  1. PS You can probably upgrade transducers to the 50/200Hz, but I can't tell you must more than that.
  2. No problem mate, wish I knew better before I bought it! Oh well maybe a back up will come in handy at some point. Let me know which one you go for.
  3. Its transducer isn't suited for blue water fishing. Also it only runs NMEA0183, so in my case I want to install a fuel flow sensor but the Elite 5 can't read its NMEA2000 output so I either have to get a multi-function gauge or a plotter that reads and displays NMEA2000 data. Otherwise the Elite 5 isn't too bad. It comes with Navionics gold which is an added bonus worth about $300 or so from memory. Depends where you fish and your data requirements on your boat.
  4. Hi, I'm also running an elite 5 alone at the moment. May I ask why you want to run an HDS as well? I'm not overly happy with my elite 5 and if funding permits I would consider doing the same. Cheers
  5. Cheers guys, I'll try give them a call. Otherwise ill scrap the 183 and set up 2000
  6. Good idea but I'm not sure...does anyone know if this is possible?
  7. Ok so I've read many opinions on the web about somehow converting NMEA 2000 to NMEA 0183. I bought a Lowrance Elite-5 6 months ago thinking I wouldn't need the NMEA connections other than for DSC and the unit came with Navionics gold so I went for it. Anyway now I'd like to install a fuel flow sensor like the Lowarnce EP-60 (I think that's what it's called). The problem is that this unit uses NMEA2000. Obviously I'd like to display it's data on my plotter so that I don't have to go and buy one of their multi-function gauges (such as the LMF-200). So my question is: Is there some sort of converter I can buy that will convert the NMEA 2000 data from various electronic sensors into a readable NMEA0183 data format for my plotter? Or should I just get the Lowrance multifunction gauge for $230? Cheers
  8. Make sure you always watch the waves breaking on the seaward to southern side. It could be pretty easy to focus on something on your boat etc and get in too close. Like a lot of others have said, I've fished that area and up to 3-4kms wide with a 12ft tinny. It's about YOU and what YOU'RE comfortable with. You need to know your area of competence and where you draw the line, if you don't know if you're competent with what you're doing then you're outside it.
  9. Cheers Huey, I've spoken to Gary about using stainless for the frame and aluminium for the hard top. What do you reckon?
  10. Cheers Huey, I might have to stick with the rocket launcher/t-top sort of design. That shouldn't weigh too much should it?
  11. I'm looking to get some of these as well. But hopefully at least one made of alloy/stainless with a fuel tank built into it to increase my range. I assume you've had a look at these already but there's a company in avalon that makes them called Boat Box Boat Box Site
  12. Its a 19ft Vickers fiberglass with closed cabin (very similar shape to a Haines V19C). Hull weight it 730kg without motor, fuel etc etc.
  13. On the topic of weight, would there be a difference in the effect the weight of a hardtop would have on a fiberglass boat compared to an alloy of the same size? I'm looking at putting a rocket launcher frame with either a 't-top' or hard top incorporated into the structure but am concerned about the weight differences.

    Help needed

I'd be looking at something similar to a Haines V19C. However, I don't think you'll get a good one in that price range due to their popularity but there are quite a few similar boats out there for less. I was looking for one similar myself and ended up with a Vickers 186 (or 570 easyrider)

    PFD's

Hey mate I've seen a few jackets tested in a wet drill sea survival session and trust me you want one which keeps your heap up and doesn't let you roll face down. If you're willing to spend 70 bucks go for some of the manually inflatable ones. I've personally tested the hutchwilco ones (which were 70 for me a few months ago) and they worked perfectly. Just remember that even if you are only fishing enclosed waters you may as well spend the extra $ on such vital safety equipment. After all I remember reading about some fishermen stuck in botany bay for quite a few hours and were lucky enough to find a marker to hang onto. In the end what's $50 bucks extra when it comes to your life, or the lives of your crew.
  16. I had this problem a month ago ( although I hadn't changed the plugs). Check for water in your fuel, it seemed to be the culprit in my case. I think it blocks the injectors in the carby as it's more dense than fuel but I'm no mechanic. Just a thought

    Fish ID

Not a fan of those! Hurt like hell when you step on them in the shallows...never jumped up onto the boat so quickly in my life!

    GPS maps

Hi, what sort of fishing are you doing? My unit came with a navionics gold card and I must say it's great. I find the highly detailed contour lines and marks etc very useful in picking some locations which could hold fish, and also in general navigation, but obviously it all depends on what information you need.
  19. 8 Knots! Thats not a bad speed for a 15 on a 21 footer. Cheers for the input, I have a few months to make a decision so I'll give it some more thought.
  20. Hi thanks to all who replied to this, unfortunately I won't be chasing any game fish until the coming season (around december probably) as the boat has been/will be undergoing a full refurb over winter with some new paint, bigger fuel capacity, canopy etc. I'll be sure to get back to those who sent PMs at that time to see who's still interested. P.S sorry about the late reply to this thred. Cheers, Greg
  21. I think I'll go without the aux and improve upon other safety equipment instead. Cheers everyone who replied, once again raiders have solved one of my problems
  22. Appologies for steering this thred in the wrong direction 'mrsswordfishermen', I hope your changes do push the forum away from being a 'trading place' as you have planned. Cheers for the info.
  23. I think what I and possibly Silvo are saying is not so much to do with 'swap and sell' (although the discussion may be off topic) but the posting of words/names of marketplaces in general discussion. I can see why there is an obvious clash when *bay and swap and sell mix.
  24. Agree with you there! Just under a grand! I was just trying to get an idea of the cost of glass fabrication as I have a few more glass jobs I was hoping to do someday. Looking forward to the pics
  25. I completely understand that you don't want sponsors to be discouraged which I agree with. What I was eluding to by saying that *bay was a household name is that in reality they don't have any competition that sponsor the site. Sure you can buy outboards, fishing gear and so on through sellers on the site but if you are looking on the site for such items you aren't really in the same market as sponsor's products (say a certain sponsor who sells new outboards/boats through a dealership). Although I am aware that you could easily argue the opposite. In the end you cannot prevent members from commenting on products other than those sold by sponsors as: (1) it would be practically too difficult and (2) the activity of fishing today involves many different products and as a result a 'forum' of people who fish will want to compare them so they can improve upon their hobby. I guess it's just my personal opinion that the names of other products or marketplaces should be allowed as it is in fact a forum, not an advertising location. Our sponsors are brilliant in what they do and I have personally been helped and had my motor serviced by Huey and had some advice from Gary from Seriously Stainless, both of which would not be rivaled by any products sold in online auctions as in Gary's case, no overseas budget stainless product would come close to rivaling his custom made top quality fabrications. The involvement and guidance from our sponsors puts them in a position that no online marketplace could challenge, they are simply in a different league. Of course I respect admins decisions as the site has flourished over the last four years I have been a member and my post was more of a question of the reasoning behind some decisions instead of an argument against them. Cheers, Greg
