  1. What benefit do you think your getting from 98 Apartfrom the detergents and short shelf life additives they include to get the extra hp
  2. 100hp at the prop x 2 is 200hp it'doesn't disappear What you do gain is the extra drag of another leg in the water, going from posts on the topic it's estimated at a few percent efficiency loss Also extra weight as generally twins will weigh more then the same hp as a single engine And the addition of extra oil res cables steering fuel lines etc The benefits are substantial though only if hooked up completely independent of each other Ie own batteries and own fuel tanks
  3. They handle some expansion but you can permanent wreck some tanks if left too long The ability to seal the tank is so you don't slop fuel on yourself when you manhandle the tanks Or get water in when you wash the boat As stated above a permanently sealed tank would starve the engine of fuel after a few minutes of run time

    Damaged Skeg

You need to strip the case and before welding heat the whole casing It's very easy to distort the case and bearing seals etc won't fit any more More a specialists job both to weld and put it all back together The sludge may just be unburnt 2 stroke oil, check your gear box oil what colour is that ?
  5. Too top up a deep cycle within a few hours of full sun you would need about 20 m2 of solar panels Those little sub $100 jobs will do nothing to a discharged battery Best bet is two batteries a cranking batt just for starting And a deep cycle for running accessories that can also be switched too if the main battery fails I've just done this and the cost was about $1-150 in materials plus $400 for the deep cycle Never switch between batteries while the engine is running as it can bugger the charging circuits And don't run the switch on "both" unless both batteries are identical in size capacity and type
  6. liquids expand when heated and contract when cooled leave it closed and put a tote tank out in the sun, even if empty it will expand and distort
  7. flooding carbs failed power packs if you hold the choke in does it keep running ? id take a old engine with 1000 hours on it but regularly serviced over one thats sat for years and never been looked at they still need servicing once a year even if not being used gear box bolts can become seized, rubber can perish that normally would be ok as it would be smeared with grease every service offer him trailer hull and fitout value only and factor in a repower
  8. One word off advice if your going to have a go yourself Buy the best dust mask you can afford, paper masks are not acceptable from any oh&s stand point Double can respirator at minimum
  9. i troll at 1 knot, but with the engine just in gear it does 1.5 so i just have a cheap sea anchor i throw out the back cuts down by .5 of a knot

    Old But New

looking good A neighbour has done a haines 445 resoration similar to this, he went a 70hp 4 stroke yamaha he said this is a bit too much grunt and a 60 would be ideal
  11. take the bearings out give them a clean then go to cbc bearings you will get quality bearings for a little more at a minimum get timken
  12. If your club sport is manual it's exactly 1.5 tonne less then my Mazda bt-50 can tow Hp ain't everything
  13. Don't run engines dry you an seriously bugger some of the newer ones And with older ones with alloy fuel bowls you wil get oxidisaton of the ally Also if you have oil injection you will just fill the bowls with oil making it a bastard to start next time
  14. abu1600c simple and quality baitcaster can cast down to 3-4gms
  15. also keep it dry as possible, on grass with a tarp over it doesn't help i kept mine in the garage but then realised the clothes drier was pumping moist air into the room and causing issues
  16. break it down into 4 parts hull trailer outboard electronics and fitout the outboard is the most expensive part of all of it a 4.5m halfcabin will need 50-70hp a good outboard say 6-10 years old outboard 2-3.5k trailer 800-1.5k that leaves you 1k for the hull value buy a 12-13ft tinny with a 15-25hp engine for 3.5k and have 1.5 to fix it up and fit it with some luxuries an example i bought a 5m cuddy cab so no cabin in alluminium with a 70hp at xmas for 9k its a 1996 model so 16 years old for 5k you aint going to get anything id take my family out in

    Hydrofoil

Good for underpowered boats or boats with too much weight at the rear ie two guys battery fuel tank with a tiller steer Can be disastrous boat in a big following sea, Gives the wave more leverage on the rear of the boat I wouldn't put one on a offshore boat, I'd fix the true issue to why your boats not performing
  18. the proper way is too drill oversized holes fill the holes with a resin talc or microbead mix smear the bolts with Vaseline and then place them in their final resting place in the holes when the resin mix dries the Vaseline stops the bolts getting stcuk and forms a thread this will stop any water ingress into the core of the transom
  19. my prop looks too pretty to go to the entrance lol
  20. Could always try to buddy up with another boat and share information on the day via mobile etc Someone finds fish the other let's em know vice versa
  21. And in the end you have a boat that will be labeled home made in the rego papers Resale value will be low, if you pick a company to weld it for you Pick someone with a reputation in the boat industry so you can move it on easier

    Etec 5ohp

one other factor is its the cubic capacity of the engine at play as well some engines are detuned version of their bigger brothers, ie the 70 may have the same cc as the 90 you really have to research what your getting its just not about the sticker on the engine cover
  23. if you saw the quality of the welds on my 385 explorer not hard at all a decent built and fitted out plate boat will cost more then a extruded jobbie from the major players
  24. There's a tonne of difference between a pressed jobbie from telwater and a well designed plate boat like a jb or others Generally for the same length you get more hull depth and more v along the hull and a lot stronger built with more features My mates 5.2m Joshua boats center console shits all over tinnies the same length for ride and deck space
  25. i went out sunday as well got a few quid in the morning, then tried to find some kings with no luck it was really slopppy round the heads so i didnt venture too far down the coast
