  1. Haha, finally got some fishing done after annoying uni assignments which make me hugely suicidal... decided to hit up watsons bay cos the conditions there are heaps good for night fishing... chucked in some prawns, mullet, chicken gut, and pilchard.... Not a single bite, but my brother did manage to score a massive 1.1m eel with his pilchard... thought he was pulling in a nice bream or something before the eel revealed itself in the form of a self tied double uni knot... first question - anyone know what i can do with eels?? is it edible? by humans? what about my cat? can i live bait it to catch a seahorse or something? or can i have it made into a belt? i decided to chuck around a squid lure... the cheapo ones you get at+_+_)... within a few casts i landed a nice one!!! mantle length 20cm or so!!!cast around for the rest of the night got nothing... wind was blowing it all over the place... second question - is it edible?? ive been hearing all kinds of stuff about dioxin and mercury and cianide and cancer... so yeah... is it? im not actually too sure if its a squidie... its got 2 long tentacles, a green tinge around the eyes... anyway, so should i stir fry it or just use it as bait? anyway so ya, thats about it... spring is coming hope fishing will boom!!
  2. haha dude still looking for a place to get lunch eh well look ill be fishign all over the place this weekend ill keep an eye out for you ya
  3. hey there what ive been told is just to dice up bits of fish frames or pilchards etc, whatever you want to use, just drop it where the waves a breaking, and walk it into the sand... stomp on it until its well bedded into the sand, and the waves will wash little bits off gradually into the water
  4. ya bro, me and my brother are heading out for a big day friday, we're considering going to parsley bay, camp cove, maroubra for a while, then back to yarra... what about you are you free friday???
  5. went to yarra bay today and got nothing... i thought i would try plastic lures today to target flathead... i walked up and down the entire beach with a worm jig and didnt get a bite... my brother says he got a big hit on his lure but he turned his line into grapes and eventually it all got stuck in the reef... met up with another local friendly fisherman who says he got a salmon off the beach yesterday, but didnt get nothing today either... he was fishing with bait i think, so neither bait nor lure was working today... think this friday to sunday will be good, tides around 6pm, so itll be on time with sunset... thats all folks, hope you all have better luck!
  6. hmmmm been to yarra bay twice now over the last 3 days, and didnt get anything today!!! downed the whiting and flathead caught the other day, have to say flathead is A grade delicious, more so than the whiting!!! which leads me to my question!! Could i get some suggestions for targeting flathead? I see a lot of talk about catching flatheads off lures, but I usually go fishing in the night, so does that mean squidgies dont work because the cant be seen? If so anythign specific about using mullet or pilchards? I still think im casting too close to the beach... also what weight for the line?? should i retrieve??? arghhhh getting hungry want more flathead!!!!
  7. hey there!! ummmm i think the yarra area is pretty much all sand and weed, in terms of the wall i walked all the way to the end... at the start of the wall is just rocks piled together, which is pretty hard to walk on but as you go further out it becomes concrete triangle shaped things, which is quite easy to walk on... i think the snags mostly happen when you reel back in and it gets stuck in some bits of the rock jetty close to your feet, so i guess the key is to hold your rod vertical as you reel in, so your rig comes close to the surface and when it gets close to you try and give it a flick to make it jump out of the water... i didnt find too many snags... at the end of the rock jetty i cast towards the sailing club beach and my brother cast towrads the other beach, and he got his sand whiting there... wrasse eh?? last time i went to the merc caught one they ooze tremendous amounts of slime eh?? anyway all good... any thoughts on how the rain affects fishing?? i wanna go so bad though i might just don a coat and fish in the rain...
  8. hi all thanks heaps for the replies everyone!!! yarra bay is indeed a nice spot, the people at the surf club are heaps nice too... can i ask though, what gear do you guys use to catch them bream and tailor??? im using 20lb on a 3.6m rod, which i find is uncomfortably heavy and i cant cast properly with it... maybe 25m tops?? also using pilchards as bait... any thoughts?? also, nexus, ive bought a couple of green squid rigs now... not sure how to use them though, just chuck them out and reel in slowly?? thanks again all!!! because of the crappy weather i might not be going tonight, have to see... have uni tomorrow, feeling suicidal now.... anyway, will update after my next trip!!
