There have been plenty of salmon on most beaches and a few tailor too. The beaches are probably a better bet than the rocks, though the break wall to the entrances on the north side will often turn up a few fish. I find most fish are in deep gutters or simply moving along the beach, so being on the move rather than stationary on rocks tends to be a better way of finding them.

From Tilba beach to Tuross would be the best places, though some rather green water has just moved in and things seem to of quietened down a little. Each of my trips to Brou beach just north of Dalmeny have resulted in constant catches of fish once found by walking and flicking 40g lures. The kids have been catch and releasing up around 30 fish each on recent sessions there. Any lure you can get out into the gutters will work.

Thanks for the info! I’ll be fishing off rocks about 10 minutes south of Narooma and will have to stay on the rocks as the beach is rocky and weedy.

There are cod the whole length of the Macquarie river with access to the river being the hardest part. Easiest access points would be at root hogg fire crossing or long point from there it's pack your bags and start walking.

There are plenty of deep holes along the river but there has been significant fish kills recently due to the drought and poor water quality so could be tough fishing.

Pretty much all of the dams in the area have cod in them now but pretty much all of them are closed at the moment due to COVID-19.

Hey, root hog seems to be on the bridle track isn't it? I'm looking around on maps and can't find an access route to it. Can you drive to the bridle track or do you leave your car somewhere and walk?

Any location is worth a try Will, the cod don't know if they're at a park with easy access or a remote location. What can affect the potential to catch them is the frequency that they are caught and their feeding habits. Some days you can catch them easily but more often they are likely to shut down. Only 1 way to find out, have a go. bn

Alright thanks! I am gonna try swimbaits and spinner baits? Is it too late for topwater?

Thanks mate, have you heard of jubilee Park on the macquarie near bathurst? I'm thinking of that spot because it is easy access, do you reckon there would be cod there?

  5. Hey guys I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any Murray cod spots in the macquarie River within an hour of bathurst? If not has anyone had any luck with cod around Orange, Carcoar, Blayney etc in the Belubula River?

    Thanks

    Hey Will,

Just thinking out of the box here but are you only buying the rod to try fishing for Murray cod and Murray trout?? Is this something you plan to do a lot of? I suspect you are on a budget. The problem is that this is one situation where you should be spending the money to get a good entry level reel. Years ago I looked at the Shimano Chronarch and Curado and went the Curado as I couldn't justify the extra $100 for the frequency I'd use it.

People who chase them regularly such as @big Neil please feel free to chime in on this train of thought.

The advantages of the baitcaster is regularly stated as being the pinpoint accuracy (can thumb the spool to land the lure), their line rating for how compact they are (the spool is supported from both sides), the light weight if you are casting all day. From personal experience I will use my baitcaster for a sugapen lure as the shorter rod length (than my snapper raider) and the grip I use makes it real easy to get the walk the dog action I like. For most other stuff I go back to the spinning rod.

Why not try it with your Snapper Raider first. It has a 5 to 8kg (you said you'd already put a 15lb braid on it) line rating and you can up your leader to say 40lb for abrasion resistance but use the FG joiner knot. You can cast lure weights to 45gm by rod rating and larger based on how you load the rod up when casting. By practice or feathering the line you should get pretty good at placing the lure. Yes you might lose a couple of fish but no assurance you would have landed them with the baitcaster either. If you find you love it then save the money for a decent set-up so you won't need to upgrade down the track.

    Regards,

    Derek

Thanks For the advice! I have recently been doing that (thumbing the spool to get accurate casts) and I feel like it's time to invest in a baitcaster. Thanks

The combo which you are looking at will get you started fishing for Cod. I think that the reel also comes in a left hand wind model. This outfit will certainly fit your needs. You will be able to chuck most spinnerbaits and hard bodied lures (up to the size of Stumpjumper #1) with it. Unless you find yourself catching metre length Murray Cod with every cast, it will do you for a few years.

When you get your combo I would practice using it with an old lure (remove the hooks). Lure fishing with baitcasters is a finesse sport, the more practice the sooner the results IMO. 30 lb braid and leader and you should be good to go, once you get the all clear from the authorities that you can go fishing. Good luck bn

OK thanks. I just found  out the cast weight for the rod is up to 48grams. And I thought we still are akoud to go fishing in nsw just with one person???

look at the lure weight rating for the rod and check it against the lures you intend to use

I can't find the lure weighting for it

  10. Hey guys, I am very new to cod  fishing and I am buying my first baitcaster setup. I don't fish for cod very often so because of this I won't be spending lots of money. I just want to ask you guys if a 4-8kg baitcaster rod is good enough for cod. Its an Abu garcia Pro max combo which has a 4 to 8kg rod and a reel with a 7.1:1 gear ratio. I will be using it with spinner baits and some smaller hard bodies for rivers and sometimes dams. Also I can't find the lure rating for this rod anywhere, I have looked everywhere and cant find it, if anyone knows it could you please share it with me. Do you guys think this combo will get the job done? Thanks

  11. Hey Guys. I am investing in a baitcaster for Murray cod! The problem is I have no idea about baitcasters. Firstly, can you change the reel handle from right to left or do you have to buy a separate reel - All the baitcasters I have found online are right handed. And also if anyone has any suggestions for a baitcaster combo/ baitcaster rod and reel for under $200 that would be great. I will be fishing in rivers and sometimes in dams. Thanks

Well done. I'd say the learning about the reel's internals and the satisfaction of fixing it would far outweigh the $50 it would have cost to replace it.

