  1. Golemfish, Not only was their a serious bull shark attack in Sydney Harbour early last year but check out the below link: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/gotc...0-1111118951246 I'm sure their will be even more bull sharks around this year with the number of bait fish in the harbour. The only swimming I'll be doing is in the backyard pool...!!
  2. Hey All, Just a quick one - Went out Saturday morning, magic conditions but the morning just went from bad to worse for me and my bro. Got down to the boat at 5am - Looked perfect, saw a couple of big kings chasing bait fish so things were looking good. Went to start the boat, dead.. the battery has been playing up lately so knew it was the bloody battery - lucky we had a spare onboard - hooked that one up, but, nothing – that one dead also!! Long story short we charged one of the batteries at our marina and finally got the boat going - by now it was 6.30am but still had to get some yakkas - got them no trouble so our spirits were up again and ready to hit some of the markers in the harbour however by the time we got out there (our boat only does 6 knots) it was 8ish and each spot was packed like a coles carpark. A few drifts around some of the quieter markers but nothing.. Decided to head back into Middle Harbour to where we saw the kings working earlier on - soaked the livies for about an hour before we called it quits. Went to fire up the boat, and guess what - battery dead! gggeerrrrr... We managed to flag over a passing boat who then gave us a tow to the marina; it was two guys in a quintrex so not sure if you are raiders but thanks for the tow! Really appreciate it.. So got the boat booked in with the mechanic this morning plus getting a new finder installed so bring on the Christmas holidays!! Thanks again for the tow boys... I know you were off to downrig for some kings so appreciate your time and hope you got into them!! Cheers, Matt
  3. Hey Jewgaffer, Sorry for my late reply to say thanks for your help / advice. I ended up getting a Hummingbird finder as you suggested and as did alot of guys I talked to. Its getting installed as we speak so bring on those Kingys!! Thanks again mate, and hope that back of yours is getting better by the day. Cheers, Matt
  4. Hey Nathan, Congrats on your 1st king mate - Like you I have only managed to catch a 60cm King but trying like hell to get a legal one.. I was out on Saturday morning and didn’t get a touch so good on ya for getting into one.. It sounds like you are LB most of the time so thought I would just let you know where you might be able to catch a legal landbased King.. I live and work around North Sydney and over the past few weeks there have been a number of kings caught from Milson Point / Kirriblli - right under the harbour bridge. I actually took a walk around there yesterday and one guy had three 70cm + kings in his bucket - plus another fisho had a 55-60cm trev. It gets pretty busy down there so best to get their early - You can even get squid from the Kirribilli ferry wharf pre sunrise as it’s well lit. It’s also best to have a long beach rod if possible as you do need to get your baits out quite far away from the rocks. Also from my work I can see the harbour and every couple of days I can see big schools of fish working under the bridge. So give it a shot mate, I have never fished it before but as I walk around there all the time and there is always good fish being caught. Good luck on that legal king mate.. Matt
  5. Hey Raiders, Quick question about fish finders. I'm looking at buying my brother a fish finder for his birthday to replace his old one on our boat. I'm thinking of spending around $500. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for one around $500. Also, are they easy to install. We own an old timber cruiser that lives in the water so are you able to install it yourself or do you need a professional to do it. Any help and suggestions are appreciated. Cheers, MPM
  6. G'day, I was down there about a month ago, the dam level is very very low - I think under 10% now however there is some good fish getting caught. Manily yellow bellys I was told.. I tried for a few carp and didnt have much luck but I was getting stuck into the rather than fishing. Nice spot though, they have has some good rain the past 6-8 months so things are pretty green around there compared to the last few years. Good luck anyway..
  7. Hey Raiders, I am heading down to my sisters place in Cowra and staying in a place near Wyangla Dam.. I know the water level is pretty low down there however I have heard there is a heap of Carp in the dam so I thought I might try my luck and see if I can get rid of some of those pests! I have never fished for Carp before so any tips on rigs would be very helpful.. I have heard Corn and Bread are good baits but again any further help would be good. Also, if anyone has fished the dam before is there any other fish I could target? I will be LB. Thanks Raiders... Hope to see some good reports from the weekend.. Cheers MPM
  8. G'day Mad Keen John, Nice bag and great to hear you’re getting flatties on a regular basis... especially when flatty fillets are $30-34 bucks a KG...!! Hey did you get hungry and take a big bite out of the bigger flatty? Or did you pull it up like that... looks like a big chunk is missing towards her tail..?
