  1. Well done. JB? Off Honeymoon bay?

Did you head to any other spots? Anything happening?

    Mike

basically traversed the whole of jb to get what we did with the blue jigs the killers yozuri ones!!!

we fished the banks for not much which was a damn surprise. lots of bait school;s about.. but the winds stuffed us and I didnt get out of bed nice and early to beat them..... we landed some flatties off 7 mile beach..... some nice reds were landed as we checked thr boat ramp today as we left ( 5 counted caught by a local with the biggest around 5 kgs ) ....

but pretty quiet for flatties and kings.... we jigged the banks every day for nil....plenty of fish on the finder. God hates me..

  2. Hi Raiders, Hutcho and I went out off Broken Bay early today, we tried West Reef for not much, then we headed up to Copacabana to maybe find the salmon, but they were no where to be found, so we potted back towards Box Head ,we stopped at a reefy spot just off Little beach, this was a bit of fun , we caught some crimson banded wrasse, a few sergeant bakers, small reddies, Hutcho won that bit with most fish caught , I got the biggest with a huge male sergeant, he must have about 60 cms or so. Hutcho did eventually get a 35cm pan size reddie and we kept a couple of 6 spine leather jackets.

The day was great , the wind was weird though, NE out wide , W in close..

Anyway thats it some more pics to look at as well as one of me and 2 girlfriends.. Cheers People..

good on ya ray...... I just came back from 5 days at bawley point....... great surf but sod all fish.....managed to hand spear some occies for hopefully kings/reds at the banks down culburra ray...skinning them is a chore though....

  3. It was a beautiful morning as we left the Water Street ramp. I was a bit excited as it was my first trip out for quite a while.

    post-4381-1220266183_thumb.jpg

We weren’t in any hurry, so we thought we’d troll down the coast for a bit, but there wasn’t any action. It didn’t really matter as it was just great to be on the water again.

    post-4381-1220266217_thumb.jpg

Passed a few people fishing off the cliffs. Sure is a long way to pull up a fish, let alone the walk in! Give me Pick-A-Box Syd’s boat any day - much more comfortable!

    post-4381-1220266272_thumb.jpg

We decided to try a few drifts. The flathead were scattered few and far between. Anyway, it was a beautiful morning, light breeze, no swell, and we managed a keeper flathead every half hour or so, and most importantly, there weren’t any jackets! However, we did catch a few under size snapper. Amazingly, they fought more than most of the flathead.

The wind picked up around midday so we headed back to Cronulla for a few drifts off the beach.

All in all, a great day! Twelve flatties 36-48cm. A great feed for both our families.

Pick-A-Box Syd was grinning despite his crook leg.

    And those fillets were incredible!

    Cheers

  4. HI FELLOW RAIDERS....ME AND MY BRO ARE HEADED DOWN TO JERVIS BAY FOR A COUPLA DAYS DURING SEPTEMBER..... I WENT THERE ONCE BEFORE AND THE PLACE WAS GREAT.. BUT SADLY SOD ALL FISH.. THANKS

  5. The missus has class on Monday nights so lately I've been flicking some squid jigs in the harbour while waiting to pick her up.

I've been going for a few weeks now and haven't gotten any squid.

But last night, while using my brand new Yamashita squid jig I managed to get 3 in about 2 hours of jigging! :yahoo:

They were all around 6inchs long and would have made a great bait whole.

I got home at 9pm and quickly checked the tides.. there was a low of around 10pm.....

hmmm i thought.. one week before the new moon, run up tide around 11pm, freshly caught squid......

    Lets do it!

despite having to be at work at 9am this morning, having some fresh caught squid gave me enthusiasm to sacrifice sleep for a jewie.

I got down to my usual Sydney harbour spot at 11pm.. Cast out both rods and waited.

It was very quiet.. wound both baits in at 12 to check on em. One had the head missing, the other had a few chunks missing from pickers.

Cast them back out and left them there till 1:30am.

    No action.

Packed up at 1:30 and went home.. seemed to have some really small pickers as most of the squid was still on the hook...

Drove home and got into bed around 3... slept a few hours and came into work......... now thinking about when I should do it again :biggrin2:

    Chris

Mate as a general rule one hours jew fishing equates to a pound of jew... you may get the biggie one day so prepare yourself.

  6. Went out on my own from Rosevile about 6.15 am. I was the only car in the parking ground, made me think I got the forecast wrong.

There was a bit of a long low swell so I didnt bother trolling close to the headlands and headed straight out to the flathead grounds.

