  1. Awesome, thanks! Nope, never reversed a trailer in my life! Another thing to learn I guess!
  2. Thanks JonD. What would the 750kg look like in terms of a Quintrex Renegade or Stacer Outlaw? I had a look at the specifications on the Quintrex site and it says the Renegade 420, 440 and 460 weigh 371kg, 381kg and 448kg respectively. I imagine you add to that the weight of the fuel and the trailer and still try and stay under 750kg? If you had the exact same boat on a braked and unbraked trailer, is there any difference in the ease of towing it around? I drive a large 4WD capable of towing 3.5T but I've never towed anything more than bicycles in my life so it is another thing making me anxious about boat ownership. Cheers.
  3. Thanks shakey. It might be silly but I am hoping to buying once for at least 5-10 years and only change if my fishing preferences change. Do you reckon a 440+ would do the trick with those circumstances? I'm pretty convinced now that a 420 is too small and a 460 would be ideal but there are slim pickings so I might have to take what I can get in either a Stacer Outlaw or Quintrex Renegade somewhere in the 440-460 size range. Cheers.
  4. Thanks Sea Ranger and JustJames. Very interesting JustJames - thanks for the perspective. I especially like the tip about buying the seller and thanks for teaching me a new acronym 😂
  5. I'm not sure what the ramps have been like but I can hear plenty of jetskis out on the water lately and on the handful of occassions I've been out fishing landbased post lockdown there are heaps more boats in Botany Bay than I've seen at any time over the last year. I'm hoping it all dies down in a couple of weeks time when I will hopefully get my own boat
  6. Thanks Fab1 and noelm. It sounds to me like a 420 is a no go, even if I am only by myself if I want to do anything even remotely offshore, good to know! I'll keep an eye out for 440s - seems like it is slim pickings even with my budget for anything recent. Maybe there is a lot of post pandemic boat buying happening in the moment. Wouldn't be surprised if at this time next year there are loads of boats for sale that have been "garden gnomes" !
  7. Thanks everyone for the responses, super helpful! One more question - is a 4 stroke a big benefit over a 2 stroke? Any particular brands of motors I should look for or avoid? Looking for something reliable and low maintenance.
  8. Thanks guys! I’ll mostly be fishing the Georges, Botany Bay, lake Illawarra and down around St Georges Basin. Sounds like a 440 should be alright for me and my needs?
  9. Thanks Noelm. So are you saying that Stacer, Quintrex and Savage hulls are the same? Sounds like I defintely need to go for a 440+. Thanks for the advice!!!
  10. Thanks bluefin! Thanks Dave. Thats what I was thinking also, I should have mentioned I like the idea of a side console. When you say "get you out in rougher conditions", can I assume you're talking about offshore in high wind/swell conditions?
  11. Hi all, Firstly, apologies for the newbie question. I'm new to boating (will be getting my license next month) and am looking for some advice on my first boat. Looking for a boat mostly for estuary and bay fishing but might go futher afield in nice weather. Planning on fishing about half the time on my own and half the time with my wife and two kids (about 10 years old) and maybe on a very rare occassion with third adult in the boat with my family. I mostly fish for bread and butter species. Was hoping to get something with a reasonably powered motor and a minn kota or similar for spot lock. Looking to spend somewhere around the 20-25k mark second hand. Now finally for the question - I've been looking around and it seems a Quintrex Renegade in either 440 or 460 might fit the bill but wondering if I would get away with a 420? Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide! Cheers, Salvatore
  12. Yeah that’s my reading of it too. Can’t leave those specific LGAs for work, can exercise within 10km of house or within LGA.
  13. Is it within 10km AND within the LGA or within 10km OR within the LGA? I've only a shitty little bit of the Georges within the LGA but if I can go 10km I can get to some pretty decent spots.
  14. Thanks for all the replies and ideas! I’ll give fishing further up the system, bait, vibes and heavier jig heads a go. If that’s no good I’ll go with some surf fishing! Thanks again!
  15. Exactly what I was hoping for, some new tactics 😄
  16. Hi All, I've become addicted to fishing since about last September and have had lots of success landbased in Botany Bay, particularly from the beaches south of the airport. I fish only soft plastics and usually use a 7' ~2-4kg paired with a 2500 with 10lb braid/10lb fluoro throwing 1/8th - 1/4oz jigheads with z-man slim swimz and grubz - I've pulled everything from a 62cm flattie to a 63cm kingie. I've noticed over the last month I've gone from pulling in at least a few decent fish around sunrise to barely getting a hit. I know the bite slows down in winter but I was hoping I'd still get something. My favourite fishing at the moment is for the humble flathead. Any hints on what I should be doing to get onto legal flathead from the land from now until spring in Botany Bay? Is it possible? Thanks in advance! Sam
  17. I just picked up a Legalis 2500D too - and it would seem I am slowly moving away from Shimano. It feels as good as my Stradic FL and maybe even my CI4+ but time will tell about longevity. It is certainly good value for money either way.
  18. If anyone is interested in how this turned out, I received the new roller clutch assembly and installed it today. The reel is all back together, and smoother than before I started this saga but the inertia in spinning the reel (which is what bothered me in the first place!) is still there I'll probably send it in to Shimano after a season of use and hopefully they'll be able to sort out the inertia issue but for now the reel is functioning smoothly enough, I know there is no corrosion in it, all the bearings have been replaced and I've learned a hell of a lot... (and my wallet is lighter!)
  19. Could this be it? https://www.tackleaustralia.com.au/berkley-gulp-bulk-jar-fishing-soft-plastic-lures-i
  20. You can do that, I've done it before. I wouldn't do it if they cost me a buck a pop... To be fair, I bought like 10 packs of them from a shop one time as they were in a $2 clearance bin for some strange reason. They're perfectly fine!
  21. I'm not sure but I bought a bunch of them in packets with only these - got them in Breen and Camo. I think there are about 10 per packet and they're about $10 a pack from memory.
  22. This is the Gulp Crabby in Breen colour. I use these also when it is a tough bite on Z-Man soft plastics. These Gulp lures fish almost like bait and don't generally last for me more than 3-4 casts as all the little claws (especially), antennae and legs get eaten by pickers and they're useless without those. They're a dynamite "bait" though for tough days.
  23. Wow, thats crazy! What excellent service! Thanks for the info.
  24. Thanks Green Hornet! When you say the anti reverse bearing, is that the same as the roller clutch assembly? Sorry if that is a dumb question
  25. Hmmm, thats an idea... might as well pull it apart. I've found I can order a replacement for about $25 which I am going to do anyway... You're right - I bought the reel online which was a mistake - I was curious about 1000 size reels but didn't want to drop the full amount for a new one... which I have done at the end of the day! I am glad at the same time because I have learned SO much by pulling it apart and reassembling it twice so far. I would actually recommend it for other newbies if they've got a reel they don't care about too much because I think I have a far better idea of how it all works and what I need to do to keep my reels in tip top condition. I bought another reel second hand yesterday but this time saw it in person and couldn't be happier. It is so clean and beautiful inside and out! Thanks for all the responses!
