dougfish61
I am going to be in Sydney for 3 weeks starting on Monday and would like some suggestions about where to fish and what to fish for. I’ll be staying in the central business district area but I may have access to an auto on weekends. I plan on bringing only a little tackle and purchasing a rod and reel in Sydney. I am most familiar with fishing for striped bass and bluefish in New England (US) from rocks, jetties and tidal creeks and rivers. I have an assortment of hard and soft lures and various hooks, swivels and weights. Are there any places in the CBD where I could fish after work or if I explore further on weekends. I may rent a kayak for a day in the Harbor. Any suggestions or help would be most appreciated. Thanks.
Flightmanager
to Fishraiders dougfish! As you will be staying in the CBD , you have a wonderful Harbour right at your doorstep , with any number of places to try your luck. You might try down at Pier One ( under the Harbour Bridge , on the Western side) . Also , smalll boats can be hired from Rose Bay ( only a short distance from the CBD) . Make sure you have a Fishing Licence , you can get one online here : NSW FISHING LICENCE , or you can download the list of places that sell these licences : FISHING LICENCE AGENTS Good luck , I look forward to reading your reports ! Hi there Doug ,we had a similar situation once before with a guy call Rus from Western Australia and he made a lot of good friends whilst over here and made fishraider his home . I am pretty sure some of the members will help you out whilst here Cheers Swordfisherman

dougfish61
To all, Thanks for the tips. I need to buy a rod and reel for while I'm here without spending too much. Any clues as to what size gear I should get? I went to one shop that recommended a 7' light rod in the 2-5 kg range. Does that seem about right? Thanks Lindle

harold
seems fine for the areas you will easily be able to walk to. If you walk to the southern end of that great big bridge that looks like a coat hanger you will see lots of people fishing there in the mornings. dougfish61
I am going to be getting a kayak near the spit bridge for fishing tomorrow. Any good spots to try around there? I was thinking to start in the morning at low tide but could be convinced to hit it at high tide in the afternoon. Are there bait shops near there or could I rely on lures? Again thanks for all your help. I'll let you know how I did. Lindle

BigDfishing
hEY!! dougfish61, If your going to the Spit tomorrow try under and around the bridge. There is some nice deep water there. i have caught some rat kingfish there and some nice taylor before. also flathead on live bait (Dusky's) are common. The Fish raider boys can advise you with whats on the bite or look up some of the reports for the harbour at the moment. My advice is if you are use to catching striped bass, then forget your Bream in the harbour and go west, 1hr inland will get you on to some Native Australian Bass water where you can work all those lures and plastics you have in your bag of tricks.