Within seconds of hitting the bottom I got a nice marbled flathead but then it went quite for a while before the bite started again. It was quite a nice day apart from a bit of swell which made it a bit lumpy from North Head to Manly but once clear of the bounce from the cliffs it smoothed out. The wind dropped off so much there was not much drift but the fish were consistant.post-3961-1219737420_thumb.jpg

Only one fish was undersized although I dont bother with them less than about 38cm.

Finished with 4 Eastern Blue Spot and 5 Marbled Flathead (the marbled are by far the better eating fish), and a couple of good sized Morwong (45cm and 42cm). The biggest flathead was 53cm, and the smallest 38cm, most were 45-50cm.

Got a couple of Red Gurnard. Got a couple a few weeks ago, one Spiny and one Red, but again the Red was much better eating. They are a bundle of spines and sharp gills but have a firm white flesh. The spines are reputed to be venemous.post-3961-1219737501_thumb.jpg

Dropped a plate sized snapper and headed home about 11am.

    post-3961-1219737250_thumb.jpg

NICE CATCH MATE.....AT NEARLY $40.00 A KILO FOR SKINNED LIZARDS ( LAST TIME I CHECKED IT WAS ) YOU DID WELL....ENJOY YOUR FEAST.. ARE THOSE WRETCHED JACKETS STILL ABOUT

  8. Hi All,

My apologies for the late report. I went out on saturday and Sunday last weekend for a shot at the kings of botany bay. This is the outcome…

Day 1 Saturday - Went out on Saturday and decided to take the 30 size overheads and some rapala lures for a troll of the headlands and the coast line to cronulla. Beautiful conditions out there . Trolled out past cape bank then across the mouth of Botany Bay and down to boat harbor. Did not get a single strike tolling but was awesome to get out there. I must say Australia is a beautiful country…makes me proud to aussie (oi, oi, oi ). After about an hour and a half of trolling, I decided to go back in, get some livies and downrig along Molineux Point. I only managed one small yakka so I put him down to 40 foot on the down rigger and headed along Moli point. Within 5 minutes I was on. Good fight and got a 72cm King. There was dinner. Headed back to the boat ramp by 11:30am.

Day 2 – Sunday – Headed out at 7:00am and the weather was looking grim. Went to my live bait grounds and found it tough going to get only 5 yakka’s. Picked up anchor and started down rigging along Moli point again. Within 5 minutes of down rigging my reel (14000 spheros, 60lb braid and 80lb leader) started screaming in a way that I have never heard it. Grabbed the rod from the rod holder and began winding up the rigger bomb. The fish did not put up a fight at all. I started winding the fish and I could feel the weight of it…. It was big. I was trying what they call on the “kingfish secrets” DVD the gentle gentle technique . It only works until the kingie gets to the surface. I tell you it was the biggest king I have ever seen. Definetly over a meter. Once that kingie saw me and my gaff, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ it went for the most wildest run I have ever had. The fight went for a good 20 minutes. As I tried to stop the second last run, my hand hit the anti reverse switch and the handle flew around backwards and lightning speed and cracked me on the thumb…The pain was unbelievable but I was determined to bring it in. It went for the last run and found the rocky edge at moli point…Busted off. I let out the biggest scream (my apologies to the gentleman and his family on the kevlacat). Reloaded a yakka and down rigged again and again and again only to be busted off by hoodlums. So I decided to go to one of the channel marker and fish for trevally and bream. Got 6 trevally, a 32 cm snapper and 1 bream to 27cm. I caught a lot of snapper just 1cm undersize on Hawkesbury prawns. At that point my thumb was killing me and I headed home. After cleaning my boat and all my gear, I went to St George hospital and found that my thumb is fractured. There is no better way to break a bone that on a big kingfish. Lying in bed that night I was still pumped about my day and can’t wait for the next weekend….Rain hail or shine

    Cheers

    HARDCORE MAN....... #########G HARD CORE!

  9. Went back to my usual spot today for a fish. My spot didn't disappoint. After a slow start, ended up catching 5 bream, 3 mullet and 2 great flatties. The flatties were 52cm & 57cm. Plenty of solid bites after the turn of the tide. Hooked and lost a decent sized fish. Caught the flatties on ganged pilchards.Just as well I was using ganged hooks, the leader was light and would've had no chance against those flattie teeth. Took home the 2 flatties, and 2 mullet which will be great for those Roseville jews.

great catch mate... the flatties im sure will go down well.... the background looks promising for a night time bash?

  10. Bobfish joined me for the trip this morning. It was a bit foggy but with the GPS and taking it easy we found the Spit and tried for squid under the bridge but it was running out pretty solid and after losing a jig on a plylon we decided Dobryod would be better.

