  1. Great effort, Looks like the Jackall Transams are going to be even harder to find now !
  2. How far North is North ? That bonnie is a cracker !
  3. That sucks mate...was your car parked next to the lake or was it in that little area where you can access the beach further down ? I left my car in that spot once...lucky i have an alarm where the beeper attached to the keys flashes when it is going off...ran back up the sand dune when i noticed it but the mongrels had fled without doing much damage...havent gone back since.
  4. I am looking at getting rid of a TLD 20 and Shimano Speedmaster IV if anyone is interested, The TLD 20 is spooled with about 550 metres of 15 kilo (thin diameter), speedmaster has no line.
  5. Netic does it again....Started with the Kingies then the Dollies, now the Yellowfin...next stop Marlin City I reckon ! Good stuff mate, hopefully the expected change in weather goes away by the time i get a chance to go out for them next week.
  6. no probs Cap3, Mal Florence, Ron Calcutt and Rod Harrison were great pioneers werent they? Would also love to get my hands on the fishermans world vids. I think we are showing our age here.... Unfortunately i dont reemember John Mellion though. Danielinbyron...they use to be available in my local vid as well, thats where i had seen them but i havent been there in years and when i returend the place was full of dvd's only....Geoff was the bloke who gave me the idea of using fish heads as bait for big snapper...i can still remember him using a huge bonito head and throwing it into the wash and getting slammed by a 10 kilo plus red. I will keep looking out for them and will let those interested know how i go.
  7. I remember watching these vids as a youngster and was wondering if anybody knows where to purchase these or if anybody is willing to part with their copies ?? This is the guy that made a few vids including Kingfish Secrets where he pins 3 kilo salmon and sends them out as live kingy baits. If tacklo's sell them are they on dvd now or is it still vhs. Thanks.
  8. I also have heard of a few big kings around the 12 mile reefs but have heard of them being caught on livies and big squid heads......Dotn see why jigging for them wouldnt work. I plan on doing some jigging in the coming months. If anybody has had success maybe you can share a few secrets, stuff like what sort of knife jigs you have had the most success with...sizes colours etc....i have two outfits a lighter 30 pound outfit that can take jigs to 200 grams and a heavier 65 pound outfit that can take bigger knife jigs......hopefully this will allow me to jig the reefs up to 50 metres and 100 + metres....i have only tried it once whilst fishing for snapper as an experiment and got a bonito first drop but nothing after that...i put it down to being anchored and not drifting....but then again it could just be that i havent got a clue....its a new form of fishing that i want to get into...the way they get those samson fish in WA freaks me out !!
  9. Believe it or not dolphins do occassionally get hooked but rarely landed. I was fishing off the breakwall at south west rocks with live mullet and as my bait hit the water when i cast i saw a dolphin fin dive and then my rod buckled over and i lost 300 + metres of braid within seconds and was coming close to a spooling...after coming to my senses i locked the drag up and busted it off...freaked me out. On another note last week we were fishing for snapper when my mates rod nearly flew out of his hands, we were floating baits and i have never seen a reel go so hard before....he wanted to chase the thing but i kept telling him if he didnt lock his drag up he would end up with no line in a hurry as it wasnt stopping, after reeling my line in and throwing the anchor bouy overboard ready to chase it he locked his drag up and snapped it off....we noticed that there were huge swirls in the direction of the line and then about 100 + metres down we saw a spout of water blow up and we couldnt believe our eyes...we are not 100% sure but we believe a whale must have swam into his line and after taking up the slack the hook must have caught onto its body.....wierd things happen.