  9. Hey Kiwineill, I also live on the North Shore and the spots other raiders have mentioned are good LB spots suitable for kids. When I am not out the boat and in need of quick fish I head down to Blues Point Reserve. I have seen some big fish caught from here and the other day one bloke was pulling in nice tailor one after the other. The best thing about this spot is it has toilets (like cliftons but dosent get as busy) and also a play ground so if the young bloke gets board of fishing he can keep himself amused while you keep fishing Also another good spot is Narrabeen Lakes if you don’t mind a drive… soft plastics are great in the lake and a number of big flatties come out of there… even the odd jew… Hope this helps mate, and good luck to you both.
  10. hey stacerboy.. nice bag of stripes... do you like them on the plate or just stocking up your bait supplies?? Also, i was looking at your pic and to me it looks like the fish in the bottom row second from the left is a nice looking tailor? It might just be the pic.. plus i havent had my coffee this morning so still half asleep.. Just thought I would check.. Have a good one MPM
  11. Your one keen fisho out in these conditions today Olitay.. Congrats Glad you finally got your keeper... im still yet to get mine this season.. bloody rats.. but can't wait for few seasons and those boys will be HUGE... And those bloody squid, looks like a nice mess to clean up.. or hopefully the rain got most of it off..! Cheers, MPM
  12. G'day.. Have a look in desperate & boatless on this form or post something in there... Im sure you will find a few buddies down your way who would be happy to assist.. by the way
  13. Hi Sally, to fishraider... Check out this link - may help you with a few of your questions. http://www.fishraider.com.au/fishing-artic...ch-kingfish.php And like most of us keep reading this forum and you will learn lots. Cheers, MPM
  14. As always thanks for the tips Jewgaffer, I hope to get out there tomorrow night for my chance - my brother put the excat mark in the GPS so no worries about finding it again now... Might have to leave work early to grab some more servo squid before everone else gets it..! Thanks again and good luck if your wetting a line this weekend. MPM
  15. Hey Raiders, Got a call from my brother yesterday afternoon to say he was heading out on the boat with one of our mates for a few beers and a half hearted fish… I already had plans but my options were: 1 – Stuff my plans and go fishing with the boys for a few hours OR 2 – My misses is buying me a new fishing rod for Christmas so head to the local tackle shop to show her what I want... plus my best friend had just arrived from the US so I had arranged to catch up with her after rod shopping. So, what choice did I make – NUMBER 2.... AND DONT I REGRET IT NOW...!! Anyway the boys went out last night minus me so were not too prepared as I am the crazy fish person and have all the gear, bait, spots etc etc… What they did have was a six pack of beer, K-m++t rod combos and some servo squid… Anyway I gave the boys a quick call around 7.30pm and they had just started a drift over a favorite fishy looking spot in MH which I gave them directions to over the phone earlier – First run they picked up a rock cod and a nice flounder – Second drift nothing.. I told them to hang in there for a while and wait for the tide to rise and they might have a chance of a jew – (that advice came from Jewgaffer & Co so thanks) I told them the best time for Jew’s is the hour or so leading upto high & after... so with hope in there minds they stuck it out for a while longer. I then give the boys a call around 9pm (wishing I was there) to see how they were going… well just as I called I got a MMS through… had a quick look at my phone and what do I see…. This 60cm Jew (roughly) they didn’t have a brag mat… Nice fish for two boys that we only giving it half a shot but I guess that’s fishin… expect the unexpected..!! Was caught in MH on servo squid… So raiders I am sitting at work this morning in a split mind – kicking myself that I was not there because I have never caught the elusive jew before and have tried for so many hours… But very happy that I now have a new spinning rod for Christmas..!! Anyway wish I was putting this report up about me but I just wanted to show you guys out there that’s fishing… you win some you loose some.. Enjoy the weekend raiders… P.S – Got a call this morning to say they also got smoked by a much bigger one around 10pm…!!
