  1. They are more common than people think, they are in every Estuary and they are the most dangerous Shark in the world.

i use to jew fish from the shore up wisemans way and further up streamand everynow and then youd get big fish take the bait to end up busting off and a very frayed leader

  2. I have a 40hp Johnson on a Stacer 4.5m runabout and get cavitation when I cross a wake or when I turn when the sea gets up a bit. I have lowered the motor to the last hole which made a difference but I still get some cavitation.

I am wondering whether a Permatrim or other hydrofoil (I have seen the SE 200/300 Sport) help?

in any boat hwhich will be used in a following sea cav plates are a last resort.

i know you said youve lowered the engine, but where does the cav plate sit in relation to the bottom of the boat now?

  3. also depends if you just happy to chug along

ive had boats that didnt plane but got me fishing, 5hp will get you going against nearly any current you will come across, just allow time to get where your going and watch out when crossing channels etc

life doesnt always have to be at 40k/h

  4. You should repack your bearing's with grease at least once a year.jack wheels up,spin wheels, listen for rumbling,if all good then, pull bearings out, wash out with petrol and a paint rush, rince with water, blow dry if you have a compressor, inspect the rollers and case hardening for flaking if no flaking or corrosion or pits in rollers or roller track then repack them, and reuse them,no use changing bearings for the sake of it.put new seals in.

also depends on how far you sink the thing when launching retrieving, if bearings out of water once a year

if you sink it completley id do it every 10 trips or so.

or if doing a lot of ks id check it more often

even if th ebearings ok its just anew split pin each time you check and a bitof inconvienience from the mess, but having to do 0 anew bearing on the side of the road at night is horrible.

  5. Seen some funny bog ups there before too.

Either way, it's a top spot, if you can get out. Seems like the weather always plays up when I have a crack up there. :mad3:

go up to the jail and just drag it across the beach

i ran back creek in my allycraft 3.95 avalon open tinny and 25hp johnson about 7 years ago, hooked asmall black 35-50kilos

main issue is you have to sit down to fight as the boats are too unstable too stand up and get leverage

when back creeks tides wernt suitable i just dragged it across the beach at the jail caravan park

i wouldnt be taken people out with you for joy rides as its open ocean that is protected by the headland, really need an understanding of how the area works to be safe.

in the pub for lunch one day we see a 3.85 quinny flat bottom punt hooke dup about 500m off shore.

its alovely spot for small boats

  6. Well done mate,top fish.

    Steve

nice fish, nice to know there are 50cm fish still to be caught

to the person asking if they are ok to eat

some people dont mind the taste, ive tried one from glenbawn but have had better fish to eat

the main reason is the nepean is a dirty cesspool tbh

over 50 treatment plants along its length, all the agriculture chemicals and effulent run off from the farms further up stream.

they say the nepeans total flow in non rain periods is 80% treated efulent, skiers are warned to not ski if they have open wounds

  7. on'ya chopper...stuck it to em!

    ..cheers!..stevo!..

    who was the dealer?

do you plan to use them for servicing after this?

i see your location is western syd and assume it is the local dealer at windsor.

  8. Sorry, I'm not sure I know what you mean.

my draw bar is 75mm square tube

the shackle sits on top with two bolts that go all the way through and have a washer and nut underneath

well one underneathand one on top to get through that clearance issue.

the spacers fit in the square tube and the bolts run through them

if you didnt have a spacer you could crush the 75mm tube by over tightening or due to the forces of a collision

  9. Over :)

Well, I'm a little bit happier today - just!

Getting 30 yr old rusty siezed bolts off is a nightmare. I've spent all day doing the winch and the tow coupling. Brute force with a couple of spanners got 2 of the 3 winch bolts off - pulling and pushing the winch with all my might was the only way to get the third off - by braking it! A nice new Jarret 3:1 'webbing' (which I prefer) winch is now on.

The coupling bolts were a nightmare. One was not too bad, the other refused to stop the nut turning - degreaser, rust converter, inox, 'freeze' spray, then the opposite - heat from a butane torch - nup, nothing would unseize them. Eventually using my foot on one socket wrench and all my might on the other at the top, saw it come free - but not by getting the nut to turn, the bolt broke off half way down! You can imagine how buggered I am right now. I need a

Will tackle the bearings tomorrow. 2 bolts came off one of the wheels easy so hopefully its a bit easier than today.

