  1. Its a tragedy, but one that is probably going to happen more often as more hoons hit the water. It does seem strange that google, abc news and others hasn't posted the story. Can someone post a link if they find it. Rgds Dhutchy
  2. Hey DaveB, thanks for the info, you've made me a very happy camper - however now tells me that she wasn't able to make the booking and puty is full this weekend. But your info will help when we actually do make the trip... Thansk again Regards Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps
  3. G'day Raiders, the family is planning a short camping trip to Putty Beach. I was wondering if any raiders know of the nearest ramp, what's it like, or is the advise leave the boat at home. Also any tips as to what type of fish is running there at the moment will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Regards Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps

Hey Geoff and Roosterman, I will PM Byron, but if you are seeing him could you pass on all of our regard and wish him well... Thanks Dhutchy
  5. Mate, you should also remember that this boat is a big first boat and if its fibreglass will be easily dinged and damaged. You might want to consider an aluminum boat as a first option. They're lighter, usually easier to tow, and usually offer better economies on just about everything they offer. Good luck with it - what ever you buy, get the hull checked and carefully go over the trailer to ensure its in good working order Rgds Dhutchy
  6. G'day JET01, boat electrics are a rule unto themslves and once the gremlins start happening, if you are a novice its almost worthwhile cutting to the chase and finding a "good" sparky (boat electrician) and getting it fixed. I am like you mate, relatively new at boating and I wouldn't rate myself as a sparky at all. Boat wiring, batteries, and electrics are always going to be tricky because they are exposed to a harsh salt laden envrionment, the connections get thumped around, batteries sometimes dont run as often as they should, and we don't replace fuses until we have to. Also, the wiring in a boat, or at least in my boat, just doesn't look straight forward. My problems are pretty much solved. But this was after using a battery checker, multi meter and a continutity test with a light, and checking cables, connections and fuses, and output from the battery. Eventually i traced the problem to a faulty fuse or two. It was around that time also I replaced my bait tank pump. Also, my humminbird sound is removable, so I took it out and cleaned all the connections. And after all that things are working. My only prob now is that I have installed a GME 300 marine radio, which has been verifed by the factory as working, but I can't get the damn thing to receive. Good Luck - remember check all the conections, fuses, outputs, and hopefuully the process of eliminuation will produce the error. Cheers Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps

    Radio Gaga

Hi ya Raiders, I um solved the mystery of the GME GX 300 Marine/CB radio not working. After a few telephone calls, and a visit to GME offices in Ryde, and much patience from GME Tecchies, it was revealed that the problem was not the unit, but a Mug User (me). After installing the unit I conducted driveway tests with my handheld and 4WD CBs attempting to communicate with the new flash radio. The new radio didn't transmit or receive to or from these units. Because both of the CBs are UHF RADIOS which work beneath the GME 300's 27mhz spectrum. I am probably the only knucklehead likely to make this mistake, but just in case there other radio novices, ensuring compatability between the radios your testing can save a lot of bother. The on water test should prove, as all other indications suggest, that the GME 300 is working fine. Rgds Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps

    Radio Gaga

G'Day Byron, good to hear from you. I have just passed this note onto the venerable Mr Geoff. I will certainly be interested in his view. The GME did not come with its own aerial. I am using the relatively new one I already had - but I reckon it must be a contender for being faulty - which probably means the old unit wasn't faulty it was the antenna. I know, think Zen, breath, think Zen and breath. Regards mate David

Reading the manual's fine print, I notice that it says the Antenna for Marine, won't work well for CB. So I guess that might translate to not at all...and test the unit next time I am on the water... Thanks Dhutchy

Gummybuster, that's right but the GME 300, doubles as a CB, at least that is what the manual says. "The GX300 is capable of operating on both the Australian 27mhz Marine Band and the Australian 27mhz Citizens Band....To Sledcte the 27mhz CB band, the the radio off then press and hold the 88/PRI key while turning the radio on again. The radio will now display channels 1-40 and default to road CH8." Gummybuster, I keep thinking the probelm must be antenna based... Rgds Dhutchy

G'day Raiders, do ya ever have a day when everything that is supposed to work doesn't. Yesterday, I had boat radio, home office computer, wife's computer, slow cooker, and Omega Watch plus I even broke the garden rake. So anyway, the boat radio. I am hoping raiders who are smarter than I will be able to set me right. Old Radio 6 years plus not transmitting, under any conditions and in plain site of the Cottage Point Coast Guard operation. Bought GME 300, 27meg replacement. Installed. All seems to be working, if receiving a very odd religious sermon on Ch 14 is working. This unit is also CB unit. Test for transission and recieve from 4WD CB in driveway. No Joy. Nothing. I am guessing the fault lies in the plug that fits between radio and antenna cable...What do you guys reckon. 12. Hey Trapper, I would suggest the MIL already glows in the dark, but she was doing that well before she met me. No, No she's really terrific, no really. And you're right I am buggered. Dhutchy