  16. Was that your post the other day chopper with the pics of your tank..? Looks very nice...! Mate when u get the insects happening its great fun, as you may know Archer fish actually spit water at the bugs which is pretty amazing to watch.. I hold the bugs about a inch above the water and most times I get squirted with the water..!!! The barra is great, trying to feed him slowly so he dosent get too big too quick but its too much fun watching him smash the live bait...!! I put a smallish yabbie in the tank about a week ago to try clean up some of the crap off the bottom but came home the other day and his belly was huge...!!! - Yabbie gone in one bite!! Will put a post up over the weekend so you can check my bad boy out..
  17. Thanks Mike, I thought that might of been the case, they dont look like they hold much meat - Well the smaller ones anyway... I agree with you Chopper... i have a freshwater fish tank at home with a barra, sleepy cod and archer fish and I definitley dont see myself tucking into a archer fish...!!! Will post some pic's in the coming days of my tank... the barra is impressive - will smash anything you put in there and makes for a great party trick..! Cheers guys, good luck on the water this weekend if you going to wet a line! Matty
  18. Hey raiders, Firstly nice looking bass - very impressive!! I have never really fished for Bass before but after reading many reports on this site I am definitely going to give it a go soon.. My question is it looks like most people release the Bass, are they not good to eat or a protected species...?? Thanks in advance for answering this as I have been thinking about it for weeks.. Cheers MPM
  19. G'day vinni Nice work on the kings - hope to be out there sunday chasing a few. Quick question, I also have a Shimano tld2000 charter special which i brought a few years back - Havent used it much lately and never caught a keeper on it (havent used it much in general) however i want to swich my line to braid... any tips on what line would be best to use..? Thanks mate, again nice work on the kings..
  20. Hey JDC Im luckly enough to work in north sydney with a view over the harbour and I also live around the area - have been running most mornings this week and have seen the bird action most mornings around 6.30am and some times poping back up around 9ish when im at work... If anyone is going out this weekend it might be worth having a run towards the bridge as i have seen the birds working 4 out of 5 monrings this week. But as we all know than can be there one minute and gone the next.. Glad you got into them though...
  21. Hey Shadow I was just floating a tiny piece of squid down and evey drop was a hook up - they were good fun on the hand line - jumping everywhere...
  22. Your right there CFD - I put a few in the live tank and they kicked the bucket not long after - And yeah it took me ages to clean all the scales off the boat floor... Oh well, i have saved myself a few $$$ for bait next time so worth it.
  23. Hey raiders... Went for a late afternoon fish on saturday in the new boat - had the onboard so it was only a short trip to try find a few flatties for dinner.. Thought we would do a few drifts from Grotto pt down towards clontaf - After a couple of drifts and only a few small snapper my brother pulls in a nice sized pilchard - first thought - put him down as a live bait... After a while nothing had touched it but noticed a few more pilchards were coming into the burley trail so thought I would pick a few up for bait for my next fishing trip... Well before I know it we were right in the middle of a school that were going crazy and jumping out of the water all around the boat.. I knew something must of been chasing them and tried everything to hook whatever they were up - I put down a live bait again, tried a strip bait, squid, jigs, flicked a few lures even threw the kitchen sink at them but nothing... Firstly, am I correct thinking that something big would of been chasing them if they were jumping out of the water or is this normal for a school of pilchards..???? – Nothing big was showing on the sounder and I couldn’t really see anything chasing them.. Even though we didnt get to christen the new boat with a keeper it was awsome fun sitting in the middle of a school of fish going nuts... oh and a few on a nice afternoon.. No pics of the pilchards but lets just say I have enough to last me a few trips... Hope everyone else had a good weekend.. Cheers, MPM
  24. A big yes vote from me.. after reading Hodgey's and NickN's posts i went to the local tackle store last night and picked up some 3" and 4" minnows in Pumpkin Seed and Curry Chicken.. Will have a go tomorrow.. Hopefully will pop my plastic cherry...
