Jigging For Kings

"We are seriously thinking about going to 15 and 20kg of drag. The only problem is how do you stay on your feet? CHeers Kelvin"

interesting to say...

just to give an idea to whoever doesnt do much jigging, when you hook up a 1m+ fish (of which i got 3 last week :1prop: ) you have to hang on to the rod, considering you have been jigging for 3-4 hours (we jig all day, every drop, non stop) your muscles will fail you...

When you hook up, you will seriously think the rod is going to take off, with heavy drags, we are fishing 20kg all the way to the jig, you can easily get pulled into the water by these brutes if you're not alert..

you have many things on your mind, first is to stop the fish, then putting the rod in the gimble, the thoughts of doubting your knots with every headshake.

Then your feet start shaking, your arms acke more and more, you get the fish to mid water and you release the drag and off it goes... music to the ears!!

to me it is the most exciting way to catch kings, i got 9 in 2 sessions last week, smallest fish is in mid eighties.

that fish in the pic is my pb so far and i got done by a much bigger fish just before i landed it.

Kelvin motivates me when we go alone, and in the last 3 months, 1-2 trips a week (at least 15 jigging trips)

i have become much fitter and i enjoy it more and more..

i can feel the 20kg mark getting closer... stay posted

Tony

Hi.

We use a Braid buster sit in harness.. Takes a lot of the load off.I use Saltiga 30/40. with a Shimano 400 T.Curve. and coupla Jap Jig Sticks.

I'm 65 in a week. My exercise is Outrigger canoeing..I go out with the 40 to 50 yr olds..(Senior Masters) We go out 4 times a week. 1 hr or so of a weekday evening.. Sat Morning. normally do a 17 or 21km lap.at 65 strokes a minute. You are flat out. for that time. Full power, Other 4 or 5 in boat soon let you know if you're not...1 hr 20 min ish. Depending on seas...

We doing Hammo (Hamilton island) Regatta this W'End. I'm in at least one sprint.500mtrs. FLAT out.

1 round the Island 16km. and the 44km Marathon.. over a coupla days

It's great exercise for jigging, and all deep water fishing..You use near every muscle in your body, But Importantly.. Your body gets used to constant full on pumping with stomach, Back, legs, and shoulders.. Jigging is a LOT easier after that sport.. Plus the fun of doing it.. You mob of young kids should try it. It's fun. and hard work.

And that's my advertising done for the day.

Have fun. And think about it..It's better than Gym work. It's more constant. Full power and really builds up your power..Stamina..

That was the day Tony got seasick! We headed out to our jigging grounds and within 10 minutes Tony had a nice burley trail going. Being a kind, considerate, benign person that I am, I pulled the plug on jigging and headed straight back in. That cured the seasickness.

We caught some squid real quick and downrigged at our backup spot which is MH. I kind of know a few spots around there :1prop: .

Got some kings to 90cm in MH that day but missed jigging. SO much more satisfying to catch the kings on jigs. We are being spoilt as unless a king is over a meter, we don't even mention them anymore.

After all these years I think I have figured out the inshore kings as much as a person can figure out a fish. It seems whenever we fish inshore these days we are just culling the numbers of kingies but jigging is all about mental and physical toughness and gives you a genuine chance at a trophy fish.

I think that is why most of my mates who specialise in kingfish like Rzee,445f,Netic etc are getting stuck into this form of fishing. I can tell other raiders that it is a highly addictive form of fishing so only take it on if you dare! Cheers Kelvin

Sounds like you are catching up on the fish Tony !! 9 in 2 sessions is good, 3 over a metre is tops !!!! I don't think I want to go out with you and Kelvin anymore, it has been a while between jigs and I don't want to be dragging the chain !!!!

I think I'll take baby steps, 15kg will do me for starters :biggrin2:

Geez, you know how to make us younger blokes feel ordinary !!! Sounds like you are a fitness machine !!! Jigging would only be a stretching exercise for you !!!

445F what are we going to do with your position at the front of the boat? We have been saving this gun position for you. Missed you in the last couple of weeks. I am going straight out when I get over this blasted flu!!! I am dragging you out with me so that the MH kings can grow in peace! CHeers Kelvin

Ha ha, I reckon that is why you guys have me at the front of the boat. Hoodlum territory is obviously at the back of the boat !!!

Bring it on Kelvin, I gotta get me a Hood.

PS - You must be on life support, not out fishing on your day off !!!

THis flu is really bad but I'm starting to feel better. I even had the flu vaccine!! YOu know I am in a bad shape to stay at home and miss my fishing. Not quite on life support yet but close to it. I'll be right for the weekend. Might wonder down to have a look at that centre console this arvo. CHeers Kelvin

It was a great day out fishing with you oz!

Pulling up kings from the depths is certainly a different method than downrigging. Over the last couple of years our jigging tackle has been whittled and refined. We must have had close to $10K worth of gear on our boats.

BY the way I have been plagued by that whale for the last couple of trips. He always turns up and the fish go off the bite! Whenever we move, he follows us!!!! I guess we don't have to pay for that whale watching trip.

We are just waiting for that 20kg+ fish to hit our jigs again...can't wait. How's your back oz? YOu are welcome anytime mate. CHeers Kelvin

G'day

I think i may have seen you guys head back towards pittwater or the heads, roughly 2-3pm two boats passing avoca offshore on sunday arvo, i had my suspicions that the blue one was the noble. Did u guys see the police cruiser?

we were trying to work some of the closer reefs and had no luck.

any chance of a pointer on offshore king rigging kelvin? its my 2nd time and again failed!

There were plenty whales out there, we saw about 6 in 6 hours, in 4 different occassions. No fish but ppl would pay heaps to see that many whales.

Cheers Jin