Question 1: The new coupling is odd - the rear bolt is fine. The front bolt needs to be a certain length to get through the drawbar channel and stick out the bottom for the nut - but the design of the coupling theres a piece stopping the bolt from being put down the hole directly from above, and its too much of an angle to get the bolt down through it - so just for that one I put it through from below, used Loctite on the thread and a nyloc nut - and did it all up TIGHT. Will that be ok? Alternatively I can use a shorter bolt and just put a nut on the inside top of the channel.

Question 2 (maybe for Huey?): I have a Clymers 2-70hp manual that covers to 98 (and was printed in 98). Is my 99 likely to be the same?

my new dunbier has the front bolt with the nut on top

but it has hollow spacers in side the drawbar to stop it collapsing when you tighten it up

  10. They are already 9's. Next bright idea? :)

The wheel nuts and thread are a bit old and rusty looking so I want to take them off, do the bearings, clean it all up and replace the nuts. Can someone confirm they are holden - they are 5 stud marked as AWLCO 4.50ex9.

EDIT: From a bit of googling I'm pretty sure they are HT Holden.

I'm also out of Inox (first stop this morning is to get a few bits and pieces) but I have found automotive 'carby and throttle body cleaner' to be fantastic to clean up the nuts and things - it seems to disolve the rustyness quite well.

is the axel under or over the spring?

  11. hi tony ,the way the boys described it ,is the way i do it

    if you have keel rollers

on my old boat ,on the keel rollers i replaced the axles with stainless rod and greased them up with normal grease and they rolled for much longer than the gal axles ,only problem was that they rolled to good ,as in i had to slow it down with a rope from the bow to the winch post

    cheers arman

you can also drop the roller asembly by undoing the bolt on the trailer frame, unless they are welded in place

i then use a jack to lift it back up into position

this all depend son trailer setup etc, but with the haines 600r i replaced every roller with the boat still on the trailer

  12. a car generally uses its tank of fuel in a week, and is then refilled, a car also doesnt have 2 stroke oil added to it.

this will mean after each trip i will have to run carbs dry and empty the tank and flush with metho, as i only get out every3-4 weeks.

as my tank has breathers it will conintually expand and contract drawing humid air into the tank being an aluminium tank this then has the issue of oxidisation so i cant win :(

will a water fuel seperator take out water that has been absorbed into the ethanol component? i didnt think they did

but hey with the marine park proposal i gues si wont need aboat anyway lol

  13. Hi Kelvin, you do not mention your RPM, hopefully you are seeing 5500-5600 and if not when back at the selling dealer get hom to put the right prop on it.

$300 for a case of oil should last you at least 100 hours if you drive as most people do, if for example you drive at WOT everywhere, then with any brand of engine the fuel and oil usage goes up.

Best of luck with it and if i can be of help just ask,

    Cheers,

    Huey.

off shore you sometimes get days you can run at wot but often not, on previous boats comfortable offshore speed in 1-2m seas was around the 20 knot region so most outboards chug along in the 3500-4k rev range

but back to the origional post very nice looking setup, could the 115 have not been enough grunt for th e boat to begin with hence why your seeing the big fuel differences? going from a 115 4 to a 150 2 has to make a big diff in accelration and reduced time to planing

  14. here we go again do i hear another 2stroke v direct injection "discussion": :1prop::1prop::1prop:

    no your not hearing anything

just a fact dont look after any engine and it will play up and 2 stroke v direct injection is goobldegook

direct injection is 2 stroke btw

shame some people like to jiggle the can when their could be intelligent conversation going on

i could say something like this, in the last 12 months ive only ever seen two catostrophic gear box failures and guess what they were etecs

but that doesnt mean diddly squat as its only a small percentage of motors in actuall use, also being sponsored anglers both times the engines were covered up and didnt make the forum gossip pages

  15. Here is a little test you may like to try ....

Go to any busy ramp early in the morning this summer , and have a look at which brands of engine have problems starting. You may be in for quite a surprise. See how they can completely obliterate the ramp with clouds of blue 2 stroke smoke. Watch for the cowlings to come off. These engines are not 30 years old . Some are definately under 3 .

Then watch someone start an ETEC. Turn the key , engine is running quietly. Cleanly.

