For large kingfish i'd say the 9inch sluggo. They do get followed by smaller ones but they don't usually tend to be game enough to have a go at them. I find the bigger kings usually sit deeper on the markers so i like to either cast just past it and sink it to the bottom then rip it back or go directly over the marker and rip it back from the bottom.
Could always try jigging as well, heard of a few people catching kings in the harbour doing it when they've been fussy.

Geez, wish i knew that spot, they are top LB fish mate, don't see many snapper even close to that size pulled out the harbour very often. Well done

Hi guys,
Next January we are looking at booking a trip to NZ for some fishing and a nice holiday, right now we are looking at the bay of islands as while we are after some big kings we would like a bit of variety as well.
So anyone that has had past experiences there or other parts of NZ with good fishing i'd like to hear from you.
Any recommendations on gear to take would be good and if you know some good charter companies over there if you could PM me their details it would be much appreciated.

Hi joel,
I've got symmetre's and exceler plus reels and they are fairly good reels for the price. If you are looking for a reel that will last you a long time then definitely check out the Penn Applause reels, they have a full metal body and are tough as and i've caught plenty of kings on them before. They are fairly cheap as well, you should be able to pick one up for $120-$140.

Not sure if I believe this fully. The 1st pic looks OK, but the 2nd looks doctored (spelling?). How does a Barra, especially 1 that size just sit on the pram like that?

Yes I think they were Frigates.
Any tips on how to catch them?
Sounds like they would have been frigates, they feed and move very fast which makes them difficult to catch but really small metal slices would be your best bet and try to see which way they are moving as they feed and get ahead but along side of them not in front.

Looks like good fun, i remember doing that years ago when i was small.
That fish is called a monodactylus not a batfish, similar in shape but you don't get the batfish down here, more a tropical target.

Off the wharf can be good, also around the beaches near it like cobblers, then off the rocks at wy-ar-gine point off to the left.

I would much rather the pro's stay out of the harbour, it has become such a good fishery since they've left and it needs to be kept that way. If you don't want to be eaten then go in the water, its not hard, just need to make sure that people are aware. Something should be done off the beaches though, they are meant for people to swim and enjoy themselves in the water without having the imminent threat of sharks.

Thats correct about fireline, i don't go past 10lb with it.
Tufline is ok but it frays a lot, Suffix is very good, i find it better the heavier you go, fins is also good but does need a little bit or wearing in as said. A brand i found in north queensland i think it might of been called amnesia, i've got some in 20lb and its fantastic, never caused me any grief.
What are you mainly using it for?

Nice Kingy Barker, seems to be a few good ones being pulled out of the bay.
CFD i believe its a Daiwa Monster Mesh, i've got one of the spin versions, great rods and go good on the kings.

G'day, I put a same post last about sharks in Botany bay.
There was a 3m shark what looked like a bronzie crusing on the surface middle of the bay..
It seems like sharks are struggling to get feed out there so coming in for easier meals,
let's not be part of that.....

I wouldn't say they're struggling, i think they are attracted here by the amount of tasty pelagic fish that are close to the coastline and inshore as well as the big schools of yakkas, pillies and slimies we've been seeing recently.
Probably only a matter of time before they become a problem on beaches.

I read somewhere the other day that in recent times australia has been playing too many matches too close together just for the extra cash from sponsors, match revenue etc... and this in turn leads to player overload and unable to perform at there best.
This seems a possibility when you see some of the ways top line batsmen are getting out in the last few games.
I think a good thing would be for commentators to be hooked up to the captains as they are experienced themselves and often come up with good ideas that could make the game more interesting to watch and to play. Although i doubt this will ever happen as you'll get issues of bias with commentators etc..
Remember that the team has changed a lot in the last 12-24 months with retirements and a lot of injuries and it is going to take a long time for the younger players to get experienced and become the same dominant forces that australia is known to have. Think of the injury list we've had the last few months, jaques, watson, lee, symonds, siddle, clarke, clark and probably more. Plus the selectors haven't done us any favours, picking guys like cameron white who cant even spin the ball.
If we want to become the team we used to be again then i think picking young players is the answer, sure guys like Dave Hussey are playing well and probably deserve a shot but in doing that its denying a good young player a chance at gaining valuable experience to become a top line player by the time he realistically will get his chance to prove himself which is too late and means we'll still be in the same rebuilding predicament we're in now.

Where abouts in the harbour was this Andrew, always good to know where they are roughly.
How many bonito did you get also, haven't heard of them being caught in a long time in the harbour.

Steve all are good quality reels, if you're just using it for bream/flatties and not pelagics then the lower gear ratio in the daiwa's might be good.
I own a Sustain, and a new Twin Power 10000 (not exactly a bream reel but know its quality) and i've used a few SOL's. I'd say the sustain is probably the nicest out of all of them but i do really like both others, in the smaller reel sizes i don't think the twin power is worth the extra money over the sustain.
If you've got the money for a Luvias then go for it, have a chat to Slinky, I think he has one. Maybe consider the Shimano Aspire as well if you're happy paying extra, but figure out your budget and exactly what you'll use the reel on then see which fits your requirements best.

We had a similar thing in the harbour last week.
Saw hundreds of sea gulls on the main harbour and thought has to be fish, got there only to see bait fish feeding, I'm pretty sure they were yakkas as i got a few glimpses and saw yellow tails on them. But no predatory fish in sight, its ridiculous the amount of bait there and not one thing after them, sometimes fish really confuse me, i just cannot think of a possible explanation why there wouldn't be fish after them

Should Braid Breaking Strains Be Advertised Correctly?

Makes sense, so how do they come up with the breaking strain they advertise? Is it to do with the diameter of the line or does the spectra/dyneema supplying company send them off as a certain strength and then that strength increses with the brands variations whilst they advertise the breaking strain they originally had??
