Hey Oscar you sure mate? It had a lot of bronze colour in it which I thought indicated a threadie rather than a blue. Anyone else have any thoughts? Either way happy with the result! Cheers

Threadfin was unfortunately just short of legal, which is 60cms. I've heard they're a good table fish. Never extensively targeted jew in nsw to be honest..but change of state change of luck may be the way to go!

Hi Raiders Having just moved to Brisbane from Sydney thought I'd take the opportunity to get a few sessions in and have a crack at catching a couple of species I've never managed to and boy it didn't disappoint. First night right at the top of high tide the rod buckled over and after a solid fight on relatively light gear I managed my first ever mulloway at 65cms. Not a huge fish but I was stoked regardless. Quick photo and off he swam. Next first was what I was told by a fellow fisho there he was a black spotted grunter of 30cms - when unhooking him got the reasoning behind the name. Wild pigs make less noise! Didn't get a photo sorry. With all that going on I had to have another crack the following night. Again didn't disappoint as I got a nice bream and another first...this time a 55cm threadfin salmon! Great fish with some acrobatics and plenty of short powerful bursts of speed. All up a great couple of nights fishing in the sunny state! Cheers, TG

After a long day at work made a late decision to wander down for a "flick". Not a bad stretch landbased, plenty of rocks, timber etc for the "perch" to hide. Arrived around 6.30pm to find the weather had turned a little chilly and a bit of wind. First half hour, had maybe one bump on the spinnerbait. While I was spinning parallel to the bank, which is key here due to the great structure to be found, thought given the conditions maybe slowing the retrieve down might be the go. Two out of the next four casts produced a 38cm model, followed by his mate who went 40cms. Called it a day as the light was fading. TG

Funny you say that Chris the point of this mornings sesh was to try to get some bully mullet as I'm down Cronulla way for the next 3 days with the plan to fish Wanda beach for jewies. BTW you still get the occassional red belly don't worry about that. Just think it was the wrong time of the day for the mullet, always find mid morning or mid afternoon best personally. I've fished for carp with worms and bread before just find the corn more effective. TG

G'day Got up nice and early this morning and decided to head down the river. Idea was to target some mullet for a bit of fun, and while I'm playing around with the float fishing thing I'd take another rod down and toss out a corn bait then put it in a holder with a bell on top. Short of wearing a "save the bass" tshirt I don't mind knocking a couple of carp over the noggin for the good of the waterway. Anyway the mullet aren't happening after what seemed like a loaf of bread chucked in, I'm preparing to bait my hook with some quality dough prepared earlier when the carp rod absolutely bends over in the rod holder. Grabbed it and then ping..pulled up line only..sinker,swivel,hook, leader all gone. It was a rig still set up from last year and I haven't checked it...you lazy dope I thought. Anyway rerigged the lot, new string of corn on the hook and back in. Still no mullet, but then the carp rod starts doing some odd things, little dings from the bell, little tiny pulls on the line, I'm thinking eel, then the line slowly goes out and the rod slowly buckles. I grab it and there's some weight - big eel perhaps? Nah I'd say charlie swallowed some of edgells finest kernels and didn't realise the suprise within and once I cranked the reel once or twice he's off zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I've got 12lb mono on this reel and a 10lb leader, so I had to be patient. I've caught big carp before and usually two runs and then it's goodnight, but this guy had other ideas. Battled the big boy for a good 10 mins before landing him.. he went a metre long (the foot in the first photo is 33cms, and the net is 115cms long) and must have weighed minimum 8-9kgs. Such a shame a large beast like that isn't even suitable as cat food.... Cheers TG

Hey mate Should also point out no craft/vessel of any kind at Thompsons allowed, bank fishing only though you'd probably work that out after the 10 minute walk from the car park (the gate is shut to the dam except for security). Cheers TG

Not wrong there Nortons Basin is a tough climb back up. Gets harder every year. Nice spot though and plenty of rapids and pools to get a decent bass. TG

Top fish there mate, a real cracker for the nepean. Without giving your spot away was it around Penrith? They're doing an upgrade to the fish ladder at Penrith weir and I thought it might be impossible for them to get further than that

I caught a bully mullet on a jitterbug once fishing for bass, as soon as it hit the surface he smashed it but I've never done it since. I agree Jewiehaven best fun is the old bread burley with dough on the hook on a float. TG

Yeah it's definately a Cyprinidae (same family as carp) goldfish, i've caught a couple in lyell myself, usually on the worms. Near the farmers creek arm you can see schools of them in the water at times. tg

I recently saw a fishing program that mentioned research into the possibilty of EP's and bass inter-breeding. I've caught a couple of bass in the nepean that looked a bit ep-like in the head. Pretty interesting but then again I don't have much on TG

Awesome catch of trout there mate, have fished that exact spot myself, got a PB of 43cms. Might look at heading soon, looks like it's starting to fire again. That servo and cafe is nice and handy for sure... Are there any browns in lyell, we always seem to get rainbows? TG

Hey Glenn I tend to find the best sessions for carp are start of spring and mid autumn. Right when the water temp comes up and before it gets cold. They seem to feed right up before winter and right after. I got one a few days ago on dough on a float (was mullet fishing) he was about two to three kgs, but in September I got two at about 8 kilos on sweetcorn bottom fishing. It is fishing which at times requires patience and long hours - that's my experience! Cheers Tommy

Just put my NO vote in. I reckon the sooner THAT party is banned from politics the better we'll all be. They are nothing more than extremists - remember this was the party that wanted to legalise ecstatsy and other outrageous policies. If they ran this country we'd all be living in caves.... TG

G'day Dave Hit that same area a couple of weeks ago with similar results - 6 small fish with a couple not much bigger than the lure. There's some nice rocks and natural structure they hide under on that side. Very frustrating season so far on the nepean bass wise, but I've had good results with other species - some good size freshwater mullet and big carp up to 8 kgs. Cheers Tommy

G'day mate Apart from Bass you can get carp, bully mullet, freshwater mullet, eel tailed catfish, eels and a mate of mine once got a bullrout on a lure - don't touch em if you get one though! On a side note I went for a bass fish down at Norton's basin and had the same luck I have had all season - 5 small fish, two not much bigger than the diver I was using. Where have all the big bass gone folks? TG

Hi All Just got back from the nepean myself - got 5 small bass including two that would have been just a little bigger than the lure. To be honest so far this season that's all I've gotten in the bass stakes - fish no bigger than 25cms max. A mate of mine told me apparently there is a broken/inaccessable fish ladder the water board are trying to fix up the Hawkesbury somewhere - anyone else heard this? Last year me and my mates picked up several decent size bass - not so this year. One of my mates got 8 in a session recently but no more than 20cms. And you're right chopper - that boat ramp can be frustrating to try to access on a weekend, a mate of mine had a boat and it once took us about 1 and a half hours to get back in! TG

Hey John Mate I find corn works best if you're just targetting carp, I usually use a sinker with the bait sitting on the bottom as carp are predominately bottom feeders but you can use a float - i have seen them feeding off the surface. Soft dough for mullet with a float. That's about it. Other people may have different ideas, I've heard lucheon meat (only ever caught eels with that option), worms etc TG

G'day raiders Went down the nepean with a mate to give this mullet fishing a crack. Landed this freshwater mullet (my first) down by the weir and also two smaller bully mullet further up. My mate picked up two good size freshwater mullet also. Pretty enjoyable session and gee they go alright for their size.. Sorry about the close up, it's a terrible head. The mullet I mean. Cheers TG
