  1. Hi mate, With your rigs for the alvey, always use the top swivel, as mentioned above. I also have found it is very important to use the smallest swivel you can to suit your line, as a larger swivel may not take out the twist if the line is too small to turn it. Check out the Alvey website, or the brochure that came with your reel for sizes of swivels too. good luck.
  2. Gday gotta love the hot tucker during a session at this time of year! pretty sure that's an 'old wife" maybe juvenile. info here...http://australianmuseum.net.au/Old-Wife-Enoplosus-armatus-White-1790 cheers.
  3. Thanks for your suggestions guys, longer term you are spot on Slinky.
  4. hello, i was out on some rocks the other day tryin to convince some yakka to give themselves up on my bait jigs. The rod bent, reel went off, and i was on. i've been tyin my own bait rigs for a while, the rocks generally are pretty dear to fish otherwise. so i have three hooks in ten pound leader off 12 pound kokoda gtr line, and i was thinkin it mite ha been a king woofed a yakka but....no its not doin that. then i wonder how do i keep the other hooks from snagghin the ledge ( three no. 8 hooks on about 6 foot of leader) anyway, after shaftin around abit , i was lucky enuf to bring up this pig, in the pic thats a blackkfish rod, an alvey 500a, and i have big hands, the fish was about 45 or so. great fun, and tasted unreal.
  5. Hello fishos, Firstly, I have to say i enjoy salmon heaps. The catching, how good can they carry on. And the eating...but i won't be tryin to convince anyone to eat them, just keep putting them back in the water boys and girls. Don't ask me for recipe... So this topic caught my attention. And, as a tie in, so did the closure of Cronulla fisheries centre. Like a good fella I pay my license fee and wonder why there are no inspectors at The Entrance ever when the hordes are there, but rarely think about fisheries, being a rock/beach fisho round the Central Coast. So, when i read the media release about the salmon I delve a bit deeper, and send an email to the fisheries info line requesting the research referred to in the media release. What a pleasure to receive three emails from various staff members THE SAME DAY with links to the research, the species info pages and other stuff. Now, i am up to page 60 odd of a 250odd page report on the salmon research. It is complex. It is carried out with at least some of our coin too. I best cut to my points which are - The support for keeping the Cronulla facility in this website has been pathetic. There is international outcry over this decision, and yet a whimper on this site. And yet we are supposed to be fisherman. Bah. There is more science than the average (or more than average or less than average) fisho can imagine going on at that facility and up and down the coast. Including the humble salmon. I am not yet pro or anti commercial bag limit, i have not read the science. Respect the science, or, at least read it. Do not respect the politics. I am struggling to get thru the science behind the catch limits imposed, and haven't seen a salmon off my rocks for 3 months (when usually they'd chew the yakka well before the targets came in). But, that is seasons, water etc. It is fishin, not catchin. I reckon because i eat these beautiful fish, i feel more strongly than the rest, but if you care, read the report here, and enjoy informed debate? here is a link to an overview of the species: http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0012/375879/Eastern-Australian-Salmon.pdf here is a link to the research document: http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/research/areas/systems-research/wild-fisheries/outputs/2011/1827 Read the report if you feel strongly enough and lets engage with the scientific community, because (as a punter fisho) their weak link is information on what is caught everyday: how big, what sex, what stage of roe/milt, and caught when and where. I also cannot say strongly enough REC FISHOS SUPPORT YOUR SCIENTISTS. have a great summer.
  6. Hello, Does anyone know the size of the bearing on the top of the pinion gear on Shimano's Sienna 2500FB and/or Alivio 2500FA please? I am also thinking of replacing the main gear bushes with bearings, as they are a bit sloppy, though it is not practical at the manufacturer's RRP, any tips as to supply/size would be well appreciated. Thanks.
  7. Sashimi... Believe it or not, Maori wrasse went well the other nite. The fish yielded two creamy white fillets, has only a few pin bones, and a firm texture. this time of year mite be best, as it seemed in good condition. Yep, it was a hard day fishing!
  8. gotta love the alvey reels! My tip is to be sure to take notice of the size of your swivels, all the alvey literature will show you what size to use to suit your line. the smaller, the better i have found. been using alveys for a few years, and with the right size swivels, had no twist issues at all. good luck mate.
  9. Thanks for the constructive answers, seems a urethane mite be the go. I agree that this application is probably the extreme glue challenge Zook! Now, Mrs S, i would be happy to take my medicine if you are able to demonstrate how searching either "glue" or "shoe" could have come up with an answer to my query, or the link that zook provided to a glue that i had otherwise no idea existed. thanks again.
  10. Yakkas... to help a bit on the bait jigs, can i suggest you make them a bit more user friendly as 6 hooks with multiple fish kicking around can get a bit nasty. First, cut them in half. you have three hooks on each. i have used the other half "upside down" with no less fish hooked (maybe more). tie an extra swivel on the top of the bottom half, and put a sinker on the bottom of the top half. To make this easy, a good way to attach small weights is to crimp them onto the end of the line. its easy to use split shot, or with small sinkers, double the line back thru and crimp hard. i also tend to squash the eye of the swivel that comes at the bottom of the baitjig pack, thread it into a sinker and crimp a sinker to this. easy. then, think about tying this jig under a float if you are landbased or lose one or two to the bottom, and if the yakka are not playing, burley up and sweeten the hooks with bit of fish, chicken, and i have found that fish liver from a just caught fish goes ok too. good luck mate.
  11. Dear Chewy, thanks for the info on buying new shoes...think i was asking about glue. Anyone else feel welcome to contribute on glue for fixing my otherwise reliable and comfortable shoes?
  12. hi mate. Try strips of bonito you (or a mate) caught during the season, normal bream rig (simple sinker/swiv/#1 or 2 hook). of course fresh bonnie is best but salted/frozen goes alright too. each side of top of tide where i fish. good luck mate, and don't over cook them, my opinion is they are best still just that bit sticky to the frame i.e. 'pink' at the bone.
  13. Hello, I have now a few pairs of runners i use at my spots, which are not slippery, and the soles are pulling/have pulled off. I have tried Tarzan grip, tho this will not last more than two or three outings. instead of wasting time, $ and maybe stuff up the shoes with the wrong glues, has anybody discovered a glue that will bond the soles back onto your shoes and last a while? advice would be much appreciated. B81.
  14. that first fish looks like it mite be a juvenile gold spotted sweetlips. Is that from pittwater too? I've caught a few on central coast at the end of winter to 45cm.
  15. G'day, I have now pulled two nice Gold Spotted Sweetlips in the same area not far north of Sydney. I have only ever seen these in tropical, or at least warm waters in the north, and the book gives their range as being more northerly too. There are very fatty. The "membrane" bewteen their swim bladder and gut cavity is about 4mm thick fat. As a result of being fat, they have made the best sashimi i have tasted ever. And i have eaten pretty much everything i can raw (at least once). Anyone else seen these fish this far south? Anyone got a theory on what they are doing down here? Cheers!
