Blue Marlin

just a quick question, from the last 2 days with speaking to a few mates.

we hooked onto a 200 kilo plus blue marlin on the weekend .

it went down real deep.

from speaking to a fellow raider seeing a recent dvd stating that if they go way down deep that they have a heart attack and die.

now the question is would it be easier to bring in a 200 plis blue to the surface dead or alived,

some say that the blue being dead would be like trying to bring in a 1000 kilo fish.

now some think that it would be easier to bring it in especially since if was dead.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ?

i dont think iv caught a fish over 20kg but,,Draging a 200kg fish up from the depths would be a BIG task even if it was alive, being dead it would be like trying to drag 200kg of bricks up, i think it would be just about impossible depending what gear you were using.

cheers james

we had 50 w with 24kg line and also 30 w with 24 kg but unfortunately it wacked the tiagra 30w.

it nearly spooled us twice, the end result was it took about 400m of line.

we had him 20 to 30 metres to the boat then took off and swam deep.

Dead fish is a lot harder...

marlin have that airsac thing that runs across there lateral line that fills up with air.

if they die deep theres no air/positive buyoancy in the fish so it sinks like a stone...

alot of fish are lost if they die....

I fought a 264 kg blue for a long and gruelling 10 hours last year went deep and only left us with 100 meters of line left on 37kg, so there was no driving off her after 7 hours and another 100 meters back on the reel.We all thought she was dead getting no where so we drove off her and losing everything i had worked for we finally got some angle and started to plane her up, and after all the talk of a stail mate with a dead fish she come up swiming and very much alive! So you just never know.

If the fish dies on you deep it is not good and if it’s a big fish it’s exceptionally hard to get it up and in all probability you will loose the fish. It’s a dead weight and compounded by negative buoyancy with the huge column of water sitting on top of it.

It has always been one of our fears is when a fish is deep and dies on us. If you’re fishing 37kg or 60kg tackle on a 200kg fish you may have a chance. If you have 15kg to 25kg you have net to no chance.

To try and plane a big dead fish up is not possible. When you plane a fish you are reliant on changing the angle and altering its swim pattern. The key to it is the fish is swimming. If your fight gets to an up and down battle then to change angle and plane the fish is a sensible approach to break a stale mate. This is one of the key techniques used on the big tiger sharks and we have taken fish well over 400kg and one to 500 kg on 15kg tackle using this method.

Hope your next hook up results it success.

Cheers

Went out trolling with a mate a few years back in his 21ft haines off botany put out the spread of lures on the shelf went about 1km when a long dark shadow appeared behind the 14inch shotgun way out the back,

the penn 50w burst into a awesome 700m screamin run with the fish then going straight down into the depths and stayed there, never jumped once didnt see it again until 3 backbreaking hours later when i finally grabbed hold of the leader a huge blue marlin came up to the surface dead ,a gaff wasnt even needed as the big fish never had a kick left in it.It went 213kg on 24kg line but cause the fish was straight down it was too hard, too long and pretty sad to see it come up dead.So definately its better to have big marlin stay alive and closer to the surface the better, the faster u can get them in the better chance u have of a capture and it gives the fish the best chance of survival when tagged and released.

spoke to fishfinder tony tonight and he stated that its nearly impossible to have landed esp on a 30w tiagra with 24kg line.

he also that the line may have twisted around the fish with the current when it was dead making it even harder.
