Kings And Nobles

Hey Rzee, there is nothing worse than seeing another guy catch all the fish when you are getting nothing!!! Luckily the guy catching all the fish was me :biggrin2::074:

I use the scotty 1050 depthmaster downrigger. It does the job really well for me and with the gimbal mount I don't have to drill any holes. I had a few raiders fish on my boat ( the old one) and all of them comment on how effective this set up is. Makes the whole thing portable. I also use a 7lb bomb for most of my work. Danny ( barrykrocker ) knows what a difference it makes to winding it up compared to a 10lber. I do have 2 10 lb bombs but they rarely get used.

SPotting kings on the sounder takes a bit of practice. If you just see the demo or rely on typical advertising then you'll miss a lot of information. In my old sounder, the kings were harder to see amongst the bait but the new furuno really shows it up clearly. THe difference between the bait and the kings is very clear. The kings DONT mix with the bait. If you were a bait fish, you would not want a kingie sitting next to you!!! Normally they are found alongside, above or below the bait schools. THey also show up as larger signals...obviously.

Yesterday I found the bigger kings sitting just UNDER the bait schools. Where the smaller kings were found alongside or above the bait. I got a few small fish to confirm what I saw on the screen.

It was just a simple matter of adjusting the depth of the downrigger to present the bait to the larger kings...BINGO!!! I don't know if you saw me adjust the downrigger on my boat but I was doing that all the time to get the depth right.

I guess you also saw my father with me yesterday. He is not a fisherman but I was pointing out the kings on the sounder and nominating that we would get a bite pretty soon. Almost within 10 seconds of saying this, the rod would fold over everytime. My father got good at picking up the kings when I showed him what to look for. We did a few trolls without any bait int he water to just get to learn the ways of the new sounder. I am very impressed!

I'll see you Tony with your new downrigger soon! Cheers Kelvin

P.S the kings weren't sitting a couple of meters off the bottom. In fact they were mostly in mid water about 4-6 meters.THe bigger ones were most 8 meters . I was surprised that you didn't get a king as even with a sinker, your bait should have reached them and the kings especially the rats willingly come up to the surface to hit baits especially squid. I guess it wasn't your day.

ALso it is very difficult to tell what type of bait species it is on the sounder. But where we were fishing, there is NO structure with a clean sandy bottom. Leather jackets and sweep are not in this type of water. They like a bit more structure around. Most probably the bait were either small yellowtail or those herring type fish. The kings were full of them.

By the way I was very tempted to use my jigs when I ran out of bait. WOuld have probably worked a treat...just drift over the bait balls and get the jigs working through them.

you and your similies Kelvin, what was it last time? "Like a bucket of antlers"?!!

congrats on a great boat and the kings to go with it! Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh sometime

Hey Danny, I LOVE playing with words and adding a few colourful discriptions makes reading anything more enjoyable. I think in one of my post even Netic had a few laughs. Have a look at his photos to see that it is hard to crack a smile on this man.

Your squidding has improved out of sight !! I guess the next time I see you, you'll be the one showing me a few things. Plus you have been getting a few kings yourself. Pretty easy once you know what to do. CHeers Kelvin

looking forward to seing you on the water again..

Tony

Tony, I don't know what this rain will do to the kingfish bite in the harbour. Especially the squid as freshwater can put them off. I am going out tomorrow morning to have a bash. Never know may get a flattie or two. CHeers kelvin

You should have a look at my unit ...when I have it better sorted! But I have not seen the type of detail as I have seen on the Furuno. The guys who have the 585 or the smaller 620 are spoilt. The 620 and the 585 have the same processor/transducer and only differ in the size of the screen.

The 620 is about half the cost of the 585. Pretty good value. These are dedicated sounders from a manufacturer who specialises in saltwater for the commercial fleets around the world. Actually made in the country I was born! I have never heard of a Furuno breaking down. ONly now are they getting serious about the recfisher market.

