frankp Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 (edited) this is a report on my behalf of my brother who went to browns on saturday with wayne a mate of his for a bottom bash. he had no winch so he was using a tiagra 50w and was hoping that this would do the job as he had never attempted this sort of fishing before. he got to the grounds at around 7 and dropped his first line down with no success, he did add that it took a good 10 minutes for the line to drop to the bottom with 3 snapper sinkers that were quite large and another 10 minutes to bring the line up. on his second drop he picked up his first ever blue eye cod that would have weigned close to 12-15kg and n his third drop he picked up another similar blue eye cod . i have a question for everyone but when he hooked up the blue eye cod he would always lose the sinkers and i mean i know that was a good thing in regards to fighting the fish but it was not intentional for this to happen and i just want to know why this happened. anyway he dropped a few more times for a a couple of nannygai and what looks like ocean perch, i could be wrong. he said that the waters were fantastic and that it was one of his best trips ever keeping in mind he has caught marlin and YFT. i might add they have so far been this best tasting fish i have ever had Edited May 14, 2007 by frankp
tiger_shark Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 Great eating fish those blue eyes.. I'm think that those lead eating lobsters were around...they tend to be around by the dozen this time of year. They way a tonne too, but not good for eating. lol, j/k. I dont know if leatheries are around a browns...but thats what ussually gets all my sinkers.
TheDiko Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 All these Blue Eye reports are making me hungry for some Browns Bashing Great work Frankp's brother IFS

domza Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 my brother is married to his trophy, that how much he loves it. this trip was about its fifth trip to browns and it handles beautifully. saw it on newbridge road chiping norton. Fantastic looking boat. looks like alot of line is missing from that tiagra, what kind of bait was he using?
mako1 Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 Great work to your brother frankp. That's a great catch. Those nannygai and ocean perch are top eating too. Well done In regards to the sinker coming off in most cases it's gemfish that slash at the line as they have very sharp teeth. We had a problem with them cutting the braid at the top of the trace so I had to extend the mono trace to overcome this. Could also be the sharp spikes on the nannygai and ocean perch rubbing on the trace as it was brought up.What size trace was he using? We use 300lb and find this works really well.
Flattieman Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 In regards to the sinker coming off in most cases it's gemfish that slash at the line as they have very sharp teeth. that! Some top fish there - sounds like an awesome day's fishing! Flattieman.

frankp Posted May 14, 2007 Author Posted May 14, 2007 (edited) saw it on newbridge road chiping norton. Fantastic looking boat. looks like alot of line is missing from that tiagra, what kind of bait was he using? spot on about location. yeah they were worried there wasnt going to be enough line but i think they something like 100m left. they had stripped tuna and pilchards but the fish were only eating the squid. to mako im not sure but it was somewhere between 150lb to 200lb. thanks for the advice.