  9. hi all!!! first fish report!!! which makes sense, because in all my trips, i havnt caught anythign worth mentioning went to yarra bay tonight, have to say, apart from the lack of any lighting, the place is very nice... very little wind, no waves, nice quiet beach.... using a 3.6m shimano rod, 20lb line, half pilchards, gamakatsu baitholders, as well as some very crap skills, i caught a nice whiting and a nicer flathead!! woohoo!! finally, i dont need to eat out of the dumpster anymore, can have some fish with protein!!! anyway, for anyone interested, i reckon this is a pretty nice spot, although the main disadvantage is there is very little light, and its very hard to see anything... i think i mistook my rod for my brother quite a few times tonight, ended up talking to my rod for ages before realising it wasnt answering back... anyway, anyone wanna come and try it out i will be there tomolo night again, trying to get more fishies to supplement my student style diet of nothing and bits of gravel... check eeeeeeeeeet
  10. jewgaffer thank you very much for the tip on that spot... went tonight, and although it wasnt firing, we still bagged a 35cm sand whiting, and a 40cm flathead!!! well, actually both were caught by my bro, and none were caught by me, as i was too trying to pull my car out of the sand... i actually drove it on to flood some lights over where we were, cause we couldnt see anything... the flathead was off the beach, and the whiting was off the rock jetty can i ask though, how far should i be casting?? i went in the night so didnt wade out... plus my crap skills, probably cast 25m with my 3.6m rod, and about 0m with my 1.95m rod... i think if i cast out a bit further would be better?? and what tide times would you recommend? also, is 20lb line too heavy?? i think maybe thats why im missing the bites!! anyway thanks again for the tip... haha, ill be there again tomorrow night!!!
  11. hey all!!! well first of all thanks for the replies, i really appreciate it!! and will certainly visit fishfinder soon enough, hopefully get some comments on my gear to make sure its all correct whats going on jewgaffer?? thanks heaps for the tip eh!! well, first things first, sorry i dont know a Danny Lowe, the reason i chose my nick is because my name is daniel, and i thought danilo sounds sweeet (it's the serbian version of daniel).... i wasnt around since the 70's, and i actually come from kiwiland... oh what joy. jewgaffer, i cant really pinpoint where yarra bay is.... or at least the exact spots you are recommending.... would you mind pinpointing them for me?? thanks heaps ya im planning on going tonight, high tide is 11 30 which is sweeet for a saturday night cant wait!! btw i really would like some flathead!!!! they look like such interesting things and ive never caught any in kiwiland!! could i ask for some recommendations on my gear as well??? should i use a 8lb or 20lb?? what kind of rig?? what kinda bait?? should i reel in or just cast it and leave it??? thanks heaps!!!
  12. hey dude i recommend yo zuri hybrid lines... really good stuff i use the 20 pound and managed to reel in a 1.3m port jackson the other day, helluva fight and i think if it wasnt for the line i wouldnt have had a chance... so yeah ever after ive been a keen fan
  13. Hey fishos, this is my first post! just wanted to ask if anyone knows any good spots close to the maroubra area??? i generally prefer some beach or wharf fishing, because i dont have any rock shoes and its dangerously slippery so yeah....but if its a good spot ill still go though.... ive been to i think what they call the 'merc', which is a rock ledge near the bondi golf course, ive also been to watsons bay quite a few times, and to my complete dismay i havnt caught bloody anything... well nothing nice anyway... any advice would be appreciated eh... i have a 3.6m rod, okuma 10000fs reel, as well as a 1.95m rod and just a tiny crappy reel... i use yozuri 8 pound hybrid for the smaler rod and 20 pound for the bigger one... have got gamakatsu hooks on the lines, and have been giving the fishies pillies, squid, chicken gut and prawns as charity for quite a while now.... anyone know how i can actually catch something??? thanks heaps!
