  1. Thanks @big Neil for the time out on the lake. I enjoyed it immensely, I only wish we had more time on the water. Alas, that bloody four letter word ruining things yet again!

It was great to chat with such an experienced angler and despite being a Man(ure) United supporter, you turned out to be a great bloke too 😂

For the other Raiders, it needs to be mentioned that, Neil being the modest bloke he is, didn't mention that he drove near an hour.. 40kms..boat in tow.. just to get me on to my first freshwater fish. A gem of a man and a fine representative of the generous spirit and camaraderie of this forum.

Aaaaand he left me with gifts of his own hand made pottery to take home with me!

Hopefully we can catch up when you're in Sydney. I'll be sure to be in full Liverpool kit 😁

Hot opportunity here @Chhayzor! @big Neil is a much-loved gentleman of Fishraider and even if no baits are soaked or lures are cast, would be well worth catching up with. He also knows his way around all his freshwater species.

    Hopefully you're around then!

    Chomping at the bit @Little_Flatty

Hopefully a successful report, come Sunday arvo 😁

Okay just spotted your post after I replied to your response to my post (Murrumbidgee unfishable). Lake Wyangan is right on the outskirts of Griffith and is a great place to fish. There are Cod, Yellowbelly, Carp in there. As you will be fishing from the shore your best option is earthworms. Suspended from a paternoster rig on a 1/0 hook, you could catch any of the above. Any gear will do just have about 10 -15 lb line where the hook is. Bread and sweet corn are great baits for Carp also.

Will you be there (Griffith) on Sunday? If you are I am free and could catch up to have a fish at Lake Wyangan. Phone me on 0466853633. bn

An opportunity to spend some time with big Neil? I'm down!

Any of those species would be a first for me, so I'm eager 😁 luckily, I have a reel in the car spooled with some 10lb.

I'm on my way at the moment. Left a bit later than I had wanted so I'm now aiming to arrive mid arvo today.

I should have some time tomorrow morning as I won't need to be working until about Noon.

Thank you for the offer. I've just sent you a text.

    Chat soon 👍

I went for a drive to the river this morning and got the surprise of my life. The river is about 2m deeper than last week, chocolate coloured, and running 100 miles an hour. A quick check of the dam levels showed the reason. Blowering at 94.9% and Burrinjuck at 93.4%. State water must be expecting a deluge in the catchment areas for the two supply dams and have released thousands of megalitres. This water will end up going out to sea South of Adelaide. So no fishing in the river again, even though we have had no serious rain for ages...unlike the rest of the State. Looks like a spot of Carp fishing in the channel is in order.

How much can a Koala bear?   bn, signing off...

@big Neil sorry, I'm probably responsible.

The fishing gods must've known I'd be in the area very soon. Just my luck.

  5. Thanks @motiondave

I'll see grab some worms from a local tackle store and ask for some advice on the rest.

Thanks @yella king. I have A couple blades. Will give them a try. Never head of the other lures you've mentioned. I'll see what I can find when I get there.

Cheers fellas. Really appreciate the help 🤙

  6. G'day Raiders,

I'm heading down to Griffith over the weekend for work. Hoping to have some spare time while I'm there to have a flick.

Wondering if anybody can point me in the general direction of any bodies of water I can fish? Lake Wyangan is all I can seem to find on maps. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as I've never been down that way. Also never been much of a Freshwater fisho either.

    Thanks in advance,

    Chhay

River still on the rise, house still safe and dry. No more rain please, we have had enough.

    Tell me about it 😩

Maybe we should all do a collective whatever-the-opposite-of-rain-dance-is dance? I'll try anything at this stage

Good to hear you're safe and dry. Hopefully it stays that way 👍

@Chhayzor they look awesome, been looking at the base Infeet models atm. So many options currently to choose from

They're a pleasure to fish. Especially when paired with a light reel. I've got mine paired with a 2000 Daiwa Gekkabijin and that sits at just over 200 grams.

And yes, the amount of choice in super light gear is dizzying! Hard to separate the quality from the marketing.

We saw a lot of baby pillies or mullets near the shore (at least I think they were) but not sure about what they were feeding on since the bust ups were between 5m to 10m away.

Will add to that, I did see small Gars in numbers along the shoreline too.

  10. I'd like to throw in the Daiwa Infeet Z. 1-4kg, from memory 7'2" or 7'3".

I have the model below and absutely love it. Handles Bream and Flatties well and is light as a feather.

However, I'd suggest taking the TD Black reel and chucking it on to check the balance.