  10. Eastcoastin, is that you andd the other Dan in the promo dvd which comes with the latest fishing world mag ?
  11. Penguin where about did you get the slimies ? I too wouldnt mind getting some for bait.
  12. Will fishing be allowed? By LARISSA MEIKLE Tuesday, 28 March 2006 One concerned fishing group is not opposed to the marine park, but is woried the community could be locked out of 20 to 30 per cent of the park under no access sanctuary zones, without scientific justification. Newcastle $%^&* vice president Geoff Ruse said the Marine Park Authority had failed to do an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the effects of the proposed park to back up its zones. The marine park proposal covers about 97,000 hectares, which extends from Cape Hawke near Forster to the north end of Stockton Beach. Mr Ruse is also worried about the lack of information available to the public and he believes he is not alone. Recently Mr Ruse attended a public airing about the marine park at Nelson Bay. He said a large crowd attended the meeting and he, like many others, welcomed the opportunity for locals to discuss the proposal. "There has been a dearth of information and counter claims from the Marine Park Authority and a lot of political spin and hype from metropolitan politicians. "So it was great to get first hand information, facts and figures from people who have been involved in this process in Cape Byron, which has been a total disaster for the Northern Rivers communities. "Now we have a better understanding and appreciation of what we can expect here at Port Stephens." Freedom to Fish is the slogan of Newcastle $%^&*, which is a branch of the NSW-based $%^&*, established last year to promote conservation of the environment through sustainable use and traditional management systems. Another local conservation group, Newcastle Wilderness Society, does not agree with ECOfisher's stance. The society's branch coordinator, Claire Dunn, believes the general public will not be locked out and will be free to carry out their recreational activities as normal. Ms Dunn said the proposed marine park was multiple-use and there would be full access, unlike a national park. "There are four certain zonings in the park, so fishers can still put a line in the water but there is no commercial fishing in sanctuary zones. "Yet, in the larger zones, general use such as commercial fishing is permitted." Ms Dunn said the park would be good for the economy with an increase in tourism. She believes recreational fishers would return to the area as there will be an increase in fish numbers. This is a similar platform to the State Government. NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said there was evidence the marine park would generate significant tourism dollars and protect marine life. He said the local advisory committee was still working on the plan, with the draft zone still weeks away.
  13. great effort gill, what kind of lures were the fin taking, what colours seem to work best ?
  14. I love this subject...fishos have gone kingy mad but the jewfisherman are a bit quiet...must be all the fish we have been getting stuck into.... I have to agree with Red on this one, all fish fight differently, I have had small jew 10-15kgs give me more stick than my biggest at 72 pounds which came in after 10 or so minutes on the beach a few years back....location has a lot to do with it as well, most of my fishing for jew is done off the beach and if i dont feel any headshakes and the fight goes for over 1/2 an hour I usually bust them off thinking its a ray...you do get the occasional foul hooked fish which wont shake its head and take longer to bring up but thats the risk you take, you either have a broken back fighting a possible heavy piece of carpet or lose a fish of a lifetime. I would also assume that the new lines we have these days contribute alot to a jew fight time....braid seems to bring them in a lot quicker and guys who target jew in the known locations on the hawkesbury are using anything from 50-80lb braid these days, i know i wouldnt fish for jew there with anything less than 24kg mono or braid....One thing i have learnt about jew is that even though they are predictable in certain aspects...like habitat, what they are eating etc....you always can expect the unexpected so a 500 metre run in a river with a strong current is definately possible, especially from a 45kg+ fish....and if its the person i am thinking of then they use game gear so its not a made up story. Back to the original suject, Mick I can symphasize with your son mate...keep the reports and stories coming and unlucky !!
  15. Thanks Knapers....Gotta love Bob. Hey Mick...if it wasnt for you then i would have never known about your little touch of paradise. Next time I come up i'll pop in and say hello over a nice steak in the surf club....love that view from the balcony...the best thing about it was the Mrs loves the place as well. cheers mate. thanks mate, it sure did...wish i was still on holidays though....work is such a bummer.
  16. G'day Mick Okay well I'll try my best to give you a run down. Old Bar is such a great place to stay, its nice and quiet and Leanne and Fassel who run Lanis are really great people. The people in this little town are also very friendly and very welcoming. We had arrived at Old Bar on Boxing Day, I tried throwing a few shads around during the next morning for no interest, the beach was fairly rough and wild with a strong wind chop. I decided that beers with friends and people we met at the park would take priority and I would wait for the beach to calm down a touch before giving it another go. About lunch time on the day before New Years Eve we headed down to the beach for a swim and to my surprise the gutter just infront of where we were swimming held a massive population of nice sized sand mullet. It was the first time I had seen some life in the water apart form a few birds working the water behind the breakers. I quickly ran back to camp and got my flick stick and a loaf of bread and went back down to the beach and started burlying, the mullet were very finicky but I did manage to catch two and to my surprise even got a bream on unweighted bread pieces. I had them in the bucket with an aerator and took them back to camp and left them in a shady spot and we got stuck into a few mixed vodkas who my friends wife specializes in and had a great bbq to top it off. Just before dark the drinks started talking and I psyched myself up for a fish. I got ready and headed down to the same gutter I got the mullet. My friends kept telling me to hang on and have another drink but the sun was setting and I told them to catch up with me and to bring some more drinks down. So I headed off with only two baits and high hopes of getting my holiday jewfish. First bait hit the water right on dark and after a few minutes I saw it panic but no hit. I pulled it in and surprisingly it wasn’t on my two hook rig anymore, so I quickly hooked my 2nd and last mullet and sent it out. I went back to my bag to ring my friends and tell them to either bring some more bait down and hurry up with the beer or that I would be back up in a few minutes. Just as I dialled the number I looked buck at my rod tip and the glow stick on the end of my rod was parallel with the sand, I threw my phone anywhere and ran to the rod and set the hooks. I was using an alvey with a schnyder 9 wrap on 15 kilo string and the fish took me for a good old run down the right hand side of the beach towards the surf club. I gave chase down the beach for 50 metres or so and remembering the broken reef was to my right I dug my feet into the sand and started palming my drag so I could try and stop it from reefing me…all the time hoping it wasn’t a ray. After that run I felt a few headshakes and kinda convinced myself it was a jew. Here I was battling this fish all by myself and totally freaking out…It was a good 10 minutes before I had the fish just behind the breakers and I reckon another 5 minutes to finally beach it…when I ran down and gilled it I was hooting and yelling like a mad man…I think it was still the vodka talking…5 minutes later my friends showed up and they were excited as I was…I seriously thought about releasing the fish but then remembered that it was new years eve the next night and that the campers could all enjoy steaks and cutlets on me so I kept it and my friend took a few pictures. It took me a good hour and a half to clean it and cut it in pieces and hand it out to everyone. Unfortunately I didn’t get to weigh her but looking at other photos of fish I have caught she looks about 50 pounds give or take. Old Bar is a place that will stay in my memory for a long time to come and im sure I will be back.
