!
  21. Any consideration of an application to the Recreational Fishing Trust? I don't know if its directly applicable, but I use this forum for learning more about fishing and all of the posts promote responsible fishing, so perhaps it meets the criteria of "recreational fishing education - fishing workshops, Fishcare volunteers, schools education, fishing advisory".
  22. Thanks flattie and blackfish! Very much appreciated. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  23. Hi All, I was wondering if anyone can help identify what this fish was. Caught it this morning near middle head . Thanks.
  24. No keepers today, but thought others might be interested in what the lower Hawkesbury was like on Friday before the long weekend. I put the boat in at Akuna Bay about 8:30 this morning and picked up Dad off the train at Brooklyn. The water in Cowan Creek and up at Brooklyn is still quite murky, so headed down towards the mouth. After coffee, the first line in the water was about 10 down around Juno Point. It's was quite deceptive because the surface freshwater was moving slowly seaward but deeper was still racing in. We only had medium to light gear and the wind started getting up from the north, so we tucked in behind the point at the sport and rec camp. Got several flathead that were just below legal so they all went back. Next stop was just east of Patonga where much of the same. The water down here was looking much clearer. Headed over to flint and steel just before high tide where a few boats were setting up. Tried for a while but no luck. Probably could have waited until the run in finished, but I had a new light weight rod all rigged up, so headed up to the back of Jerusalem Bay. Quite murky up there - on the flats the sounder said we were in 1.5m but could have been in 100 for all you could see. Anyway it was a good chance to try out my new rod. I expected to get at least one flathead near the drop into deeper water, but instead several undersized whiting. Dropped Dad back to the train then zipped back round to Akuna Bay just before dark. Anyway, it was cracking good weather and a great day out with Dad, even if it is meat pies for dinner tonight! Good luck to everyone over the long weekend. Cheers, Brett.
  25. Hi. The boys and I had a few good bites on the point due west of the spit bridge (near the sailing club) last weekend. There were a few squid trying to chase the bait on the way up so a squid jig might keep the kids interested. Also a couple of undersized bream just east of Clontarf where it goes from deep to shallow. Good luck! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