I feel the reel may be a touch heavy for that rod.

Mullet will generally be jumping clear of the water or swirling gently on the surface.

Tailor, Kings or any other pelagics on the surface will be 'swooshing' on the surface as they chase bait. Often this will be associated with the presence of birds.

I have a theory that when you can see bream, they can see you too and are unlikely to take a bait or lure presented to them. However it's a different story a bit further out, when you are out of sight.

Thanks for the insight on the Mullet/pelagics.

Yeah, I figured the Bream were sitting there watching me and thinking 'come on mate, try a bit harder 🙄. We're not that silly'

Maybe salmon. Probably not, to be honest. Most likely tailor. Were you getting little rat-ta-tat-tat bites as the lure sank? That would give them away.

I get them on my usual bream gear when they are around. So long as your lure is sized for what they are eating, they will likely eat it if it is presented close enough to the bust up.

This was the post (I was sooooo young back then!):

I was thinking Mullet or Tailor, but I've fished there before in daylight and never seen Tailor around.

Sambos.. so much fun on light gear. Love the photo.

Hey well done guys, good effort! It’s a great spot, I was there an hour or so before you arrived but there was a lot of lightning in the distance approaching Sydney and I spooked off home. Did it not arrive there?

That entire stretch fishes great on a rising tide and particularly the creek entrance at the bridge as the tide comes over a large stretch of intertidal mudflat where the the bream will come in for crabs. Plenty of prawns about also right now.

The jumping fish were almost certainly mullet, the area is packed with them and I witnessed a big mullet spawn event there in mid January. I have though a school of salmon come in during the day and they also ignored all the lures I threw too, but that bay has tons of mullet throughout.

Well done on getting out in the brief weather break and congrats on the bream.

Shame we missed you, Mike. We were around the corner towards the Vic Rd bridge while you were there.

No, thankfully the lightning didn't make it's way there. Oddly enough, when we got there the rain completely subsided.

I've seen Kings cruising through during the day. Plenty of Bream up close too, but uninterested in any lures. Frustrating.

It was a pleasure to witness @Chhayzorpopping his virgin cherry!

I went back there to try to prove I can catch something there today, and I ended up with 3 flatties all above 35cm. Now, back to trying to catch those fish that were busting - I am still adamant they were not mullets.

    Hahah. Great fun, Phil.

I've got something lined up for our next session, too 😁

Good job @Obsessed Fisherman and @Chhayzor!

I have seen schools of salmon and kings up that way, and have actually caught the odd salmon there. I think I have an example in one of my very old reports, when I was fishing that area a lot.

If the fish were genuinely busting up, my bet would have been smallish chopper tailor. They have been the bane of my existence of late, in all the spots I fish (including Iron Cove).

    So they were Salmon!

Will have a trawl through your posts.

Any tips on targeting them? Particularly at night? We threw everything we had at them but no interest.

Great to see the fish down there are doing ok ! Fantastic to see you got some great fish !

    Thanks 😊.

We were sceptical with all the rain dirtying up the water.

  14. Good evening Raiders,

Just wanted to share a session @Obsessed Fisherman and myself had at Lilyfield last night. I've never had any luck night time lure fishing but Phil assured me success was possible, so I thought 'why not?'

We met at the first spot at 10PM and were entertained by nothing but conversation and Mullet showing off their aerial abilities. Once the rain settled in, we decided to move around the corner and try our luck there.

Second spot was quiet to begin with and again we were met with the acrobatic showings of Mullet all over. Phil thought they might have been another species, so while I was trying to catch my first night fish on a lure, Phil was desperately trying to catch whatever it was that was jumping.

Having tried vibes, cranks, top water and grubs, I eventually settled on a 3inch paddle tail plastic and thought the tail's vibration would attract a bite. Aaaaaand it did 😁

Within the space of half an hour, I managed to land 3 Bream, ranging from low 20s to an impressive 35. Also losing one, setting the hook too a little too emphatically 🤦

Phil, in the meantime, never gave up on those jumping fish 😂. Unfortunately, no success there.

All in all, a wet but fun night session. Thanks to Phil for getting me out past my bedtime 🤙 hopefully the first of many sessions together.

Thanks for reading. Hope everybody manages to get out over the weekend 🎣

  15. Understand how you feel mate.

Until recently, I was struggling too. With some advice and tuition from @DerekD, I'm feeling more confident. Still working on it though, need more time on the water.

I'd highly advise reaching out, even if just for a chat. I feel some topwater success stories coming soon 😁