  17. Mick if you are talking about the fish caught by someone staying at Lanis at Old Bar then that was me !
  18. Throw me in the hat as well please !!!
  19. Thanks Darryl, that is a nice fish.....i was at a bux day on Saturday and got a call from a mate who was fishing sydney harbour and he was hooting and hollering about an 18kg jew he caught in one of the most unlikely spots, i will post a pic up of his fish and the background in due time, he is just waiting to see if a magazine will publish his picture, the fish is very silver and looks like it hasnt spent much time in the river. I also know of the guy you are all complaining about and he is a bit of a fruitloop and sounds like he is on the whacky stuff which also could add to his paranoia...i know that there are 3 renowned spots in the hawkesbury but you just never know where a big fish will turn up and it does pay to always try different things. I feel sorry for him cos there seems to be a lot of people out to get him and his reputation now. This is a great website and all this jewfish ramble of secret spots, cheating, photo backgrounds etc just goes to show that when it comes to jewies fisherman go a bit loonie, could be all those lonely nights, just dont discredit a fishing comp like the hawkesbury classic cos a lot of hard work is put in to organise such a big event....you gotta love the drama though ! Keep it going fellas its all very entertaining and it makes the day at work interesting !!
  20. Congrats to your mate on the boat win Dan, that is a great prize. Anyone know the full results of the comp ? I would be interested to hear how big the biggest jew caught was this year as there have been a few stonkers caught over the passed few weeks.
  21. Hi, I was after some inside info on fishing the Manning Valley Area. I will be staying there over the xmas and new years period in one of the caravan parks at old bar and wanted to know if anybody knows how the place fishes in this period, what usually bites around this time and what options there are when fishing the area in general. I know there is a little breakwall there....How deep is it ? What type of gear is needed to fish it, shall i bring small spin sticks and concentrate on fishing the river or hall up the heavy gear and fish the beaches, rocks and breakwall. I really dont have a clue as to what fishing options are available to me, i know that the beaches will hold a mixed variety of species , i will be landbased and have a 4WD and will be fishing for 7 days whilst the misses enjoys the sun
  22. Anthony you got the wrong bloke mate...this is Danny.
  23. Thanks mate, snapper fishing is very rewarding, it takes a while to suss things out...we initially drifted and when we came across some fish we anchored.
  24. Well done mate thats a top fish using sp's.
  25. Thanks guys, thats drummoyne boat ramp...they fed the soccer team and still had a few to give to the relos as well....no one in our soccer team bloody touched the snags....and even though i am a roosters supporter i was very happy with the tigers getting up. We started off shallow but the current wasnt the best so we decided a new tactic was needed and we went looking for some new structure and deeper water....we ended up finding some gravel in about 65 metres and must have come across a fish highway of some sort....the spot has been gps'ed for future refernce...wanted to flick plastics at them but didnt have the weighted jig heads for them at that depth....might have to stock up and give it a go next time. Years gone passed has seen some good reds come up in september or november with the usual october time not producing much....this year we tried again in september and caught a handfull but the conditions havent been the best as we fish out of a top ender and cant rough it and have to be a bit choosey with the conditions, Saturday was an awesome looking day and after stocking up with some livies...we thought we may be in with a chance.......there have also been a heap of makos and birds around which hasnt helped....as i mentioned saturday didnt start off the best and after giving my mate an ear full about moving and trying something different he finally caved. Just goes to show that thinking out of the square sometimes is the way to go. Fish were caught on livies and cuttle fish.
