  1. yeah mine is fine as long as I dont do anything stupid and remember that there is a problem. An orthopedic surgeon told me that to fix my problem they woud have to shave some off my shoulder blade to allow the tendons and ligaments to pass through the joint as there wasnt proper space there and when I forget the problem and try to lift something heavy( usually above my head is the problem) it simply pinches and tears the tendons. Mine has been fixed with physio but it really is only a band aid fix so consequently I have had to change professions to something less physically demanding ( if it gets any less I wont be able to call it work SHH!) when he told me it was 6months off work in rehab I laughed and said thats 12mths if i fix both shoulders so he said change professions, so now i work in a club and love it, nowhere near as stressful as working for yourself and they actually pay me to take holidays and when I am sick I stay home and they pay me for that too!! should have done it years earlier!

hope your better soon and back giving the bream and blackies a hiding!

  2. my condolences cath, I lost my dad about 5years ago and I still miss him. I was extremely lucky to have my dad out in the boat with me a couple of months prior to his passing and he witnessed me hooking and landing a 22lb jewfish and the memory of him being there with me will stay with me forever. I am sure that you too have some great memories of your dad also as he sounds like a wonderful man.

good luck with the future and keep your chin up- time has a way of healing.

  3. good luck roberta, I feel your pain. I have had rotor cuff problems most of my life and have to be very carful how i lift things so I dont tear the tendons etc, however mine is all ok at the moment and obviously havent had to have surgery yet like yourself , but unless you have had this problem it is hard to imagine the pain it causes when you reach to grab something ouch! hope your ok and back on the water soon.

you are right - growing old sucks!

  5. this is very sad news. the first time I spoke to byron over the phone my mobile went flat!! when I finally rang him back he laughed and said that everyone complains of the same problem. byron certainly was a character and will be missed on fishraider, what he didnt know about catching jewfish wasnt really worth knowing. my thoughts are with shirley and the rest of the family. RIP.

  6. Hi guys I went out for a flick in the harbour on friday last week and didnt arrive until around lunchtime because of domestic duties, by the time I arrived the wind was just starting to pick up but I decided to give it a shot anyway. the fishing was very slow with quite a few small picks at the plastic and no hookups. I only managed 2 fish but what I lacked in quantity I made up for in quality. The first fish came after about 2 hours when a solid flathead finally grabbed the lure and after a nervous battle with 6lb vanish leader I finally netted a beautiful 60cm fish. the second fish came about 1 hour later on the very first cast at a new spot, it hit like a train and sped off peeling line from the reel at a great rate of knots and I immedietly thought jew but the head shakes felt a little different then the fight became very different also and it just slugged away down deep in a slow moving way that made me then think maybe a big lizard. I was pleasently surprised when a flash of pink surfaced and a very nice 45cm snapper came up!! I whipped the water to foam with my casting after that for the next 1/2 hour but that was all, anyway I went home very pleased with my efforts.

I also caught 7 flathead at wisemans ferry the week before on plastics but didnt take any photos - sorry. those fish were caught at the windsock and they were all around the 50cm mark.

  7. Recon I've been across broken bay over 40 times, yet to see a dolphin there ,went to port Stephens few weeks ago saw four pods in one day, love to know what's going on.

when I fished flint and steel while i was staying at patonga in november a lone dolphin cruised past me on the last afternoon that I was there. First time I have ever seen them in the hawkesbury.- also jeff -(Days fishin) I dont think the kingies were anywhere near as plentiful then as they are now in sydney harbour since the trawlers disappeared. ( just my opinion), however I totally agree with your assumption of the hawkesbury I stopped fishing bar point 15yrs ago for exactly the reasons you talked about but I have caught plenty of quality fish since at lesser known spots. - the fish are still there in my opinion.

  8. that is a cracker of a fish no doubt about it - but 25kg??? 2.2lb to the kg makes it around 55lb - would say 30lb maybe 35lb would be a lot closer which means converted back into kg brings it in at around13 to 15kg. very nice fish just the same and congratulations to your mate !

  9. Pete are there any mud crabs at WF at the moment? Normally if you see floats and the salt has travelled that far they are. I'm on my way there now. Will try for a Jewie like that myself.