There might have been a burr or splinter on one of the gear teeth.

Guys bad news. I took it apart, cleaned and greased it and it was fixed and back working normally, I took it out this afternoon and after about half an hour the same problem started happening. Now I'm at home (3 hours later) and my reel seems to have magicalky fixed itself . Hmmmmm could it be to do with the line being wet??

Hey guys just to let you know I took the reel apart, cleaned the grease and oil off it and re greased it, cleaned it all up, put it back togethor and magically the problem is know solved. Who knows what was wrong with it.

    Hi Will,

Because of the drag system (metal and felt or carbon washers in the top of the spool) turning the spool by hand is probably not a good indication of your problem. Unless you have the drag totally locked down the spool should turn but the resistance will vary depending on how tight the drag is. That you can't turn the handle implies it is an internal issue with bearings or gears.

When you say dunked are you talking completely submerged in water and more than once?? If that is a yes then I'd be pretty confident that is the root cause of the issue you are now seeing.

    Regards,

    Derek

I have dunked it twice in freshwater yes.

    Hi Will,

Considering the Siennas can be bought for $50 I wouldn't even bother about taking it in for service. Still worth taking it apart yourself as a learning exercise. If you repair it you've saved $50 if you stuff it up then you have learned something.

    Regards,

    Derek

Thanks. I'm wondering if something needs greasing because I can move the actual spool round without issues but when I use the handle it sometimes seizes up.

  16. 4 hours ago, kingie chaser said:

True, but whats actually wrong with it?

Once you start pulling reels apart you also void the warranty.

While I do agree with Derek, the OP sounds like he doesn't know to much about reels otherwise he wouldnt be asking the question so it could be worth getting it checked out by the Shimano service centre, if they find its not warrantable then just take it back.

Its worth making a call & asking.

Many people who don't know much about reels often cant put them back together once pulled apart!

I have 2 of the same reels, they are pretty cheap but I still treat them with the same respect as my most expensive reels & expect to get a good lifespan out of them.

@Will Wright, how old is the reel?

Has the reel been dropped in sand?

Has the reel been washed down after use with the drag done up?

Had the reel been left out in the elements?

Could be something very simple, could be not?

The  reel is about 6 months old and it has never been used in or near saltwater. The closest time it's "been exposed to the elements" was a couple of times I dunked it in freshwater by accident when dealing with fish while wading. Never been dropped in sand or dirt. Does anybody reckon it could be a grease/oil job on a certain part? Yeah it's just a bit rough while reeling and sometimes when pausing then starting again the reel handle seizes up (it is only the handle because I can move the actual spool with no issues) Thanks

  17. Hey guys, I have recently started noticing that on my shimano Sienna 2500, when reeling it in it is a bit gritty but still works but then when I stop winding and try to wind again, the reel handle struggles to get going round again. When this happens I have to use force and it implicates on my action when using plastics. Does anybody know what might be going on with this reel and what I could do to fix it. e. g. What part to take out? What part to oil? Etc...

    Thanks

  18. Hey guys just wondering if you guys could give me Some suggestions on a rod and reel meant for catching redfin on lures. I prefer shimano and my price range is just as cheap as possible but still with shimano. Thanks

  19. Hey guys so I’m wondering if  my raider snapper with a 4000 reel can handle cod it’s got 15-45gm lure weight and I’ve got 15lb braid with 30lb leader. Is this good enough to cast big lures land based for murray cod?

    thanks

Good report,& fish I’m in sure once the river settles & slows up a bit I t should improve, nice solid chunky rainbow, the water doesn’t look to badly coloured in that part of the dam, I wonder if after that cast the lure had more time to sink & drew the attention of the trout & as soon as you started moving it inhaled the spinner

Yeah I’m hoping the rivers improve soon! Yeah must of been the time when I started to walk that the spinner had time to sink. Thanks!

Persistence rewarded Will. What a lovely, healthy fish. As suggested by 61crusher I suspect the lure imitated a smaller fish in distress and the Trout jumped on it. You can do 99 things that don't work and then the 1 that does. Good report, thanks for posting it. bn

Thanks, I’ve gotta try that technique again now!
