Fyi, there's quite a few people here who own outbacks, they all know the ins and outs of their kayaks, best to have a chat to them. Derek and I own a revo, Derek knows much more than me though. Good luck with it and hope you have fun and stay safe

Just as a warning, the outback doesn't surf launch well

    Thanks all! Very helpful.

I'll mostly be using it on freshwater impoundments, with the occasional foray into Sydney harbour/botany etc, so I'm leaning towards the Outback.

Also seems like the Outback is the most widely available and best priced on the second hand market.

Yeah the outback would suit your needs best. Just be aware the new one is very heavy, much more then the older.

  3. Check front and rear of hull for thing plastic, pop your head in the hatch and shine a torch on the front and rear, if you see much light, its been worn hence dragged. just keep that in mind. Mine was like that on the rear so I just got the rear guard and marine goop and filled it.

The clips for the pedal drive are a weak point, also the hole where the pedal drive goes through is prone to cracking.

rudder lines wear out so check the rudder is fully functioning

pedal dive, ive sheared the wheel and a couple of other bits.

I bought mine this year, it was a YT kayak and then an offshore one, so its been used hard. came with minor issues but after a bit of care going strong, the hull is pretty bullet proof. you look after it, it will last, if you dont expect a living nightmare, like most boats though lol

if your chasing a revo, mates selling his, its in pretty good condition happy to dm you the details

Sorry to muck up your very clear explanation but 30% of 180 is 54 and 180 - 54 is 126. Not trying to be a smart arse slothparade, it may be relevant to what Frank is trying to achieve.

    bn

thanks for picking that up, that would be on my end, been a while since ive done any math just want to forget about hsc lol. no hard feelings, appreciate you picking up on my error

Just guessing, the .3 comes from 30% charge left when flat. 54 comes from the battery being 180AH, divided by .3. 15 being the current (amps) from the charger. All those numbers are "rubbery" at best, batteries are very complicated, and way more complicated than most think, especially when modern day materials are used.

Yeah, couldn't agree more. Tried to break it down to be pretty simple. There's to many variables to properly predict the time it will take for your battery to charge. Sorry I was meant to say that the numbers are basically theoretical and under controlled conditions, as there is way to many factors affecting everything.

Thanks for the reply but I can't see where these figures come from. I can understand the 15 being 15 amps but where does the 0.3 come from ? and the 136 ? I unfortunately left school at 13 and maths was not among my best subject to start with.

Could you explain to me this formula.

    Frank

Sorry for the confusion, been a while since I've don't any math.

The 0.3 is 30% of 180 because lead acid stop releasing energy (running your electronics) at about 30% of total battery life. 30% of 180 is 54, so 180-54 is 136. 130 (remaining Amps in battery from 'flat' divided by 15 which is the rate at the battery charges. Hope this helps. Sorry again

  7. Your never run a batter completely flat, sorry just wanted to make sure. I'm pretty sure for lithium ion, the lowest it lets you go to is 15-20% of it's capacity and for lead acid I think it's like 30-40%. Someone probably knows the exact figures, I just know a rough estimate

For your battery your probably looking at:

    0.3 x 180 = 54 that's your from 'flat' start point

Then at a constant 15 Amps per hour would be 136/15 = 8.4 hours +- a bit due to battery health, resistance ect. These calculations are relying on ideal scenarios.

G’day guys. Heading to Walsh bay for a flick tomorrow. Will try for kings there. Is it also a good place to catch live squid and yakkas?

Peir 2 and peir 8 are ok but need a particular burley

  9. What's stopping you from drilling a hole on a bottle cork, running some fishing line through that and tieing it onto of the notches in the hand line? It will get in the way a bit but you will get used to it. Just make the line short enough, or just make a look knot which you run through something on the kayak so it secures your handling to the kayak. I do it with my tools when kayaking in surf, works well. Just make the line long enough to give yourself some working room without getting in twh way. Can send pics if needed

  10. Everything is weird at the moment. Couple of weeks ago, the break were on fire, usually never see or hear of anyone catching anything, instead they were everywhere. Also the mullet have basically disappeared, they're usually a plague, but recently been very quiet. The Jewish have been extremely quiet as well. What's even stranger is the rays have all but disappeared usually see multiple but last few times lucky to see 1 or 2. What's even weirder is that the sharks were around not that long ago, not in large numbers but they were around, now nothing at all.

It's a bit concerning that everything is changing so much, let's just hope this is a one off

  11. I have the same issue on my car. I'd say that the battery has had it, guessing it's a lead acid?

The power usage on your motor shouldn't be that bad through. Have you checked you don't have anything else wired to it?

Have a look at the draw from the motor then add a bit for conditions, that should be an indicator of how long your battery should last. Leave a bit of wiggle room but if it's significantly different, (lasted a lot less than it should have) that will indicate you have a did battery.

How old is the battery? They loose a bit of amp hours each charge, might also indicate you need a new battery.

Hope this helps, probably not the worst idea to talk to a store as mentioned before

  12. Yeah Walsh bay can be ok. There's a school of kings that regularly live around the piers. I use 50 lbs braid and 50 lbs fluro, for kings. For trevs much lighter.

Around the sides, there are squid, really slowly bring the lure back, personally didn't have much success but they are there, there's also yakkas there, but need burely.

1 st time there was broken off by something big, second time someone next to me pulls out a 10 kg bonito.

The king's are weird there, best bait is live prawns though 👍

I have a small collection of old reels, mainly dating back to the 1960’s and know of a few other Raiders that also collect.

Perhaps throw up a couple of photos and we can possibly help identify exactly what you have.

will do, sorry not been feeling well hence not been active. the hayfever has really been getting to me

  14. heres how i use my lure setups

    Bait caster:

    - usually on kayak where precission casting required, great when casting into mangroves, pylons, trees, rocks ect

    - great for chucking 'heavier' lures

I absolutely love my biatcaster though the learning curve wasn't easy but it is one of my most used setups

In the other hand for light things like bream I use a nasci on a dawia td, pretty nice and fun to use though I tend to loose more gear when casting into snags

for heavy lures, i use a slammer or a penn battle as the baitcaster is suited to hardbodies, like 10-25g not large stick baits ect

as your new, id be going a spin setup probably a sienna 2500 on a catana rod or simillar, will be quite light and should be easy to learn and not cost an arm and a leg. also buy second hand, so when you go to upgrade you can hopefully make some money back if not gain money,

as for technique, look for bustups, bait schools, snags and edges and drop offs. I not any where near as experinced as others but i do enjoy doing a bit of lure fishing now and again and had great sucess, just recently caught a bream on a lure which ranked in the top 3 of the largest bream ive ever caught

What Vintage are you referring to ?

In different fields vintage is a term used to detemine the approx age of a item, in furniture 50 years old could be classed as Vintage, in other fields as little as 20 years old could be considered Vintage.

With fishing gear it is in my opinion that an item 40 years or older would be classed as Vintage.

Antique on the other hand is generally class as 100 years old in must fields.

    Frank

From a bit of research the rod appears to be from the 50s-70s and the reel looks to be from the 60s-80s
