searunner Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 I was just wondering if anyone has or knows of someone who has used a downrigger for use at Browns Mountain.I was looking at possibly using my Scotty 1085 30 Downrigger as a substitute for a 1425 Reef Queen. As i looked into the costs i,d be looking at forking out at least $900.And as you all know you can only hide so much from the misses, especially now with online banking giving them total access to banking details.Anyway just a thought. Also if anyone does know of a case, would they know of line capacity of the above mentioned downrigger, say using 37kg braid??
warnie Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Stu I would imagine the line capcity would fall short .....Most fishing there use the deck winches and a few use a rod and game reel loaded with braid But rod and reel is hard yacka (unless electric of course).......The depth from top of mtn is 1,230 odd feet down to 1,600 and deeper off the platue......... The thing is......... we generally double that quantity so in the event you snag up and safegaurds in place dont work and you loose a full drop of line you still have enough to drop again and continue fishing..... sorry about depth in feet........ habit for me there....... also am not familiar with the actual 1085 .30 (is it plastic?) but know the pressure from the line on the spool particularly when under load can be tremendous i have seen it warp the spool on a game reel hope that info is helpfull............... Cheers Warnie

Cheers Warnie Here,s a picture of Scotty down rigger1085 it has a 30" boom and has about 60m of 150lb wire.I,m just not sure about line capacity. As you say i,d need about 1000m of braid.Just wondering what you or someone out there thinks?Would it work?
warnie Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Stu okay.!!!!!!!!!.........no i think that is not advisable and give it a miss....... besides the line capacity doubts and along with the potential..... with what you can hook up to fishing there the stress on the boom..... and handle....most likely would result in obliteration to one or both...........would recommend getting your brownie points up and talking to the missus......and go for a deck winch or equivalent............ ps.... incidently some of my mates are having good results using a stella outfit with 80lb braid and lighter weights but that is not a cheap option either......... if i can work out how to arrange to send pics i could send you some photos of fish caught from the mountain that would sway your way of thinking......... Cheers Warnie.
warnie Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Good advice there C.F.D that certainaly would be a cheaper option bashing browns can have its rewards.........but cheeze....who needs the gym it can be a good work out at best.......... Cheers Warnie

KingsRule Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Never bottom bashed like that before but by the sounds of the extreme weights and pressures involved i think its probly worth buying a reef queen or similar, if the downrigger gets wrecked, its only gonna cost you more to fix..
warnie Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 (edited) Stu here is a recent pic from last thursday of me holding a gemmie big by no means at around 7kg.....quite a few bigger also that day but when say 3 or 4 jump on..... all at once it adds to a lot of strain even more so for the cod that are generally targeted ............ the biggest cod that day went ...24 some thing kg so as not to be........ like popeye one handed..... it pays to have a comfy set up...... Cheers Warnie........ Edited August 6, 2007 by johnno
