  1. He did from a distance but 2 old timers from the caravan park who were watching got out into the weeds where it was stuck and comfirmed it as a jewie. Then the panic set in.
  2. Hey trev, there was abit of swell on sunday and some real good waves around aswell but the furthest i went was probably dobroyd point so it didnt affect me too much. Things are pretty busy atm but i will definately get out one morning this weekend. Will be an early though ie, 4am kickoff. Maybe we'll get both boats out or something................
  3. Hey all, for all those narra lakes dudes, my mate hooked a jewy just down from the caravan park boat ramp on a peeled prawn (or the fish that ate the peeled prawn) and fought it for 35mins on bream gear walking up and down the shore. It got tangeled up in all the weed and flapped around and broke free. From what i could gather was definately not a soapy, sounded atleast 10kg!
  4. Hey all, Headed out this morning with my mum to give her a look at the harbour and have a nice breakfast and maybe do a little fishing if she didnt mind! Headed out at roseveille to a beautiful day ahead, I then showed her the scenery at afew squid spots and rustled up afew squid, she particularly liked it when me and the side of my head got inked! she also liked the shacks at "shack bay". We headed over to manly to grap some coffees and i found this guy floating in the water at the wharf, he was flapping around upsidedown so i scooped him up, he seemed ok so i put him back in and he started flapping around upsidedown again! , ohwell what can u do. We headed over to reef beach for some breakfast, zoomed back into middle harbour to try and show her some kingys, this guy had a date with a downrigger! The water was terribly brown so i thought things might be a little tricky. Eventually found some action, Looks like bait and kingys i thought, soon enough the downrigger went off, Lucky for this guy they changed they size limit! Again i found the fish not to excited and the limited squid i had got picked away very quick. Mum nearly hooked up too which would have been hilarious wouldnt have known what hit her! Still a bit quiet but a great day out all in all, oldsalty
  5. Would u agree that dirty water is no good for pelagics like kings?
  6. Sounds like the running sinker deal might explain it i think! u can catch some small kings on those 9inch models so i suppose a decent flatty would have a go aswell, might be like chomping down a garfish for them!

    Flathead

Hey all, A couple years ago i caught a nice big flatty in bantry bay, sydney harbour on a squidgy shad. When i brought him in i noticed he had something hanging out his mouth, when i checked it out i was surprised to find a full 9 inch sluggo stick bait on a worm hook lodged in the roof of his mouth with some leader hanging off it. The lure also had plenty of weed growing off it meaning it must have been there for quite some time which explained the long but skinny build of the fish.I removed the lure and released the fish. My question is does any one use these or have heard of anyone using these lures on flattys? Not weighted stick baits but the full 9inch sluggos u put on a worm hook for kingys. The leader hanging from the lure in the fishes mouth seemed quite light, say 15-20 lbs which makes think it may have been intended for a flatty and not a kingy. I always think of how that lure got there.......... Any thoughts appreciated
  8. Just a thought if your intersted, this lure is a squidgy fish 120 mm with a squidgy jig head to match. Me and my friends used to hunt flattys in the lake and this lure really killed it, ive never been a big advocate for certain lure colours but they liked green over other colours. Dont let the size fool u as it caught little fellas as well as monsters up to 80cm. Should suit ur gear well to as it casts a mile and is actually a bit heavy for the really light gear. I never used to go too heavy on the leaders untill i lost two monsters in a row on the same day on this lure on leader as thick as 20 pound! so somewhere around 20 is advizable. It definately helps to slice a flat edge at the front of the plastic and before u snug it to the hook add a little super glue, this will prevent the plastic sliding away from the jig head over time which can be annoying. one more thing, all my big narra lake flattys have come from the month of november!
  9. hey all, Went out for a look on saturday avo to see if we could find some kings that had been reported lurking around middle harbour. After a couple of unsuccessful trips in october and some crappy weather i didnt have my hopes up. Headed of to round up some squid and found them in ones and twos at afew different spots with the wind making it quite tricky. My mate with a better one With about 5 squid in the well we headed into middle harbour. We started downrigging and hooked up soon enough using a whole live squid. The fish faught up high in the water column and when near the boat and did a semi jump and manage to throw the two hook rig! I didnt get a proper look at it but suspect it was a salmon. Damn, where were the kingys! Hit a couple more spots for no luck and had a real battle seeing anything at all going on on the sounder. Finally heard that familiar knock of something banging up the down rigger so i pulled it out of gear and the hook finally set. I pulled it out of the holder and gave it to my mate to land our first king of the season. He just barely made the new 65cm limit but an important fish none the less! The were more fish there but we found them not to agressive and couldnt crack the code as to what they wanted. They mouthed and harrased our baits without hooking up and werent to aggressive on whole live squid or strips on the down rigger or drifting. Another boat near us pinned afew on heads which we were out of. After a couple of missed hookups it got dark and we headed in. In the end it was only the one fish but the start of what should hopefully be many more to come, Bring it on!
  10. havent fished narra lakes for ages as i normally get out in the harbour but got out there yesterday as i live just next to it. Have been happy to see the entrance stay open for much longer than i thought it would but when i actually launched and got on the water it was a different lake from when i last fished it. There was crystal clear saltwater rushing in with the tide and u could see the bottom in 12 foot of water easy, normally u couldnt see 2 feet in front of u! It looked really healthy! Anyway, me and my mate decided to go hunt some flathead as we had a good run of monsters there this time last year. It started raining as soon as we got on the water but we persited anyway, after a couple hours i had caught 3 flattys from 36 to 43cm and a tailor on plastics. My mate had lucked out so far, he hates when i out fish him and he joked that the next one i hooked, would i let him bring it in!He wasnt serious ofcourse. It was wet and getting dark so i pulled the pin and motored home but i could tell on my mates face he wanted to keep trying.I said we should have afew casts over the flats at the boat ramp before we go in as the flattys tend to get up there in the shallows on dusk. My mate was still keen and casted at the flats consitently so i flicked a couple too but all i wanted was a hot shower! Ofcourse when ur not trying u hook up! so to rub it in i instantly offered the loaded rod to him and to my surprise he took it off me without thinking twice. He boated a nice flathead of around 55cm, and had no trouble claiming it as his own!We both went home with smiles on our faces. Sorry but didnt take the camera cause of the rain.

