    Operator qualifications

    VHF and MF/HF marine radio equipment and Inmarsat (A, B, C) Satellite communications equipment carried on board a vessel must be under the control of a qualified operator at all times. All coast stations must also be under the control of a qualified operator.

    Most operators choose to obtain a Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP), which covers the operation of both VHF and MF/HF equipment. The Marine Radio Operators VHF Certificate of Proficiency (MROVCP) has a somewhat simpler syllabus, but only covers the operation of VHF equipment. The Marine Satellite Communications Certificate of Endorsement (Satellite Endorsement) may be added to either the MROCP or the MROVCP if use of Inmarsat equipment is required.

    Inmarsat-C equipment that only supports the operation of a Vessel Monitoring System does not require operator qualifications.

    Many TAFEs and marine organisations offer courses leading to examination for the MROCP. Such courses are not compulsory and many candidates for examination successfully self study. However, the examination for the Satellite Endorsement should follow conclusion of an approved course of study, including practical instruction in the use of Inmarsat communications equipment. The Australian Maritime College (AMC) provides the marine examination and certificate service on behalf of the ACMA. The AMC can provide the details of organisations and individuals offering courses and or conducting exams.

    Operators of a Ship station class C or a Major coast station are required to hold a GMDSS General Operators Certificate of Proficiency (GOCP) issued by AMSA. This is a higher level qualification involving detailed theoretical and practical knowledge of marine radio and satellite communications equipment. AMSA has accredited a number of educational institutions to conduct GOCP examinations at the conclusion of a relevant course of instruction. For further information, licensees should contact AMSA.

    Information about operator qualifications is contained in the ACMA Information Papers Maritime Coast Stations - Certificates of Proficiency and Maritime Ship Stations - Certificates of Proficiency. Information about operator qualifications is also contained in a fact sheet entitled Marine Certificates of Proficiency.

  2. the speed was not the issue here, its the "no wash zone"

    i was well under the 8 knot speed limit, but i was going just fast enough to have full control of my boat.

    i have a 4.75 metre aluminium boat with a 50hp motor on the back.

    last sunday afternoon the weather turned and was blowing a minimum of 15 knots,

    if i was to do an any speed under 4 knots i wouldnt have total control of my boat

  3. hi, would just like to know where i could find a list of Maritime penalties and offences.

    long story short, lastweekend i was navigating through unknown waters in sydney harbour, where i came across an 8 knot zone.... and didnt realise that it was also a no wash zone.

    i slowed my boat to under 8 knots and was traveling at the same speed as the police vessel( they were in the middle of the channel i was on their starboard) and they pulled me up, did a quick checkup on safety and supposedly gave me a warning about the no wash zone,

    1 week later i have a $500 fine in my letter box.

    has anyone else been in this situation?

  4. you could use a Universal Ram mount and bolt it down into your gunnel infront of your gear control, if you have a look at the mount it has 2 swivel joints, so you can position the screen the way you like it. check to see that the bottom mounting of the lowrance will line up on one end of the ram mount, you might be able to modify the bracket to suit.

  5. so when you say "pod" that arnt part of the waterline, do you mean outboard pods like the one pictured? that actually sits in the water, as do the bungs that go in it... its part of the boat.

    i have a stacer 4.75 and it measures longer if you include the outboard pod.

    who can remeasure it and provide me with a certificate please pm me.

  6. i live pretty much on the cooks and have always wanted to go up the river in my boat, just wondering how shallow does it get in there? and how deep?

    also whats the legalities of driving a motor boat up the river? are there speed limits? how far up are motorboats allowed to go?

  7. If your refering to a design similar to the one in the photo then , yes , it is part of the water line & as such is included in the measurment.

    that looks very similer to the back of my boat. the rear pod bit does sit in the water.

    i will check with the boat code people and see what they recon.

  8. My understanding there are two methods.

    1. Tip of the actual bow ( not inc the bow spit) to the transom.

    2. Tip of the bow to the end of the water line.

    To clarify "the end of the water line" , the below photo shows the rear of my boat.

    Measuring , using method 1. is 4.6mt. Using method 2. which includes the the sponson extensions is 4.9mt.

    Under Maritime rules my boat can be remeasured & clasified as 4.9mt as the sponsons are part of the "water line".

    A lot of mono hulls have a filled in extended section off the transom. These are now included in the measurment..

    What is not included or considered part of the "water line" are outboard pods , ie , bracket or extension fitted to the transom to which the motor is fitted.

    As an example , the outboard mounting on my boat is a further 100mm beyond the end of the sponson. This is not considered part of the water line & as such does not qualify the boat to be measured as 5.0mt

    thankyou geoff, i had included the Outboard pod as part of the measurment.

    will remeasure tonight but i dont think it will go past 4.75

    why isnt the pod considered as part of the waterline?

  9. i to have a stacer baymaster sports 475, i have just attempted to measure my boat and it has a total length of 4.90m

    can anyone clarify how boat hulls are measured?

    does the maritime go by the model of the boat or actual measurments?

    By the look of the pic I don't think it's a Cobe.

    It looks as though it has a very flat head & also that the fish has a round, rough circle on top of it's head. Did it have that on the top of it's head?

    If that's the case then it's a Remora.

  11. Yep.

    Best you get a chart which will show you the no anchoring zone. The Zone itself is actually a very large area,

    It actually runs all the way Sth of the Tripod to Shark IS. There is alot of cables and pipes etc in that area, which are owned by teh Navy, hence the reason they dont want any anchores dropped in that area.

    i did a quick search on the internet for a chart to no avail, can you or anyone here post a chart of the area?

  12. Yes .. anchoring on the Tripod will get you a nice fine. If anyone has ever caught good fish off the tripod, you will know that if you do anchor, you will have buckleys of gettign the fish out of the structure. It is best to hover and use the boat to drag the fish off once hooked.

    hi, im pretty sure i know the tripod you guys are reffering to, the one just before the big yellow buoy as you pass rosebay?

    is it a no anchoring zone? iv never actually noticed a sign there?

  13. does anyone know what depth the structure scan will work upto? iv heard their mainly for use in shallow waters, not really usefull in deep water, can you shed some light please?

  14. And if anyone can point me where to go for a canopy, as opposed to a bimini, i.e. one that goes right down to the windscreen (I want to get out of the rain, not the sun), let me know, please. 4.0m Stacer runabout.

  15. thanks for all the replys everyone, really appreciate it.

    well i have good news, i disconnected the hand prime pump and used the good old trick of sucking on 1 end of the hose and like magic the fuel/water seperator was now full of fuel, now to get it going into the motor, i reconnected the hand prime pump back to the main hose, i then held it vertically above my head with a screwdriver pushing into the end bit (where is usually plugs into the motor) to allow the exces air out, and after about 5 pumps there was a great spray of fuel all over me.

    i then plugged it back into the motor and started first go!

    now all i need it some good weather so i can go out again!
