Methodman
Does any of you guys have a clunk when putting it in forward and reverse? Is it the gear box or is does it sound like the engine control needs adjusting? This is on a 5.8 Savage Lancer cuddy cabin. I did see a brand new trailcraft at a boat ramp with the same probs. Its done it on a newish 90 merc 2 stroke and now a new 115 merc 4 stroke. So ive always had the prob. ?????? Methodman
mick309
I get a similar sound on my 70hp Evinrude, I think it is due to the lack of a clutch, There is nothing to help mesh the spinning gears so they clunk, (try putting your car in gear with no clutch). Guest Big-Banana
You'll find every motor does that. Don't fiddle with it, just push it smoothly into gear and there won't be much of a clunk at all.
Guest Jewel
Outboards have a dog clutch, they should clunk into gear! Dont try to ease them in with no clunk as this will cause damage to the dog gears.
Flightmanager
Jewel is correct , the dog clutch arrangement is an all or nothing deal , trying to gently ease the motor into gear causes damage to the gear teeth. A positive push into gear is the way to go . Ross
fishingrod
this is unqualified but someone told me that the number of teeth on the Mercs is different to other brands and they "generally" clunk a bit more? (i owns a Merc so im not being bias here)
Guest Jewel
A dog clutch has NO gears, it is a ramped castelated part in male and female http://www.sterndrive.info/sterndriveparts/id9.html The bottom 2 pieces on the left best illustrate the principle. Methodman
Thanks guys, I do remember the last guy who serviced it said the throw it into gear with a firm push.
gone_wishin
I've got the same motor, 115 4st Merc the clunk only happens if I move it into gear too slowly. Don't be shy, if you want forward "do it" positvley and smoothly (same for reverse).