  14. Hey Trapper Tom, thanks for supplying the information I was seeking. Your post was exactly what I was searching for and fortunately indicates that I haven't, at least not yet anyways , poisoned the inlaws, who I often pass any fish I keep. Thanks for your response, mate. Rgds Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps.
  15. Thanks Greg and Jeff, you two are obviously good indicators of the harbour's health Rgds Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps
  16. G'day Raiders, I have seen this topic raised before and admit to not taking too much notice as most of my fishing was out of harbour. But I am doing more now and am curious, so my question is. Where in Sydney Harbour is it safe to eat the fish you catch? I have heard of some spots like around Homebush are no good - but I don't fish there anyway. So I will be interested in any replies. Thanks everyone Rgds Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps
  17. Hey Ritchie you might also try searching Hawkesbury or Mooney Mooney Creek. Are you landbased or with boat? You can hire a little boat from the marina at Bobbin Head. If you have your own boat you will have to launch from Appletree Bay, which you get to as you go through Bobbin Head. I have fished out of Appletree for a while, but theorecticaly you can catch all of standards - flatties, bream, snapper, and even the odd jew fish. Although I haven't seen or heard of anyone catching jewies in the Bobbin Head section of the system, and you tend to do better as move down the system towards Cottage Point, Jerusalem Bay and Flint and Steel. Copy and paste the link below to get a google maps map or picture of the area - I don't know how to include the pic in this post. Sorry. 18. Thanks Groper and Jewhunter, it was just one of those magic days. The six year old had to be cool and smug and the 4 year old danced. Magic. Rgds Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps
  19. Kissing Point Boat Ramp on Low Tide Sux

  20. Hi Raiders, I usually sign off with its not just about catching fish, but it helps. Well today, and our two boys and I ventured out from Kissing Point. We launch and spy a fellow fisho's not able to keep hubby's boat going. It would start it would die. So I jumped aboard, and no matter what we tried, as soon as it got into gear it died so we towed her back to the pontoon, so hubby could work the magic. We motored down to Spectacle island, which is the small one just near Cockatoo, and the six year old pulled out a baby snapper which was thrown back. We then headed over to Waverton and the six year old pulled out a 60CM Flattie :(see the pic) Then the four year old pulls out his personal best snapper , which was just shy of being legal, and the missus pulled out a stonkin very legal bream. All I managed was a flimsy flounder . We then motored over to the cruise ships moored near Darling Harbour, munched our prefabbed lunch thanks to wonderful wife, whizzed upto Taronga, showed the boys a tall ship and pretty much headed back to Kissing Point. It was low tide and we had to retrieve the boat from Kissing Point Ramp, which doesn't have a cleaning table of any description. But that ramp at low water is a nightmare. The first retrieve didn't get the boat centred so we had to do it again. who was driving couldn't even see the trailer the properly, there are two black marks, pointing out where you should back to, but these are painted on the hand rail on the pontoon It took three attempts, and three locals, providing advice to get the trailer, which is pretty low slung, deep enough to haul the boat up. One of them even joined me, wetting his jeans to above the knee, in strong arming the boat as steered it on, but it was pretty dodge there for a while. Without his help I reckon we would have been waiting on a tide change. So if he is out there thanks very much. We offered them all our catch for the day, but they declined. So the day started off with us helping out some fishos, having a wonderful day on the harbour, and then getting some help back from some very friendly fishos at the ramp. What goes around comes around. Rgds Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish but it helps.

    Which Weather

Hey Raiders, this is obviously a topic close to all our hearts. Flightmanager gets the :074: Laugh Out Loud award. Thanks for all your all replies. Maybe the Mods or Admin, could provide the feedback contained in this thread as a gentle query to the folks at Seabreeze. I have bought some string, booked marked willyweather , will look out the window, check the other sites, and probably still go fishing unless its blowing dogs of chains, or raining cats and dogs. Which Weather

Hey BFB,dunc333, Geoff, you're right, you're right, you're bloody well right and you have a bloody right to say. Like you Geoff, I use BOM and Seabreeze, but it ticks me off, when both of them are way off the mark. Dunc333, I reckon you might have the right idea - get a whiz bang weather station and use it as well as all other services and you might have a chance of being 50 percent right. I reckon I just have to chuckle at the irony of hearing sciencetists telling us what the storms are (allegedly) doing on Mars!or being able to impersonate the big bang that started the universe in a machine that spans 27kms and two countries, but we just can't get the weather in Sydney right. Like what else am I going to do.. Regards all Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps.

    Which Weather

Hey Bisso and Cut Loose, thanks for your responses. I have booked marked the site you listed Bisso. It gets worse doesn't it. I often listen to the radio AND I regularly check the WEATHER CHANNEL on Foxtel, which allegedly offers a "current" local snapshot, with radar and all sorts of up to the minute reporting. I have found often that the reports don't match what's on the water or the land for that matter. Recently, when torrential rain was pouring down my street so much so that YANKO Rd, West Pymble was closed, neither the Weather Channel or the NEWS reported any where like "as it was happening"and it wasn't until the next day that the measure of the storm was reported. Which Weather

Hiya Raiders, its probably picking nits, but I have just checked the forecasts for tomorrow at the Bureau of Meteorology site by clicking on the useful link above and I have checked Seabreeze by clicking its link. One suggests 10/15 knots of wind and Swell to 2m, while the other is 8 knots and 1.3m waves. Which is more likely to be on the money, or do you just average it out? Monday's Schedule from BOM: Monday: Wind: S/SE 10/15 knots.Sea: less than 1 metre. Swell: SE 1 to 2 metres. 17-23 Monday's Schedule from SeaBreeze: ESE/S/SW/E 8knots, 1.3m waves 17-23 cloudy Regards Dhutchy Its not just about catching fish, but it helps