Bob showed me up by catching 3 downrig sized squid while I missed out. I really must not be lousy and buy some of those small Yozuri jigs.

Did a couple of runs with bibbed lures around Dobryod but no takers, then downrigged those beaut squid around all the markers and bouys in in front of middle harbour, but no takers despite good showings on the sounder.

Then downrigged from Old mans hat to North Head for zero, trolled around North Headfor the same.

Finally fished DYwide and Long Reef wide for 4 flathead, 3 good sized sweep, and a just legal snapper.

Not a good catch but the sea was dead calm so it was a nice day out.

T'was a great day today....... nice catch there..... not many boats out either

  11. up at 4.30 yesterday morning for a 5 am start. head staight to parsley bay to try and pick up a few live herring. zilch although i caught an undersized trevally and the blokes fishing up on the rock got 1 at 35cm have never seen trevally that far up the hawkesbury before  . anyway onto juno picked up a 30cm bream and 45cm flatty . got bored there after a while onto potonga and over to my secret weed spot(was planing on going for some blackies in the next few days). had a call from a mate who was over at west head having a drift so i went over to join then. second road in the water had been there for maybe a few minutes tops with a ganged white bait.BANG. wasnt sure what the hell it was but it fought bloody hard got it to the surface saw the white underside dam a ray had a proper look nope 38cm flounder  got him to the net and droped just as the net scooped him up.lucky. kept drifting and got a small yakka chucked himback out on 10kg jewie rod. first run struck up to nothing. brought him in heads gone. back out with the yakka. second run struck up to nothing. only meaty body section left. 3rd run lucky hooked the 50cm tailor  my mate in his boat caught one as well so i decided to have a troll round the head ended up with 5 more tailor all to about 40-50cm in under half an hour. head back to the ramp to clean the fish checking he witch hats. nothing. only 1 bluey. oh well cant have em all. good day on the water with plenty of fish caught.

  12. Hi Everyone

Just posting a couple of shots of my Mate's Blue eye that he got last Friday at browns.

Largest one went 28.5 KG on the Lie Detector.

He also cubed for a couple of hours for 0 results

He will tell you more "IF" he has time to look at this post ??

Mate a truly champion catch there......me and my brother are keen to hit browns... we have a deep sea winch ( manual ).... I keep hearing about these frightening snags where 500-600 metres of braid goes missing ( shivers up the spine ). Any tips about avoiding them apart from the abvious ones like lighter line attached to sinkers etc>>>> currents would play a big part i suspect.. any info would be good.

  13. My mate Pick-A-Box Syd had promised fellow Raider Peter Koch a trip out fishing before Peter returns to hospital on Tuesday for more treatment.

Conditions were perfect as we headed out of Port Hacking on Saturday.

We tried a couple of drifts off Wanda for eight flathead before Peter suggested trying a “special spot” off Kurnell.

Well, first drop Peter pulls up a nice mowie. One thing I can tell you for sure, Peter doesn’t let his other problems, no matter how serious they are, interfere with his fishing! He certainly knows what he’s doing and he keeps going no matter how he feels. Once again, his mowie proved to be the fish of the day.

    post-4381-1210500255_thumb.jpg

Unfortunately that was the only “good” fish anyone caught. However, there were plenty of sweep and Peter’s son Ollie showed that it was easier to bring them up two or three at a time. Mixed in were some annoying mado, wrasse and large bakers. :1badmood:

The sun was just setting as we made our way back into Port Hacking after a great day's fishing with good mates.

    post-4381-1210500711_thumb.jpg

We ended up with a good feed for all our families and the sweep will be smoked soon. (Don’t knock sweep till you’ve tried them smoked! Delicious!)

Also, my thanks to Mrs Pick-A-Box Syd for cooking up the flattie fillets. They were great!

I’m sure all Raiders wish Peter the best over the next few weeks and hopefully he’ll be back out with us soon showing us (again) how to catch the big ones.

    Cheers

    PeterS

GOOD ON YA PETE.. YOULL BE BACK OUT THERE AGAIN

  14. Good feed there drummo

You certainly made good use of the salmon

Did you cover much territory or stay close to the heads?

    Cheers

    Peter

Drifted and moved around a bit.. stayed in about 35 to 40 metres.. drifted south towards the lighthouse for most of the flatties.

  15. Fished Hawkesbury landbased last night on the change of tide. Got a lot of hits on the fresh squid strips before the tide starts to run out, caught this little 65cm soapie. Then everything just went quiet except a few Hawkes breams but no more jewies.

