  1. Nice work mate. Kiwi fishing is off the hook when you are with the right guys. I am heading over later in the year, can you let me know the name of the charter operator at the Bay of Islands? Also when you go back consider White Island, southwest of Auckland, appartently the kings there are ridiculous. Take it east mate.
  2. JAYSUS, that is a monster hoodlum. I thought they only got that big in NZ. Very very very very jealous. Well done.
  3. hmm, cheers for the info. Will definitely look into it.
  4. No way mate!! That is exactly where i was fishing. I was on the north side of the casino on the left as you come into the lower car park. Where were you? Any crocs? 20 each session is impressive. I have one spot over at Bellerive that regularly had flatties smashing chop meat at the surface in a about a metre of water. I plan to go over there next time and see if it still produces. I know what you mean about the zinc works but when you are only eating them rarely the risk is negligible. I wouldnt eat them every day though, and lets be honest Flatties are a delicious table fish. Thankfully all the Hobart councils have teamed up to try and clean up the river but a lot of the initial damage was done in the bad old days of the zinc works. Cheer for the reply mate, Good luck on the water!! Duncs
  5. Totally agree with all that has been said. We have also added sinkers wrapped in mesh to assist but if you are in deep water and the current is running it can be difficult to get them to stay put. If you are boating away and the milk bottle is standing on its lid this generally means you have not used enough rope. The bottle should be casually sitting in the water or under slight tidal effects BUT not sitting upright.
  6. Gday Raiders, I am originally from Tassie and spent my youth (8-15) fishing for flatties in the Derwent River. Back in the day I used a nice Jerwis Walker combo, a cheap beef chop for bait and really didnt worry about the type or strength of line i had. Those were the days. I return to Tassie a couple of times a year and last week wondered why in the last 15 years I had not wet a line in the trusty old Derwent. The reason is partly relo bashing, but usually not much of that happening at dawn, and given that in Hobart most places are 5-10 mins from the Derwent really there is no excuse. So off I went and picked a couple of cheap Daiwa combos and some Gulp light pink plastics. Hit the spot around 8am at a fullish tide and "thud" on my second cast landed a nice flattie. 2 hours later we had 5 keepers (note that there is no legal size in tassie but I can assure all but one would be keepers in NSW - many went back and if the smallest fish was caught 5th and not 2nd it would have gone back too). They just couldnt resist the pink gulp (good recommendation from the local tackle store) and my brother in law and I had a great session. The only downside was that my bro didnt get a touch even though he was using exactly the same gear, with exactly the same lure, from exactly the same location. We even swapped spots every time a fish came in. Shows that there is definitely some luck involved even when flattie fishing. By the end I was praying for him to catch one but alas it never happened. It was also the first time my niece had been fishing and she (at 3) was more than a little critical of Dad. Lol. Anyway, if you are ever in Hobart chuck a line in. There are no crowds, lots of flatties and it is a great place to fish. Laters Duncs
  7. nice work on the kingies mate. Do you downrig the squid or just troll near the surface? We havent been crabbing the last couple of weeks but had some good success in Pittwater and the Hawkebury over the last couple of months. October we got a lot of pregnant females so they had to go back. December is prime time for blue swimmers so you should have some luck, particularly if your kingie success is anything to go by. Good luck.
  8. nice work mate, will have to look out for those plastics.
  9. Had a rubbish day in Pittwater yesterday. With the bonito supposedly around trolled some splices around the headlands with no success. Headed into Pittwater and did some drifts targeting lizards but were continually smashed by undersized snapper. Caught a few squid but no luck under the boat when we hooked up a livie. Only just managed to save face with the ladies as we did get a couple of large blue swimmers for the eski. Overall though a pretty tough day at the office.......
  10. Hey mate, any advice on where is a good place for squid right now in the Hawesbury/Pittwater system. We have been picking up the odd one recently but never enough for a decent kingie hunt. Some advice would be well appreciated. Cheers, duncs
  11. gday mate, Three weeks ago we got some nice flatties near the railbridge. Three caught on pillies and one on a soft plastic. We also lost a decent one at the boat that was on a plastic. All of them were caught in relatively shallow water. Also had a great day in Brisbane waters the other day (refer to my post from yesterday). Good luck!
  12. Gday guys, This is my first fishing report since joining Fishraider. Defo looks like there is a lot of good advice to be found reading the reports going around. Good to be onboard. Had a great day on Friday fishing Brisbane Waters from the boat. Nine species were taken in total with keeper flatties, bream, whiting, squid and blue swimmers. Made for an excellent fishermans basket lunch on Saturday. We even caught a puffer fish on a soft plastic. Gave the boys a laugh for sure. It is certainly true that you can catch anything on soft plastics. I would upload a photo but keep getting errors...... Had one monster hooked up that took a ganged pillie in the channel. Took serious amounts of line off my reel on its first run. Got a few metres back but they the braid snapped and I was left to rue my eagerness to get the fish to the boat. Certainly didnt show the patience required for a fish that was probably far bigger than the rating of the gear I was using. I will certainly post some pics when I can get the site to upload them. Cheers Duncs
