  1. hi raiders, I have been a bit quite lately on the fishing scene as I have had plenty to do at home - cleaning out the shed and building shelves, same in the laundry as well as my son getting married and my mum moving into aged care, ..... anyway I finally had reached my limit and told my partner that this weekend I was heading out for a fish and she agreed that I had earned enough points, so I rang my fishing mate joe to see if he was available on friday night , his reply was - I would love to but we are flying out to Hawaii on friday at 2pm!! Anyway knowing joe to be a fishing tragic like myself I suggested that thursday night was a possibility after I finished work but as we wouldnt be able to get on the water until around 11pm it would be an all nighter. After thinking about my offer for all of about 3 seconds joe replied- I suppose I could sleep on the plane!

So the plan was hatched and we met at the ramp at drummoyne around 11pm and headed out to our spot. It didnt take long for the first fish to come on board, a small jew of just legal size. I decided to do the right thing and release the fish hoping that the fish gods would be pleased and reward us with a bountiful catch, and it worked! we ended up having a very good night landing 10 jew most of the fish were around 52 - 53cm nothing to write home about but a jew is a jew. at one stage we even had a double hook up and later in the night joe landed a very nice 73cm fish. Around that same time one of my rods screamed off but unfortunately I was unable to hook up. we decided to swim one of the smaller fish at that point and release it incase some bigger specimens were hanging around but unfortunately joes 73cm fish was the last fish of the night and we ended up going home with 8 jew after releasing 2. Sorry I didnt take any photos this time as my mobile was running flat by the end of the night.

    cheers pete.

  2. ok i am really getting tired of waisted all night sessions without even the slightest possibility of me pulling up that first jew. I have been trying for a year now, waitinf for tides and moons to be right, fresh squid, live yakkas, everything that i can think of when catching jew!!! I live in hunters hill and have fished spots like pulpit point, abbotsford, huntleys point and drummoyne ferry wharf. You name it!! I just dont know what i am doing wrong... I am at the extent where i am going to just change target species:( even when i have hooked on to something decent when going for jewies i end up with 40cm bream and i am getting sick of bream.. Any advice from people that have been more fortunate would be absolutely great. Spots, bait, rigs, best times.. anything!!

    Cheers

gday mate I fish for jew quite a bit in your area and do quite well. At the moment its a bit too cold at night for my liking and although the fish are probably still there i imagine they would be a little more scarce at this time of year compared to the warmer months. when it warms up a little more around october I will send you a Pm and organise a night out with you in my boat if your keen and show you how , where I fish etc and hopefully put you on to a fish or two.

    talk soon.

  3. that was absolute GOLD !! tony, easily the best post I have read in a long time. I laughed so hard I had tears, and the whole time I pictured my own kids at that age - some things never change, so typical of young brother and sister antics. Mind you my kids are 28 and 25 and at times the rivalry is still there!

great report mate and thank you so much for sharing.

  4. gday mate nice to finally meet up in person! a fun weekend was had by all involved and plenty of laughs. I didnt catch any hairys either but alan ( A.Dawg ) who fished on my boat managed 3 ! I landed a nice 60cm flathead and a couple of port jackson sharks on fri night and a just legal bream on saturday so that was better than nothing I suppose. Glad to hear that you and lisa had a good time after making the huge effort and coming from bathurst.

  5. in my humble opinion squirt worms will out fish any other bait by 4 fish to 1!!!! but only for some reason during daylight hours - dont ask me why I have no explanation, maybe someone could explain to me!

go to the trouble of finding an area where you can pump some -you wont regret it.

short of that, the next best bait in my opinion would be live nippers, followed by a fresh peeled prawn.

  7. Great work Pete, you and your buddy did well, funny story too..

    Congrats...

thanks ray, its amazing how fish pick the most inopportune time to bite! always when your on the phone. making a cuppa, rolling a smoke or trying to rig another rod ! I swear that sometimes they can see us and deliberately catch us off guard.

  8. hi raiders I had an RDO yesterday so a plann was hatched to have a jew bash with a mate of mine who is on holidays at the moment.

I wasn't sure how good it would be at this time of year as I dont normally go when it starts getting into june as it gets a bit cold, however I was pleasantly surprised!

We arrived at our spot around 6.30 amd pulled the pin around 10.30pm and ended up with 3 very nice jew . The first jew hit around 8.30pm on my rod and went a nice 71cm. after measuring the fish and throwing it in the esky I baited up and settled down to catch another one. After a couple of minutes I decided to ring my partner, Rosetta ,and let her know of our success, and as the phone was ringing the same rod buckled over! From that point on for the next few minutes there was complete chaos as I tried to put the phone somewhere safe . grab the rod. and stop it from running around the other lines. Unbeknown to me I hadn't hung up the phone and while all this was happening Rosetta was on the other end of the phone laughing with absolutely no idea why I rang her. When I finally spoke to her a couple of minutes later she said that all she could hear was F###, sh##, grab that, move that, f###!!!shine the torch, sh##! - anyway I ended up landing the fish and it was almost the same size at 70cm.

half an hour later john got a good bite and struck but came up empty, but his patience was soon rewarded with the best fish of the night at 73cm!

    my 2 fish.

the rest of the photos have to go on seperate pages as I cant work out how to get them small enough to fit on one page.

  9. I too have got squirt worms in the georges river on pretty much any sandy shoreline upstream from picnic point, there are surprisingly plenty in the hawkesburys upper reaches also around laughtondale if you can find some sandy shoreline that isnt too muddy underneath.some of the creeks could be worth a shot also if they have sandy shores, I have got a few on the sandy beach next to the ferry but there isnt too many at that spot. Just use a yabby pump, when you find them it isnt uncommon to get 6 or 7 in one pump!

    good luck

  10. What a catch :1yikes::1yikes::1yikes:

Excellant by-catch.Just never know what to expect when your goal was the mighty mulloway.

Peter you must have a stock of jewels from all those fish your catching. :1fishing1: Great work guys.

    Chris.

gday chris - I dont bother collecting the jewels - too much hard work digging them out , usually in the dark when your tired after a long night.

  11. by the way Pete, that Hairtail may just explain why my leader was snapped off.

gday basil, I think that leader you were using was probably faulty as it snapped when you were tying the hook on, but you never know? there have been quite a few large tailor lately also so who knows.

  12. nice fish mate 9kg is nothing to sneeze at! I feel your pain on losing the bigger one! I lost 3 big ones right near the boat at south west rocks about 10yrs ago and it still hurts to think about it. Even though I did catch a 20lber that night, the ones I lost were much bigger.

At least you got one fish that was decent size, congrats.

    pete.
