Good to see you out giving it a go. The size 12 hooks will almost always increase your hookup rate when you are getting bites but no hookups.
Only legal fish can be used for bait. In NSW, this means juvenile bream cannot be used for bait. The DPI website has the relevant size limits, and if your scroll to the bottom, you will see bag limits for common bait species: https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational/fishing-rules-and-regs/saltwater-bag-and-size-limits
Great thanks. Seems like Poddy Mullet can be used. I've seen a guy catch poddies using size 12 hook with bread.

Started the new season with a bunch of new things:
- Salted Prawn
- New Okuma reel
- New braid
- New leader(or using for the first time)
A number of mid day sessions recently allowed me to catch juvenile fish for bait using size 12 hooks.
29/1: Bobbin head, midday, outgoing tide, catching two juvenile bream, released
1/09: Bobbin head, midday, high tide, catching two juveniles 1 bream 1 unknown, used unknown for bait, no catch
For me, Bobbin Head is a difficult area especially the picnic area so I'm not surprised I didn't catch a bigger fish using fresh bait. I'll try this technique in other places.
Question - Can juvenile bream be used for bait? Or is it only certain species?

Fishingmad is pretty good. I follow this couple who are beginners fishing around Sydney, they're no pros but I see them on the same journey as me -

Is it Whiting season already or are they around all year? I thought they were a summer fish.

I just bought new braid and realised that after the first maybe 50 metres, the line wasn't discoloured(though had the wet stickiness). Is it a better idea to avoid adding the full length of braid on the spool and then restring the used part?
-
Thinking of replacing the Pryml braid I added last year and adding flurocarbon leader.
Probably a 6lb capacity will suit me for both.

How about the old common garden worm? I am sure it has taken its fair share of fish.
I have a compost bin at home and I keep thinking of using them. However, It seems a bit icky to me

So it's that time of the year again when Sydney brings out it's best blue skies and the best sunshine without burning your skin.
Can someone tell me when/if the water temperature starting turning enough for the Fish to be aggressive again? Specifically, I mean from land in the estuaries(I know some of you fish through the Winter).

So I ended up going and the prices seemed pretty high. However, someone here DM'd me an Aussie guy and I contacted him. He had a competitive price and I asked him for availability. Unfortunately, 1) He never got back to me and 2) I got Bali belly on the proposed day anyway.
@mrsswordfisherman - What is the good time of the year for Fishing in Bali? This won't be my last trip to Bali, We had a great time. Might make a Winter trip to Bali a regular occurrence.

I’ll be there in 2 weeks, staying in Legian. Haven’t really looked at charters yet. You might get a better shot a few days after the full moon. I’ll have the new moon.
Thanks mate. Timings won't match unfortunately.

Hey guys,
I am heading to Bali next week and one of the ideas from the group was to do a fishing charter from Nusa Dua. Has anyone had experience with this and if so, what are your thoughts?
From reviews, it seems the Fishing isn't amazing around Bali but the tour operators themselves have some great photos.
Happy to hear thoughts

So after reading all about Winter fishing, Tailor, Snapper et al, I decided on a trip to the harbour after work.
I bought salted blue Tweed bait from the petrol station and some bread.
I wouldn't say I had high hopes but certainly I got 0 bites on the bread or blue pilchards.
Meanwhile there was a bloke preparing to catch Jews at night. I hope he did.
Tide: Low turning to high
Place: Wharf
Summary: 2hrs, cold, no bites

Warilla beach, I live on the southern end of the beach, the Tailor school is "busting up" in a school maybe 300m wide, easy to see them. They have been coming every morning for a few days now.
That's way too far for me to get to but I assume it's the same across the coast at the moment.

The big school of Tailor showed up again today, same time as yesterday, no one fishing though, closest they were was probably 15m from the beach, then slowly moved along to the rocks chasing small baitfish.
What area is this? I don't need the spot, just the area

Maybe a 10-20g Halco twisty. Regardless of the kind of fishing I am doing, I almost always have one on me.
Hey Mike,
What's the technique to run it? Throw a long way and retrieve really fast? -

Tailor will take just about anything, bait or lures, small metal lures cast out and retrieved fast will get them going, just this morning there was a huge school of decent Tailor boiling on the surface right out the front on my place, within easy casting distance, a few guys got a bucket full easy, they were about 2KG approx.
When you say small, how small and which metal lures?

Hi all,
It seems to be a Winter fish and apparently more of them now then in the Summer. What are your tips for catching Tailor especially in estuaries? Particularly, can they be caught on bait or are lures necessary?
I am ok to hit the harbour for them but I'd rather not do a trip to the harbour with nothing to show for in the cold.
Kind regards,

Hey Ya'll
I've been seeing videos about salted baits on Youtube. I reached this rabbit hole when searching about how to avoid having a prawn picked apart.
Anyone salt their baits and if so, what the benefit of this?
Cheers

I was curious to know how the fishing is affected in the Winter. Does the cooler water have an effect on the stocks? or is it simply a change of the types of fish in the water?

A few thoughts to add to the collective wisdom of the guru’s advice already offered.
* DONT USE ANYTHING TNAT WILL IMPART SCENT TO BAIT OR LINES (insect spray, suntan lotion, perfumes etc). I always wear a hat, long sleeve shirt and pants and covered footwear.
* Polarised sunglasses really help see what’s going on (but look in shadows not the glare on water surface).
* change of tide (an hour before and an hour after the tide change - either high or low tide) can often be most productive.
* use bait (or replicated lures) relevant to time of year or season e.g. prawns commonly run in summer on new moon. Garfish common in cooler months (just started in the harbour now). Squid and cuttlefish are bigger at this time of year and common etc.
* keep light (head torch etc) and noise to a minimum for bream and jewfish - but kingfish love noise and surface splash (I always have playlists happening for Kingies).
* match your gear to the species - hook size and shape, line, rod, reel etc.
* For most bait fishing, my choice is circle hooks for most species, except trailer where Kendal Kirby (J) hooks ganged is preference and whiting (J) hooks also.
* Fish with a buddy - “share the love” and it’s safer, also good to have a “net man” to help land the fish.
I've had lots of bites with prawn but perhaps its the frozen ones, somehow the fish remove it right the hook.
Apple Tree Bay - Quick Flick
in Fishing Reports
Posted · Edited by HawkesburyParadise
Quick flick at Apple Tree Bay today.
Tide: Rising
Bait: Salted White Bait
Hook: Size 12 long shank
Summary
Quick flick to try and catch something. High tide was still many hours away but I got to see the lay of the land in ATB.
Not many bites but I think I got a Yakka. It had some chompers on it.
Also, is this the weed that squid hide in?
Not too much but somethings better than nothing.
