  1. Hi guys, gonna try the back to basics live bait technique. I've heard of yakkas being caught right at Roseville boat ramp - is this correct? @Pickles you come to mind!

If so, where abouts? Knowing yakkas like structure, I certainly don't want to get in the way of launching boats at the ramp, so do I just try to get amongst the closest moorings (you pass them as you head out from the ramp)?

Having tried the Balmoral island a few times to no luck, I automatically default to a kingie donut! Any tips on location appreciated!

(Will be berleying hard with chicken pellets soaked in tuna oil in a berley cage hanging off the side, using handlines with 6lb/tiny hook/split shot sinker on pilchard and squid bait )

Navionics is your friend. Work the shoals, jig aggressively and persist until you find them. Once you do repeat the drift and you should do well. Good luck.

thanks! what do you look for on the sounder (weed? and what depth do you targert).

do you put a sinker on the jigs to get them down there quicker?

  3. What a fantastic haul! What's your technique, if you don't mind sharing? I often driven by Dover heights and pondered squidding but not sure - looks dicey getting close to rocks, controlling speed to get jigs deep enough etc...

  4. Another thing you can try is "bait elastic" - it's a stretchy line that you wind over your bait whilst rigged - keeps the bait on the hook longer.

I use this for long distance yabbie casting 😆.

I have 24 volt Minkota and spot lock- carry an anchor, but haven’t used one in 5 years. The Minkota has revolutionised my fishing - expensive, but worth every penny.

Thanks pickles, really appreciate the advice. I've considered a trolling motor but very expensive (would need a mount fabricated and fitted) - looking at  short of $4k for parts and labour!

The spot is Trag grounds off coggee - go get em Raiders, God made a big ocean for us all to enjoy.

Happy to share - “ He who waters, will himself be watered and a generous soul prospers”. Proverbs 11:25

Thanks for sharing, Pickles! I'm gonna give it ago, weather permitting, this Sunday. Reckon yakkas will do the trick? What depth were you dropping them and what rod setup? (Classic 50lb braid setup or 30lb?)

Thanks pickles and awesome effort on that number of kings!

I don't know a store that has a no return policy?

    It's against Austrailian consumer law!

The rod you bought would be classed as a medium, sure you could catch rat to hoodlem kingfish with it but it would probably also be a good open water snapper rod to.

Anyway it might not be what you wanted right now but unless you intend to just catch bream all your life you will use the rod eventually.

Ask any dedicated fisho how many rods they own & if they say 4 or 5 they are lying 😁

    I thing I am at about 20 + now but I don't have a problem 😅 🤫

I have well eclipsed 50, might be over 70. I've since stopped...for now

I have noticed “jelly” prawns around in huge numbers just before this current spate of rain.

if Raiders are waiting for the prawns to be running (Whiting, bream kingfish etc), they have started. I scooped up several hundred in three or four sweeps of the net just before first light at the boat ramp each time I have launched in the past month - only small, but they’ve started.

At the boat ramp? That sounds like my kind of bait collection! Where do you scoop?

  9. Hi guys, i have an aluminium boat (Stabicraft) thats is almost 2 years old. Ive noticed what i can only describe as salt "stains" on the inside (ill upload a photo when i can) through out the inside - almost like bits of salt spray or small splashes that i likely failed to wipe of along time ago. BTW, my cleaning regime does not involves spray everything inside as i have lots of gear in the various storage areas, in case the question is asked. I instead wipe down the surface areas.

Im wondering how you all deal with this - id like to spend some time to get rid of it before it gets worse. I was thinking maybe sanding and then polishing with aluminum polish, then some sort of thing protecting coating (wipe down with INOX lanolin?)

    cheers!