By the way the FCV585 won the US best sounder/fish finder of the year award again!!!

Give me a buzz if you want to go out one day. CHeers Kelvin

I agree with your view on the 585 after having mine now for 4 weeks it has outstanding picture quality/definition, I have used mine mostly outside around the Peak, 12 mile etc. I am running the same transducer setup as you, the feature list is great there is a lot to play the bottom lock is great. I comtemplating the 1kw transom mount in the not to distant future

They look like white bait or anchovies. ALso there are heaps of minute bait fish around. THe kings and other pelagics are just slurping this small bait like vacuum cleaners. Cheers Kelvin

I saw those little baitfish at Clifton on the weekend,

they would leap across of the water at a million miles an

hour whenever I would wind my 9" shad back toward the boat.

They thought it was a predator after them.

I went out today to try out my new boat . It was built to fish so come rain , wind or hail I was going out.

I went out with my 2 boys and my father. My father is prone to seasickness but he wanted to ride in the new Noble.

Got to the ramp at 6 am. The Noble is a big mutha ( for a trailer boat ) but handles easily and soon we were out squidding. My 4 year old son got the first squid. He has learnt to cast in recent weeks and was so proud to have caught the squid all by himself. Within half an hour we had enough bait for a session.

The Noble was fitted out for downrigging so that was what I tried first. Earlier in the morning I passed Rzee. I promised him that I'll keep him informed if I got onto some kings.

The action was pretty hot from the word go. WE got hit after hit from a school of kings hanging around a bait ball. My new sounder the furuno fcv585 is absolutely amazing :1yikes: . Its ability to discriminate targets is almost like looking through the water yourself!!! I could clearly see the kings hanging adjacent to the bait school. In fact I could predict when the downrigger would go off as I passed a patch of kings. It freaked my father no end. I really can't wait to get this sounder wired....all this was from auto!

I thought that my garmin was good but compared to the furuno, it was like walking in the dark.

I got onto some better fish 70-85cm models simply by changing depths to match the bigger fish signals on my sounder!!!!

By now Tony joined us but he had no downrigger...he is off to get one today!!

I quickly ran out of squid so I decided to go and catch a few more. By now the harbour was getting busy but we got some more bait.

3 squid-3 kings. I kept 5 for the table and for some mates and released the rest.

The Noble did everything it was designed to do. The chop and swell in the harbour was handled with utter ease.

A good way to start the fishing career of my new boat. ALready smells like KINGS! Now bring on the flatties.ANother good day on the kings Cheers Kelvin

well done kelvin, you are truely becoming sydneys king for catching kingies.

The boat looks great, it must have cost you a small fortune. I must be in the wrong kind of work.

If you would like a good deck hand look no further than myself.

Hail there noble one... you are the master of Sydney harbour.

tight lines.

Yeah Penguin, those little bait fish are everywhere and swarming in huge schools. The slimies and yakkas are also getting stuck into them. In the last few weeks I got fooled many times into casting sluggos into schools of slimy mackeral thinking they were schools of kings!!! I constantly see little yakkas tucking into these little baitfish around the spit everytime I go out.

The salmon seem to be fixated on these fellas and are really hard to tempt on anything bigger. Unlike a couple of months ago when the salmon were far easier to get on lures.

i guess if you were a pelagic fish then it is like living in a supermarket at the moment! Cheers Kelvin

Thanks for the encouragement Kelvin, Squidding certainly improves after a couple of trips with someone who knows what they are doing

You'll have to tell me how you did today (wednesday) because I went out on tues just after all the rain and there no were squid ANYWHERE. It was our worst session for squid for a long time and I wondered if it was to do with the rain. We only received two cautious touches and finally only got an octupus, which we decided to try despite no recollection of anyone assessing them as a kingfish bait. Anyway we got absolutely smoked on 80lb one of the tentacles. I don't have much basis for comparison but it was a serious fish

(We also caught a bunch of kings around 60cm, on sluggos and the occi tentacles - all released bar one)