I havent fished there for a while but I spoke to my son tonight and he didnt mention that he encountered any??? he did tell me that there are plenty of fish around though. he lost a pretty good fish on friday night and landed a nice 55cm model on saturday night as well as plenty of smaller jew and some nice bream and flathead, he also mentioned that there were plenty of small tailer up the river and he believes that a small tailor may have nicked his trace on friday night and that is why the line broke! he is now using a heavier trace instead of the same line straight through!

  12. gday raiders, my daughter got married on 10/11/12 and the wedding was just beautiful (and so was my daughter)and the reception went off a treat with everyone dancing , drinking and having fun until around midnight, after the wedding I headed up for 4 days at patonga from tuesday and came home this morning, and although it was very relaxing ( when it wasnt raining or windy) all was a bit quite on the fishing front. My partner rosetta was only able to swing tuesday and wednesday off work so from wednesday night I was on my pat malone. Tuesday saw us arrive around lunch time and set up camp battling the wind. After a cuppa we drove into town and went shopping as it was far to windy to be out on the water. Finally around 10pm the wind died down to a little more than a cyclone so we decided to have a crack at fishing. we dropped the boat in at the ramp in patonga creek and the back of the boat crashed onto the concrete ramp with a crunch!!! oops! we chugged out through the creek mouth and started heading towards juno point, half way along I noticed that the boat was struggling to plane and on closer inspection noticed the boat was half full of water...WTF?? I immediately thought that the hull was damaged when we launched but then realised that the scoop for the live bait tank was filling into the tank, and the tank had no bung in it,so the water was pouring straight out on to the floor!!after bailing out for 5 mins and unplugging the hose we set off again. We fished for about two hours with squid, hoping for a nice big jew and due to my own stupidity I lost what was undoubtably the fish of the trip. Rosetta had caught a catfish on one of the small rods with a prawn and as I had my head down and bum up scratching around for a pair of long handled plyers to get it off, I heard a groaning noise like a tree about to snap in the wind and realised that one of my rods was bent over almost touching the water and line was being pulled off what was obviously a very tight drag. Just as I went to grab the rod POP!!

I didnt check the drag before fishing and I dont understand how it happened but the drag was done up so tight that I couldnt even pull line with my hand....gggrrr! what a great start to the trip. To add salt into the wound when we arrived back at the creek mouth the large tide had left the creek basically landlocked, with just a trickle of water flowing out, so I had to take the boat out at dark corner and walk back to the camp ground to get the car and trailer. The weather was pretty crappy for most of the trip and I spent a fair bit of time battling the elements and in amongst it I only managed a couple of small fish a few small jew and flathead and the occasional small bream. fed up with it all on friday morning I didnt even get out of bed until around 10am, then around midday, miraculously the wind dropped and a little bit of sun was peaking through the clouds so I quickly put the boat in and headed straight over to flint and steel. The water was glassed off and although I had just missed the turn of tide it was only just starting to run out and things looked fishy. Within 10 mins I had a legal snapper and a nice bream in the boat then the current started to pick up and the bites disappeared so I headed up to cowan to fish the slower running water during the big tide. I managed 4 or 5 small soapys and a couple of small bream but nothing legal, then back to flint and steel for the next turn of tide. finally some success! I managed 10 jew all between 46 and 53cm. I threw back all but 3 and got back to the ramp in torrential rain just as the thunder and lightning arrived... scary stuff!

  14. rosetta and I spent 300 on trying to jag a trifecta and the closest we got was 5th!!!then 7th and who knows after that!! I actually liked mourayan and thought that coming from barrier 3 it would get the run of the race and I was right - the only problem was it kind of went the wrong way down the straight and didnt finish the 2 miles very strongly!

grrrrreen moon!!!! I gave it no chance over two miles after the cox plate failure, it was one of the favourites up to that point and like an idiot I did what everyone else did and wrote it off - I think I will stick to fishing for a while!

next year I might throw a dart at the form guide!

  15. sensational report mate. persistence really paid off for you. every trip that you have success you will gain more knowledge, I would be fishing that spot of yours on a regular basis and you will find that it will consistantly produce jew fish - it certainly isnt a fluke that they are there if you have caught them on two different occassions. dont be frightened to lift anchor and idle after a big fish rather than go harder if you have to, far better to be inconvenienced for a while than lose the fish of a lifetime. well done.