MATE YOU CERTAINLY GET AMONGST THEM.. NICE JEWIE..

  16. PT STEPHENS A GREAT MARLIN SEASON

Life has been very busy for the past few months and we have not had time to update the reports, we are back in the”big smoke” now.

Both Broadbill and Billfisher have fished the most spectacular marlin grounds of Pt Stephens (100 nautical miles north of Sydney) since mid January and whilst we are back in Sydney now, it is always a little nostalgic leaving our second home.

Summarizing the season, both boats worked 60 days each and we tagged and released 108 marlin that may sound pretty successful but in fact, going by previous seasons, was a little mediocre.

In early January the fish were every where, big mahis, striped marlin (Broady’s best day was eight stripes), blacks and even the odd blue marlin , however by late February the fish were thinning out with catches of one’s and two’s per day, being the average

Then came mid March and we were all wondering where to go to catch a fish it really got tough with one marlin a day being a great day.

The problem that we all have fishing these most productive marlin grounds is that we have come to expect multiple bites per day and when that drops to one or two it seems as though the fish have scattered, but if we were fishing any other waters getting two shots a day we would accept that as a good day, such is the reputation of the great fishery.

April did not improve that much, like it generally does at Pt Stephens, however it did improve marginally.

Glenn and myself fished the Kenworth Tournament which traditionally has been held in Bermagui. There were 11 charter boats fished it over 4 days with 14 marlin released and that blew previous records out the window from down south.

Once again still not brilliant for Pt Stephens but the organisers were thrilled so I guess we’ll see them back next year. Broady and Billfisher caught four marlin in the event.

All fish were switched off two teasers, it was a better deal to cover lots of ground because of the scarceness of marlin. There were a handful of jelly bean tuna caught as well.

It was disappointing that April did not fire up like previous seasons, but there’s nothing any of us mere mortals can do to change that.

I recall in ’97 catching 18 in a day in late April but then again that was the greatest of all marlin seasons, a season when we caught 248 on Broadbill. Catches of 10’s and 12 were common every day. Will the glory days return? Yes! I believe they will but when I would not predict.

GREAT REPORT.... ME AND MY BROTHER RELIGIOUSLY ATTEND PORT STEPHENS AROUND MID MARCH... THIS YEAR WE HAD A GOOD TIME...HEAPS OF MAHI MAHI AROUND THE FADS ( BEFORE THEY DISAPPEARED) AND I GOT MY FIRST MARLIN HOOK UP... ON A 12' EVIL LURE... BUT BEING A NOVICE TO THIS KIND OF FISHING I DIDNT CHECK MY LINE AND THERE MUST HAVE BEEN A NICK IN THE MONO AND I LOST EVERYTHING.... PLAYED HIM FOR ABOUT 5 MINS THOUGH AND SAW HIM COME UP TO THE BACK OF THE BOAT TO GRAB THE LURE... IT BLEW MY MIND!!

  17. Well done guys on all your efforts great fish too

GREAT PICS MATE.. THAT BLACK JEW LOOKS GREAT!

  18. Went out of kiama on tuesday in search of a few blueye cod . We decided to head south looking at the sounder and plotter untill we found somewhere that looked promising . Caught a few fresh striped tuna which were a bonus as nothing beats fresh bait . Found a nice spot on the shelf in around 500 metres of water and decided to have a drop . So down go the baits in search of blueye , it doesn't take long and both lines are on . our first drop and were on , one of the fish seems like a bass groper and is fighting non stop . Now our lines are only 40 metres from the boat with good fish on both . When out of nowhere a pack of six KILLER WHALES decides to eat our fish like its a seaworld show .... :mad3::mad3: All we end up with is bare hooks and lost fish. . We decide to drop again and both lines are on . Now we are still in awe at what just happened and what we just witnessed. our lines are coming up from the depths again and when our fish are 40 meters from the boat our fish are attacked again by KILLER WHALES all we end up with is one head and a mangled blueye. . . It is now decided that its time to move before we are on the meal list :1fishing1::1fishing1: . We decide to move spots and end up with a feed of blueye and sea perch by the end of the day and an amazing fishing story to tell... :1fishing1:

Heres a few pics :1fishing1: cheers Dogtooth.....

    BREAK OUT THE DOWNRIGGER!

  20. After a bodysurf down at south maroubra I decided to unthaw in the afternoon sun down at a secret flattie sport down botany way. Caught this one on a gary glitter squidgie.. First cast and I was on.... Let him go to fight another day.
