  1. I lived for 6 months in the kangaroo valley in 2002 and in all the time I spent fishing therte I only caught one single bass, I caught it with earthworm on a hook below a float. But youd probably do better with lures. There are also big carp in some places

    Avoca

Fished with a little chrome lure off the rocks at Avoca and hooked up two really nice salmon, fantastic fight, but then each time when I got them to the rocks the line broke as I tried to haul them out. I really need to buy a landing net. This was just as a huge school was passing by, about 60 metres off shore. Anyway, The council opened up the lagoon a few days ago, so I took a rod down there to the entrance last night and cast out a whole pilchard, after a few casts I hooked up to a big salmon, brought him to shore and let him back in the water. Hooked another but broke the line, hooked another and let the line go slack and he got off. and hooked another on the last cast, just using the head of a pilchard, and kept him for dinner because the hook was deep in his gut. There was too much meat on him for just me and dad to eat on our own and we ended up wasting quite a bit which makes me feel guilty. But theyre a beautiful fish and they put up a really sensational fight, jumping clear of the water and that. I just want to say though that if your fishing in the lake itself, it would be better if you release any sort of estuary fish you get there because when the lake was drained, I went for a kayak around to the back end of the lake and found hundreds of dead baby fish that had got trapped in puddles as the water receded and died as the water in the puddles evaporated, I saw heaps of dead baby bream just a couple of cm long, even a few estuary perch and lots of baby mullet about 5 cm long. I found a few puddles crowded with fish that had still survived and spent most of the day scooping them out and carrying them to the water but there were so many more that died. I reckon just leave the fish there until it gets restocked.
  3. I bumped into this Asian bloke down there who was fishing with weed, I asked him if he was getting anything, he said yeah he has been getting good blackfish but not today. I say, luderick? He says no the other type. Thats where I heard from, so thats all I know. And Im telling you, that fish bit through my hook, Im not lying.
  4. I dunno bluecod, Theres still alot of fish I havent caught. Never caught a jewfish, a bit of a step up from luderick, but youve gotta be optimistic.
  5. Ive got a cheap rex hunt fillet knife from K mart. But I cant keep it from rusting. I wash it in fresh water and scrub it with some steel wool after every outing but it still gets rust spots on it. Is this the right way to maintain it or am I forgetting something?
  6. I was down at Avoca rocks a while ago and a kid was catching crabs in the rockpool whilst his dad was fishing. The kid caught a quite big rock crab as far as rock crabs go, and took it over to show his dad. It was a female with a whole lot of roe under its tail. So the dad pulled out his knife and for no reason at all scraped the eggs out from under the crabs tail and threw them away and then dropped the crap and trod on it. Unbelievable.
  7. Just got back from down at the same spot at cremorne. I endured the torrential downpour and this time I hooked him and got him to shore. nice fish.
  8. What do black drummer taste like? because I have heard that people are getting them down at Cremorne too.
  9. Well I went down to Cremorne Point this arvo to give it a try for black fish. I did everything just as I have read, streamer weed wrapped around the hook, bout 1.5 metres between the hook and float. Few casts and then I noticed the float dip, but I striked too early and the fish let go. Next cast the float dipped and I left it and then it went down and stayed down so I struck and had my first luderick, pulling it into shore it was a big fish, about 30cm and fat as, but just as I was lifting it out onto the rocks it bit through the hook and splashed back into the water. Thats right, it bit through the hook, that sly little bastard, what are you supposed to do to stop that happening? Unbelievable, Ihave to go back again tomorrow, I have unfinished business with that fish.
  10. I was told by my uncle, When he was growing up he used to catch, scale and clean them, and take them around and give them to all the neighbours because they were such bad eating.
  11. Where are the best spots for luderick in middle harbour or on the north shore. Ive never targeted this species before because Ive always been told that theyre rotton eating, is this true? and also any tips for catching them? Is it important wahat kind of weed you use?
  12. Anyone got a number for the fisheries inspectors?

    Avoca Lagoon

Whats the best bait to use in there. Probably prawns do you reckon? I noticed a real deep hole that was signed as a dangerous drop off for swimmers, right down at the far East Nor East end of the lake when I went kayaking on it once, looked like it could be promising. Just about everywhere else looked too thick with that algae sort of stuff to fish. Except in the channels round the island and near the road bridge, also in that inlet that goes off to the north. I dont know if its worth trying with such good fishing at the beach just across the way.

wheres the best spot for redfin? My mate commented that right at theside of the dam wall where the water was deep and still looked the place, And wheres good for bass too? I bought a little black and gold grasshopper type plug lure but couldnt cast it further than about 3 metres cos it is so light. I dont really have any experience fishing with lures, can anyone tell me how I am supposed to cast a really light lure? I have it rigged straight to the line with a swivel, I dont know if thats the right way, there is no weight, but I am sure you have to be able to cast it further than 2 to 3 metres. Would this type of lure work for redfin? Its supposed to be made specifically for bass. My mate also said he used to catch redfin using the gills of other fish as bait, so theres a use for carp.

    Manly Dam

Yeah, just down by those lilly pads near the dam wall. I casted a rod out for a bit and got nothing and then took some cornflakes, bit of bread and some clay and mixed it up and chuched it in. Immediately carp started surfacing everywhere eating the stuff off the surface. I cast one line out that was just some bread with no float or sinker. Caught one on this. Also cast out a lump of dough on a float and that was successful too. But they stopped biting towards midday.

    Manly Dam

I just threw them in the garbage bin on my way out. I dont want the garden smelling of rotting fish and I dont own or like cats so had no use for them. ^Your not allowed to let them go but, so if anyone finds any other use for them let me know.

Whats fishing like in Manly Dam. Have read a few reports and sounds good for alot of freshwater fish but wanted to get some of you blokes opinions if any of you have been. What do you find works best up there? Lures, bread? Wet a line by the Spit Bridge today, very quiet, Except for those juvenile snapper, I swear they follow me around.
  22. Hi, Can anyone tell me some good spots for squid in middle harbour? Also the best general fishing spots from the shore in middle harbour? Cheers, have a good weekend.
  23. Just got back from a three day trip on the hawkesbury. And nothing really to get excited about. I tried for jews with some squid and small tailor that I caught but got absolutely nothing. Every single bait smaller than a whole fish was taken by those tiny baby snapper. We literally caught hundreds of those snapper about 5 cm long. They seemed to follow us around. Only decent fish we got was a monster flathead that bit through the line and got away as we were fumbling around for a landing net. We did catch some good sized crabs and squid though. Also some leatherjackets. Yeah, like I said, pretty disappointing really. No big fish. But still had a good time, Its a beaut part of Australia.
  24. When using squid as bait for jewfish do you bait the whole squid on the hook or cut it into pieces?

    Squid

Also, What does everyone find to be the most effective jig. Those "lure" type ones or baited ones?