Sometimes , I actually feel sorry for those who dont own one !! :074::074::074:

    Ross

and you can tell these motors are under 3 years old by looking at them? when say a 70hp yammy has looked the same for 10 years ?.

but then for me having a bit of blue smoke from a motor i can put a carby kit through for a few hundred bucks instead of 2k for a new set of injectors, i can live with the smoke.

dont look after a etec just like any engine you will have issues

  16. Hi Juggs, yes a basic carby 2-Stroke will be cheaper, but it is like comparing a Kia to a Mercedes-both are cars, but not in the same league. A Tohatsu 25HP and an E-TEC 25HP are two totally different engines and BRP are not worried about "dirty" engines.

All manufacturers have families of engines and either by carburation or EMM software they produce different HPs. In the case you mention the "HO" 115HP is still called a 115HP even though it pushes the 10% limit and does 126HP at the prop, so as long as it is called a 115HP that is all the insurance companies look at. The new 115HO will allow many boats here in Oz and world wide, rated to only 115HP, to fit the most powerful in terms of torque (very important for planning boats easily and cruising at lower RPM) and the fastest 115HP on the market, as well as have a fuel efficient, clean and quiet outboard. The 25HP, being the same engine as the 30HP will always be under stressed doing its HP and being the biggest CC in its class nothing will keep up with it.

I say the following all the time- it will be a shame when the day comes, like in the US and Europe already, where because some guy in the EPA says you can not buy a cheap small carby engine. You only option will be to buy an expensive engine, because as you said some person might only use his outboard once a month and only run for an hour, but he or she, if they want a new engine, will be forced, in the not too distant future, to buy an expensive outboard. There will, in my opinion, always be a need for cheap engines upto 30HP that in reality do not use alot of fuel anyway, but becasue the EPA has targetted the outboard industry you will not be able to buy new soon. In the scheme of things the amount of pollution us boaters put into the environment is SO small it really is amazing me how much the EPA has gone after the outboard engine manufacturers.

Sorry for the long post and yes if you want a cheap new outboard look at the Tohatsu and they are an OK outboard.

    Huey.

    thanks for the reply,

id put maybe 200 litres a year through an engine. so fuel economy not a great issue

where as i clock up 4 hours just sitting at traffic lights each day :)

  17. Hi Juggs, your dealers need to be more on the ball. We have been told by BRP that by about Decemeber these will be available to the public and the pricing will be similar to 4-Strokes of the same HP. To give you an idea most 4-Stroke 25HP sell for about $4,500, all though, at present while stocks last BRP are heavily discounting 25HP 4-Stroke Johnos B4 the new E-TEC arrive.

From what I have seen of these new E-TEC and been told they will perform above their HP like all E-TEC and offer the best of both worlds. I will be running some at Club E-TEC in October so then i can talk from first hand experience.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

thanks huey, well guess ill have to go have another chat with them :), although at that pricing and the amount of use i do a new 25 2 stroke tohatsu are 2300 each atm

one question how do etec get round the issue of mislabled engines ie 115 ho = 130 hp or a 25 which would be max for my boat having a engine that is actually over that.

what do the insurance companies think ?

  18. hit anything at more then a knot or two and youll rip it open

saw one heading up the nepean under outboard power 3hp from memory and it was the most uncomfortable looking ride ive ever seen anyone experience as the whole boat flexs no rigidness to it

try and find a second hand 10 foot inflatable with a part plywood floor maybe, i wouldnt trust my life to it tbh

  19. i have that same pdf for my 4 year old

i took them down to the local pool and threw them in so they knew what would happen if they ended up in the water, hopefully this means they wont panic if it does happen

basically they just have to stay upright till help arrives

  20. sweetage

I picked up the bullbar rod holders today.

It's actually for a spot @ the back of my boat so i can stack my rods when i don't need them. :1prop:

Perfect size and price for what i needed, instead of blowing 40$ a pop for a chunky thing.

    Thanks guys :1fishing1:

basically your not allowed ot have anything protrude past the standard front of the car

even oversized headlights will get questioned, also no sharp protuding objects

  21. Yea yea bananas are bad luck

I always take 2-3 out with me, considering our boat looks like a banana it's fine.

    :tease:

the banana myth is bullshite :) game fished for seasons and sneaked a bannana in the bottom of the bag each time and we did ok
