    Great feed of prawns there.

    Thankyou

Some great result @Isaac Ct - they are good sized prawns, well done.

(last time I went prawning I threw a handline out with a livie on it and bagged a feed of flathead and flounder as well - and also netted a few squid.)

Thanks Bob, was going to use some for live bait, just debating whether they are too big or not

Good to see you out getting a few Isaac. So much tastier than anything you buy in the shops.
There should be some good ones running in the inlet as well.

Thanks Pete, any smaller and they will be live bait .

    Correct, they look nice. 😋

Good work Issac, good sized prawns.

Thanks Yowie, much action inside the hacking at the moment?

They are a great size! Forget the pasta, just boil them up, ice them and enjoy with a cold 🍺😜

Cheers mate, might try tomorrow if I manage more

  3. With fishing being alright at best I decided to give prawning a crack around some of the local lakes in Sussex inlet. Last year I managed a few but only being 6-7cm long. With the new moon being only 2 days away it seemed prime for some.

I learnt my lesson with a bad light and made sure I used a good one so I could actually see. Within a few minutes I saw a set of golden eyes in the light, bingo, and it was a lot bigger than the group from last year. Turned out the prawns were double the size from last year and will be turned into a pasta shortly. For comparison, the very bottom and smallest one of the night would’ve been one of the biggest from last year.

Dark coloured flatties, water must have been a little deeper. Nice fillets in that lot.

Thanks Yowie, flatties weren’t sitting too deep just water colour very murky at the moment in the basin.

Well done Isaac- 56 is a really good flathead. Must have been frustrating for your mate only getting the puffer 😆

Thanks Bob, doesn’t affect me, I get all the fish😁

Nice fish Isaac. Judging by the lack of trailers at the ramps this morning, I’m guessing the fishing is tough in The Basin at the moment.

Thanks Pete, personally don’t think it’s slow, just got all the fish up on the edges out of the way of all the jellyfish. Just got to find a patch of fish and keep fishing it

  5. Hello all, been a while since a report as these holidays haven’t been as fruitful as previous. Besides a few semi-decent spinning sessions of the beach resulting in a few tailor and some lure sessions up local creeks today was the first decent day.

After 2 weeks of struggling to find poddie mullet, I finally found some and made plans to head out early. Launched at 530 and made my way with a mate to the main basin and started a drift along a patch we had had previous luck in. Slow start but eventually boated a few fish, myself landing all 5 and my mate only managing a pufferfish. Biggest going 56 smallest 37.

    Happy new year to all

Ended up buying a cheap container from Bunnings - went and chucked my pot out for the first time this afternoon and sat nearby.

Less than 20 minutes later a bloke walking the banks starts pulling it out….some choice words for him, is it always this bad? 😂

Wow, goes to show how desperate people can be. I know would I would’ve said.

A good little haul of different species Isaac Ct, well done.   bn

Thanks Neil, was a bit surprised with the variety in the end.

Nice catch mate, though bad luck on the big whiting. I would have liked to see one on the brag mat almost as much as you.

Thanks Pete, is the basin firing at the moment? I am planning to come down very soon and target some prawns as well as flathead.

    Nice haul mate!

I’ve found it tough going on the nippers down there in the past too. Plenty of holes but not many coming up.

    Couple of nice trevs! 👍
Heard that good sized trevs are also being caught around jibbon point atm.

    Thanks Larkin, interesting to hear.

    Still a great catch mate.

I hoping to get out this Friday night and get a few poddies for live bait before chasing a jew later that night in the hacking somewhere. Did you see many poddies zipping around on the flats?

Thanks mate, surprisingly I didn't see any poddies which isn't usually the case. Just lots of little whitebait, maybe up SWA would be the go for the poddies?

Good to see you back Isaac. That bigger Trev is a thumper!

Thanks Mike, was very happy with it. Good size fillets for ceviche.

Good to see you getting into a few fish. Couple of nice eating size flatties.

Thanks Yowie, have you been out recently?

  9. Been a while since I've been out for a fish and yesterday was the perfect chance to get out. Walked out onto the sandflats and had a bit of trouble with the nippers, only about 20 in 20 minutes. Fished the incoming tide along the flats and drop-off with them and proved to be one of the best days I've had in a long time. Lots of small baitfish were congregating just on the sandflat next to the drop-off. First fish was the longtom, dad ate them as a kid and wanted to try it. My friend got his first flathead (the bigger one) just off the drop-off on a nipper and I had a day out catching basically every other fish. The odd stingray thrown in it was a good result considering our low bait supply, as well as salmon busting up often. About halfway through the session the biggest whiting I had ever seen came chasing my nipper whilst I was reeling in, hit then gone. Estimated high forties if not bigger. After about 2 minutes I hooked up to another big one over the shallows, we could see the dorsal fin and tail out of the water and geez the fish looked massive again, then gone. Another heartbreak. Both trevally were hooked in the shallows then ran into the channel, my guess is all sorts of fish were pushing bait up and feeding on them. A few small bream later we called it a day. A very mixed bag and a few feeds to share around.

    Cheers, Isaac