  12. Hey all, Went out early this morning to find some kings. Due to an electrical problem the sounder and my livewell pumps were on the blink which would make things a bit tricky. Got to the spit at about 4.30 am to find afew boats jigging for squid, tried for half an hour for no result so took off to find somewhere more productive, hit about half dozen different spots for about the same amount of squid ranging from small to quite sizable. Pulled in at manly wharf for breakfast, hot coffee, bacon and egg pie and crumbed chicken pieces on a crisp morning on the water....... When we finished we decided to go hit the kings. Without the sounder we decided to downrig around spots we were familiar with so we stuck to the markers in the main harbour, hit the wedding cakes, clifton gardens and various other markers for no result, had no idea of water temp and couldnt look for bait or arches, really made it tricky.Headed back into middle harbour and trolled a fresh little squid all through seaforth then over to sugarloaf for a big zero. Headed over to pickering point and dropped the pick and sent down a few diff baits at afew diff depths for absolutely nothing before heading in. I didnt see any surface action all day either. A beautiful day on the water but where were the kings? Anyone find any this weekend? oldsalty
  13. i never tried it cause it always seemed wrong but thought i might be missing out on something........suppose theres only one way to find out!
  14. Yeah mate.....................55lb is perfect on that model, ive had 5 people on board and it still motored along easy.............that set up is a pleasure to use in calm water. oldsalty
  15. im more looking at if they troll well on the down rigger, strips and whole squid look pretty natural trolling but not sure about heads?
  16. Mate, ive never had to use this guy but had his card for a while.....company is" oznautica..on the water.." name: Rares badrea(zorro) PH. 0407 173 423 or info@oznautica.com Oldsalty
  17. aha..........i was in your shoes about 2 years ago with exact same boat, looks like we fit it out the same too! Hornets are good little rigs..................ive sure flogged mine! Just curious if u dont mind me asking the price. I ordered similar to u with side console, live well, X135 lowrance, 40 2st yam,rod locker,55lb min kota + mount for around 20 grand! that was 2 years ago............. oldsalty
  18. Hey all, All u harbour downriggers might be able to help me here. I always put whole squid and squid strips on the d.r but was wondering can u put a squid head on it? anyone ever do it? oldsalty
  19. Mate, I had a minn kota 55lb riptide that would need recharging every 3-5 outings depending on how much i used it, but if your using it as your main source of power having 2 batteries may be a good idea, plenty for a day on the water. Also keep it in your house not your garage, people like to steal them
  20. I often find when they are being difficult and feeding on tiny bait like eyes they will ignore even the smallest metals and when they hook up the trebles are so small they spit em pretty easy. In this situation i find bigger offerings like 6-9 inch stickbaits like sluggos hook up, i dont know why but they do. Also when there slurping off the top a small popper around 3 inches will often entice a strike. oldsalty
  21. HEy all, I know how effective live or freshly caught squid is in the harbour for the kings but i was wondering how it goes after u freeze it, i never tried , is it as good. I know the packet the packet stuff is a waste of time but i spose this method of freezing will help when u spend all morning russling up afew zoidbergs(squid). How does it rate???
  22. Mate, Im a bit of spastic on the pc at the moment to put up a diagram but i am learning. Not to hard to explain though , it works on the principle that if u troll a heavy enough weight at a slow enough speed it will troll underwater , the weight could be anything but a shiny knife jig is more appealling and streamlined, attached a little further behind is a live bait! i think about 300grams is a desired weight for the jig. ur familiar with d.r , im sure u already know this............... anyway, grab ur mainline, attach heavyduty snap swivel, pref ball bearing, attach to front of jig, attach another swivel to back of jig, then attach a couple metres or so of leader down to ur hook.Thats it, i havent tried it but you would think it would reduce the line twist. How do u get diagrams up anyway?
  23. Ahah...................swivels on both ends...... ofcourse! I like the idea if a hook up occurs on the normal down rigger of leaving the kniferigger(new name)out to flutter a squid down to his mates for another hook up. Will try again on my next outing, Thanks guys
